Bitcoin’s 21 million figure is the nominal maximum supply under the issuance rules followed by the Bitcoin network. New bitcoin are created as block subsidies, and that reward halves every 210,000 blocks. It is a protocol rule enforced by participating nodes—not a live count of coins, nor a limit set by a central issuer.
How Bitcoin’s 21 million limit works
When a miner adds a valid block, the protocol permits a block subsidy: newly issued BTC. The subsidy started at 50 BTC per block and halves after each 210,000-block interval, so issuance slows in steps rather than stopping at a predetermined calendar date. Bitcoin.org describes the resulting issuance as decreasing and predictable, and explains that nodes reject blocks that do not follow the rules they expect (Bitcoin.org FAQ).

After the April 2024 halving, the subsidy is 3.125 BTC per block, according to a 2026 Nasdaq Bitcoin Index Options filing hosted by the SEC. That filing gives the halving interval as 210,000 blocks, or approximately four years; the calendar interval is approximate because blocks are produced over time rather than on a fixed schedule (SEC-hosted Nasdaq filing).
What the figure does—and does not—count
“21 million” describes a nominal issuance ceiling, not how many bitcoins have already been created or how many can currently be spent. A 2026 issuer filing estimated that approximately 20 million bitcoin had been generated as of February 12, 2026. That is a dated estimate, not a live count (2026 SEC issuer filing).

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Nor does the nominal ceiling tell you how many coins remain accessible. Some coins may be lost or inaccessible, but the sources cited here do not establish a reliable count of those coins. It is useful to distinguish three ideas:
- Nominal ceiling: the familiar 21 million figure associated with Bitcoin’s issuance rules.
- Cumulative issuance: the amount generated through block subsidies by a particular date.
- Accessible or spendable coins: the portion owners can actually use; this is not established by the ceiling or the dated issuance estimate.
Why 21 million is not a simple code constant
Bitcoin Core’s MAX_MONEY constant is set to 21,000,000 BTC, but its source comment calls it a sanity-check value and explicitly says it is not the total money supply. It should not be treated by itself as a calculation of all bitcoin actually issued (Bitcoin Core source: amount.h).

The more important point is that the limit comes from the issuance and validation rules the network participants’ software follows. Bitcoin.org says nodes reject blocks that violate their expected rules. The ceiling is therefore a rule of the adopted Bitcoin protocol, rather than a physical law or a unilateral decision by one developer (Bitcoin.org FAQ).

Can Bitcoin’s supply cap change?
It could change if participants adopted different consensus rules. A 2026 Nasdaq filing hosted by the SEC states, “However, the 21 million supply cap could be changed in a hard fork.” A hard fork involves a change to consensus rules; participants choose which software rules to follow, and disagreement can leave separate chains. So the cap is not impossible to change, but changing it would require broad coordination among network participants—not simply a developer editing code or an individual miner choosing to issue extra coins (SEC-hosted Nasdaq filing; 2026 SEC issuer filing).

When will the last bitcoin be issued?
The 2026 issuer filing estimates that the 21 millionth bitcoin will be generated around 2140. That is an estimate, not a precise deadline: block times vary, and the issuance schedule is tied to block heights and repeated subsidy halvings rather than a fixed date (2026 SEC issuer filing).
The core meaning is straightforward: Bitcoin’s adopted protocol schedules declining new issuance toward a nominal 21 million ceiling. The ceiling does not mean all coins have already been mined, that all issued coins remain spendable, or that the rule could never be changed.
