Start with the settings that solve your biggest everyday annoyance: silence interruptions, make the screen easier to read, tighten app access, or change how your iPhone handles battery and sound. Menu names and eligibility vary by iOS version and model. If a path below doesn’t match your phone, open Settings, tap the search field, and search for the setting’s name.
Which iPhone settings should you change first?
There is no one best iPhone setup. If alerts interrupt you, begin with notifications and Focus. If the screen is difficult to read or use, try the text and display controls. Privacy permissions are worth reviewing app by app; battery settings make sense when their tradeoffs suit your routine.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide puts the aim simply: “You can customize your notification settings so you see only what’s important to you.” The settings below let you make that choice across alerts, access, appearance, sound, and power.

1. Choose which apps can notify you
Go to Settings > Notifications, select an app, and adjust its alerts. Turn off notifications for apps that do not need to interrupt you, while checking that essential apps—such as those you rely on for time-sensitive messages—remain enabled. The tradeoff is straightforward: fewer alerts mean less distraction, but you may miss updates from apps you silence.

2. Batch less urgent alerts with Scheduled Summary
In Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, turn on the summary and select the apps and delivery times you want. This is useful for notifications you want to review but do not need immediately. Keep urgent or time-sensitive apps outside the summary if you need their alerts as they arrive.
3. Change the Lock Screen notification layout
Under Settings > Notifications, choose how notifications appear on the Lock Screen: List, Stack, or Count. List shows alerts in a list, Stack groups them, and Count emphasizes the number of notifications. Pick the layout that makes it easiest for you to scan—or least likely to expose details at a glance.
4. Set up a Focus for a recurring context
Open Settings > Focus, choose a Focus such as Work or Sleep, or create one, then specify which people and apps can notify you. Focus reduces interruptions by filtering alerts according to the context you set. Be deliberate about exceptions: allowing too many people or apps can undermine the quiet you wanted, while allowing too few can hide an alert you need.
5. Schedule Focus to turn on automatically
In Settings > Focus, select a Focus and add a schedule or automation. Depending on the Focus and iOS version, it can activate at a chosen time, at a location, or when you use an app. If it turns on at an unwelcome moment, review or remove that schedule rather than assuming the phone is malfunctioning.
6. Link a Focus to a Lock Screen or Home Screen
When configuring a Focus, link it to a Lock Screen or Home Screen where the option is available. A work Focus can show a work-oriented page; another Focus can use a simpler screen. This changes the screen context along with notifications, so consider whether hiding or moving apps will make the phone harder to use during that Focus.

How can I adjust privacy and access?
7. Review app permissions
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security and review permissions for categories such as photos, microphone, camera, and contacts. Revoke access an app no longer needs. An app may lose a feature that depends on that permission, so if something stops working, check its access before reinstalling it.
8. Review Location Services app by app
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then select an app to review its location access. Choose the access level that fits how you use it. Denying location permission can limit features that rely on your location, such as location-based directions or local results.

Find Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and adjust whether apps may request permission to track you. This is a control over tracking requests; it is not a promise that all forms of tracking or data collection stop. Review other app permissions and privacy settings separately.
10. Require attention for Face ID
In Settings > Face ID & Passcode, review Require Attention for Face ID. When enabled, Face ID requires you to look at the screen, adding a security check. If you rely on Face ID when you cannot look directly at the display, that requirement may make unlocking less convenient.
11. Choose what remains available while locked
Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, depending on your model, and review the options under Allow Access When Locked. Consider whether features and information shown from the Lock Screen—including notification content—fit your privacy needs. Reducing access can protect information from someone holding your locked phone, but may require unlocking for actions you currently perform from the Lock Screen.

How do I make my iPhone screen easier to use?
12. Increase text size
For a general text-size adjustment, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size. For larger sizes, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text and enable larger accessibility sizes. Larger text is easier to read for many people, but it can change how much content fits on screen.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match13. Turn on Bold Text
Look in Settings > Display & Brightness > Bold Text, or use Settings search for “Bold Text.” Heavier lettering can make interface text easier to distinguish. The appearance changes across the interface, so try it and keep it only if it improves readability for you.
14. Adjust Display Zoom
Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Display Zoom and choose the available view that makes interface elements more comfortable to see. Display Zoom enlarges interface elements, not just text. Because larger elements leave less room for content, you may see fewer items at once.
15. Show borders around controls
In Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, turn on Show Borders if available. It adds definition around certain controls, which may make them easier to identify. The visual treatment is more pronounced; check whether it improves clarity on the screens you use.
16. Set appearance and brightness to your preference
Use Settings > Display & Brightness to adjust brightness and appearance, and to review options such as Night Shift and Auto-Lock. These are preference controls: choose the screen look and brightness that work in your environment. Do not treat an appearance or color setting as a guaranteed health or sleep benefit.

17. Choose an Auto-Lock interval
Under Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, select how long the iPhone waits before locking automatically. A longer interval can help when you are reading or following directions without touching the screen. Apple cautions that delaying Auto-Lock can increase power consumption, and a phone left unlocked for longer may expose its screen to someone nearby.

18. Set tones and vibrations by alert type or contact
In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, choose sounds and vibration patterns for supported alert types, such as calls, messages, and calendar alerts. You can also assign a distinctive ringtone or text tone to a contact in that contact’s edit screen. Custom tones can help you recognize an alert without looking, though a louder or more distinctive tone may be more noticeable to people around you.
19. Separate alert volume from ringtone volume
In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, review Change with Buttons and Match Ringtone Volume if shown on your iOS version. Turning off Match Ringtone Volume lets alarm or alert loudness be controlled separately from ringtone volume where supported. Check the result with the alerts you depend on; lowering a control you thought affected only calls could make another sound harder to hear.
20. Review Attention Aware Features
Find Attention Aware Features in Settings > Face ID & Passcode on supported models. These features can keep the display from dimming while you look at it, expand some Lock Screen notifications when you are looking, and lower the volume of certain alerts when you are attending to the phone. If those behaviors are inconvenient, review the setting; changing it may also remove the behaviors you find helpful.

21. Use Low Power Mode when conserving charge matters
Go to Settings > Battery and turn on Low Power Mode when you need to reduce power use. It can change background activity and display behavior, so some tasks or visual effects may work differently while it is enabled. Use it when preserving charge matters more than having every background feature run as usual.

22. Consider Adaptive Power only if your model supports it
Check Settings > Battery for Adaptive Power. On eligible models, it can adjust iPhone behavior automatically based on usage. Availability depends on the iPhone model and software version, so its absence does not necessarily indicate a problem. If present, review its description on your phone before enabling it.
23. Set a Charge Limit if supported and useful
Apple documents Charge Limit for iPhone 15 and later. Go to Settings > Battery > Charging and choose a limit if the option is available. Apple gives 80% as an example of a maximum that can help reduce battery wear in situations involving frequent or prolonged charging. A lower limit also means the phone may not be fully charged when you unplug it, so choose one that fits your daily range needs.
24. Review charging optimization for your model
In Settings > Battery > Charging on iPhone 15 and later, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier, review the charging optimization options available to you. These features are intended to help reduce battery wear from charging patterns; they do not guarantee a particular battery lifespan. Keep the optimization that fits your routine, or adjust it if its charging behavior does not suit your needs.
What if a setting or menu path is missing?
Apple’s guides include features that are not available on every iPhone, and menu labels can change between iOS versions. Use Settings search to find a control by name, such as “volume,” “Auto-Lock,” or “Charge Limit.” If search does not show it, check your iPhone model and iOS version: the feature may not be supported on that device.
