The right command-line compressor depends first on your source format and whether changing pixels is acceptable. Use a lossless optimizer for exact fidelity, a lossy encoder when smaller files matter more, and a format converter when you are moving to WebP or AVIF. The tools below are free/open-source candidates documented by their projects or named in current optimizer toolchains; they are organized by use case rather than a laboratory ranking.
Choose by format and fidelity
| Need | Best starting points | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless PNG reduction | OptiPNG, oxipng, zopflipng, pngcrush, advpng | Encoding and ancillary data may change; decoded pixels should remain the same. |
| Smaller, possibly lossy PNG | pngquant | Palette and pixel representation can change; transparency is supported. |
| JPEG re-encoding | MozJPEG/cjpeg, jpegoptim, ImageMagick | Quality, chroma, and encoding choices affect pixels and file size. |
| WebP output | cwebp | Converts to WebP; choose lossy, lossless, or near-lossless mode. |
| AVIF output | avifenc, cavif | Converts to AVIF; encoder settings determine quality, speed, and size. |
| GIF, SVG, or mixed batches | Gifsicle, SVGO, ImageMagick, ECT | Format-specific optimization; rendering and metadata need checking. |
“Quality 80” is not a universal setting. ImageMagick documents JPEG quality as a visual-quality/file-size trade-off, while PNG quality settings select compression behavior without changing PNG appearance. Encoder scales also differ between JPEG, WebP, and AVIF.
20 tools and what each is best for
1. pngquant — lossy PNG palette compression
pngquant reduces PNG size by converting images to an optimized palette. It offers quality and speed controls and preserves alpha transparency according to its project documentation. Its documentation shows one example shrinking from 75,628 bytes to 19,996 bytes (73%); that is a project example, not a guaranteed saving.
2. OptiPNG — conservative PNG optimization
OptiPNG tries PNG transformations and compression strategies intended to reduce size without losing semantic image information. Some files will not become smaller.

11. avifenc — AVIF encoder
avifenc is the AVIF encoding utility supplied by libavif. It is appropriate when your workflow intentionally converts source images to AVIF rather than merely recompressing within the original format.
12. cavif — AVIF conversion candidate
cavif is listed as a PNG/JPEG-to-AVIF converter. Verify current source support, command syntax, maintenance, and licensing before using it in production.
13. ImageMagick — multi-format processing

20. ImageMagick magick — scriptable conversion entry point
Current ImageMagick installations commonly provide the magick command. Use it when one script must handle several formats, but keep format-specific settings explicit and test metadata behavior.
Practical command patterns
These examples illustrate common workflows; option names and defaults can vary by installed release. Run each command on copies and inspect the output.
- Lossy PNG:
pngquant --quality=65-80 --output out.png --force input.png. Adjust the range after visually checking edges, gradients, and transparency. - Lossless PNG attempt:
optipng -o2 input.png. Try higher optimization levels only when added CPU time is acceptable. - JPEG with MozJPEG:
cjpeg -quality 80 -progressive -optimize input.ppm > output.jpg. Quality 80 here is specific to this JPEG encoder. - WebP:
cwebp -q 80 input.jpg -o output.webp. For exact pixel preservation, use the encoder’s lossless mode instead of assuming a numeric quality value is lossless. - AVIF:
avifenc input.png output.avif, then consultavifenc --helpfor the quality and speed controls supplied by your build. - ImageMagick:
magick input.jpg -quality 80 output.jpg. For PNG, quality controls compression behavior rather than visual appearance.
Metadata, color, and safety checks
- Keep untouched originals until the batch is approved.
- Compare pixel dimensions, transparency, animation, orientation, and visible detail.
- Inspect EXIF, ICC profiles, comments, and other metadata; tools may strip, preserve, or transform them depending on format and configuration.
- Open representative outputs in the applications and browsers your users rely on.
- Measure output size on your own images. A saving reported by one project is not a cross-tool benchmark or a promise for your files.
How to select a production tool
- Inventory formats and decide whether conversion to WebP or AVIF is acceptable.
- Set a fidelity rule: strict lossless, near-lossless, or visibly lossy.
- Prototype on a small, varied corpus, including photos, screenshots, transparency, gradients, and dark images.
- Record output bytes, decode appearance, processing time, memory use, and metadata results.
- Verify each project’s current license, maintenance activity, supported operating systems, and package/binary name before deployment.
No controlled, dated comparison establishes one universally fastest or smallest tool among these candidates. “Best” therefore means best fit for your format, fidelity target, and workflow.
