23 Free and Open-Source Go Static Site Generators to Consider

A practical guide to 23 Go static site generators, grouped by site type and workflow, with a closer look at Hugo, Plenti, Gitmal and gostatic.

For a general-purpose site, Hugo is the strongest starting point in this roundup: its official documentation describes broad support for blogs, documentation, multilingual sites, asset pipelines and several deployment workflows. Other entries target narrower needs, including Git repository pages, Svelte-based authoring, incremental rebuilds and minimal blogging. The list below identifies what each project is described as doing; it is a shortlist, not a verified ranking of current maintenance or performance.

What a Go static site generator does

A static site generator turns source content and templates into HTML files before you publish them. That model can suit blogs, documentation and other sites whose pages can be prepared ahead of a visitor’s request. The LinuxLinks roundup also cites local previewing, version-control friendliness and easier export as potential benefits, but these are not guaranteed equally by every generator or hosting setup. LinuxLinks’ roundup was published September 25, 2026.

“Written in Go” describes the generator’s implementation, not necessarily the author’s entire toolchain. For example, Plenti pairs a Go command-line backend with Svelte-based templates. Before settling on a tool, match its content and template workflow to your skills, then check its current documentation and repository.

How the best-known options differ

Generator Best-fit clue Workflow or capability described Evidence qualification
Hugo Broad-purpose websites, including blogs and documentation Multilingual support, taxonomies, content and asset pipelines, an embedded development server, and deployment editions Capabilities are described in Hugo’s official materials; check the edition and current documentation for a specific feature.
Plenti Sites using a Svelte-oriented frontend workflow Go command-line backend with Svelte-based templates LinuxLinks’ profile describes the combination; verify current project status and workflow in its own documentation.
Gitmal Browsable pages for Git repositories Repository files and commits, code highlighting and Markdown rendering Use-case and features are described in LinuxLinks’ profile; this is not a same-site comparison test.
gostatic Sites where dependency-aware rebuilding matters Tracks dependencies and renders changed pages; profile also describes Markdown, a watcher/HTTP server, pagination and script integration LinuxLinks’ profile is dated November 8, 2023; confirm present status and compatibility.

Why Hugo stands out in the available documentation

Hugo’s official project description calls it “a static site generator written in Go, optimized for speed and designed for flexibility.” Its official materials describe support for documentation, blogs, landing pages and corporate sites, along with multilingual content, taxonomies, content and asset pipelines, and an embedded development server. These documented capabilities make it the broadest-documented option in this roundup; they do not establish that it will be the fastest or easiest choice for every site.

Hugo’s repository distinguishes standard, deploy, extended and extended/deploy editions. The deploy editions document direct deployment to Google Cloud Storage, AWS S3 and Azure Storage. The extended edition supports LibSass, which the repository notes is deprecated in favor of Dart Sass. Check the edition details before relying on a feature or deployment path.

Hugo’s official homepage says the project is free and open source under Apache 2.0. The homepage reported 90,026 GitHub stars as of October 4, 2026, attributed to Hugo Authors. Stars are a dated popularity signal, not evidence of suitability, support quality or performance.

Choose by site shape and workflow

  • For a general-purpose site: Start by evaluating Hugo if you need documented features such as multilingual content, taxonomies or asset processing. If a smaller feature set is preferable, compare the minimal and simple tools in the list against your actual publishing needs.
  • For a blog or Markdown workflow: Compare the blog-oriented projects and Markdown-focused options by how they handle your preferred content format and templates. The roundup’s short descriptions do not establish which has the best authoring experience.
  • For repository documentation or browsing: Gitmal and depp are explicitly positioned around Git repositories. Check whether their generated pages suit the files, history and presentation you want readers to browse.
  • For a Svelte frontend: Plenti is the specific Go-and-Svelte combination in this list. Make sure you are comfortable maintaining the frontend workflow as well as using its Go command-line tool.
  • For incremental builds: gostatic and gohan are described as supporting changed-page or incremental build behavior. Verify how that works with your content and templates; the roundup supplies no comparable build-time test.
  • For production confidence: Check each project’s official repository for recent releases, issue handling, documentation and license. A directory entry or feature description alone does not verify current maintenance.

What this roundup does not establish

The 23 projects are not ranked by a standardized benchmark. The available descriptions do not provide same-site build-time tests, consistent feature trials or a current maintenance audit across all entries. Words such as “fast,” “lightweight” and “minimal” are project descriptions, not comparative measurements. The roundup and linked profiles also do not verify the present release cadence, support level or licensing details for every tool, so confirm those in the project’s own repository before adopting one.
