Microsoft confirmed that its official @Microsoft account on X was accessed without authorization on October 1, 2026. The account promoted a Clippy-themed cryptocurrency, but the available reports do not establish that a pump-and-dump was completed or measure any resulting trades, losses, or price impact. Microsoft said it secured the account, removed unauthorized posts, and was investigating.
What happened to Microsoft’s X account?
The Verge reported that the official @Microsoft account followed a Clippy-themed crypto account, reposted one of its posts, and changed its profile image to a Clippy image. The posts were removed. An unusual apology post appeared later and was deleted roughly 30 minutes afterward, according to the report.

Microsoft spokesperson Brent Colburn confirmed unauthorized access: “We have confirmed unauthorized access to our account on X including posts that did not come from Microsoft,” he said. “The account has been secured and the unauthorized posts have been removed, and we are continuing to investigate the circumstances.” (The Verge, October 1, 2026)

No. BleepingComputer reported that the posts appeared to promote a $Clippy token. Microsoft said it had not authorized, sponsored, endorsed, or permitted any cryptocurrency token associated with Clippy, Microsoft, or $MSFT. It also said it intended to pursue appropriate legal action to have the unauthorized token and related materials removed. Microsoft’s statement, reproduced by BleepingComputer on October 2, 2026, explicitly disavowed affiliation with the token, its creators, and related projects.
The promotion’s appearance on Microsoft’s account is not evidence that Microsoft created or backed a token. Do not treat a post from a compromised account as company approval.

Was it a proven pump-and-dump?
The reports establish that unauthorized posts promoted a token; they do not establish the mechanics or outcome of a pump-and-dump. They give no verified trading volume, attributable price movement, victim count, or loss total for this incident. They also do not identify who accessed the account, how access was obtained, or how the token was issued. Microsoft said the circumstances remained under investigation.
Accordingly, “pump-and-dump” describes the apparent promotional scheme in the headline, not a confirmed finding about trading or financial impact. Claims of specific profits, losses, or market movements would go beyond what the cited reporting establishes.

How this differs from Microsoft’s 2024 India account compromise
This October 2026 incident is separate from the June 3, 2024 compromise of Microsoft India’s @MicrosoftIndia account. BleepingComputer reported that attackers then impersonated Roaring Kitty and used replies and a purported GameStop token presale site to lure users. The reported risk involved connecting a crypto wallet and authorizing transactions on a site that could drain assets.
| Incident | Account and date | Reported promotion or exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Current incident | @Microsoft, October 1, 2026 | Clippy-themed crypto promotion appeared on the account. The reports do not establish a wallet-connection lure or verified losses. |
| Earlier incident | @MicrosoftIndia, June 3, 2024 | Roaring Kitty impersonation and a purported presale site; users who connected wallets and authorized transactions faced a reported asset-draining risk. |
The incidents involved different accounts, dates, impersonation themes, and reported user risks. Neither the 2024 event nor Microsoft’s separate January 2024 disclosure about a corporate email intrusion establishes how the 2026 X compromise occurred. Microsoft’s January 19, 2024 Midnight Blizzard disclosure described password spraying against a legacy non-production test-tenant account and subsequent access to a small percentage of corporate email accounts; it did not connect that activity to the later X incident.

What X users can do to protect accounts
X’s guidance recommends two-factor authentication with an authentication app or a hardware security key. Its Help Center also warns that phishing messages can imitate legitimate services and provides guidance for compromised accounts. These are general security recommendations, not evidence about Microsoft’s account settings or the cause of this incident.
- Use X’s compromised-account guidance if an account may have been accessed by someone else.
- Review X’s two-factor authentication options, including authentication apps and hardware security keys.
- Be wary of urgent crypto promotions and requests to connect a wallet or approve a transaction, even when they appear in a familiar account’s feed.
The access method in Microsoft’s case has not been disclosed, so the reports do not show whether any particular security measure would have prevented it.
