To move your WhatsApp chat history from Android to an iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS transfer during the iPhone’s initial setup. The iPhone must be new or erased, and you must use the same phone number. If you cannot erase an iPhone that is already set up, linking a device may provide account access—but it does not import your Android chat archive.
Which method fits your situation?

WhatsApp’s official Android-to-iPhone migration instructions document one full-history route: Move to iOS. Its migration guidance also warns that third-party migration apps are not supported and may cause problems.

Way 1: Move WhatsApp chats with Move to iOS
Check the requirements first
- The Android phone must run Android 5 or later, and the iPhone must run iOS 15.5 or later.
- Install the latest WhatsApp version available for each platform and the Move to iOS app on Android.
- Use the same phone number on both phones.
- The iPhone must be new or factory-reset, and WhatsApp must not already be activated on it.
- Keep both phones connected to power and on the same Wi-Fi network. If needed, Android can connect to the iPhone’s hotspot.
These requirements come from WhatsApp’s Android-to-iPhone transfer instructions. A reset erases the iPhone, so save anything important from it before you begin.

Transfer the chats
- Prepare the iPhone. If it contains data you need, back it up before erasing. Start iPhone setup; if setup is already complete, erase the iPhone and begin setup again. Apple’s Move to iOS instructions explain that users who have finished setup must erase the device to use this transfer flow.
- Choose the Android transfer option. During iPhone setup, select the option to move data from Android. Open Move to iOS on the Android phone, follow its prompts, and enter the code displayed on the iPhone.
- Select WhatsApp. On Android’s transfer selection screen, choose WhatsApp and start the preparation step in WhatsApp. Wait for the export to finish.
- Keep the transfer running. Leave Move to iOS open on Android and keep both phones nearby and powered until the iPhone’s transfer completes. Switching apps or answering a call before completion can interrupt it.
- Import into WhatsApp on iPhone. Install the latest WhatsApp from the App Store, register with the same phone number, and follow the import prompt.
- Check the result before clearing Android. Confirm that the chats and media you need are on the iPhone before deleting WhatsApp or its data from Android. If you want cloud recovery, create an iCloud backup from the iPhone after migration.
What transfers—and what does not
WhatsApp says the transfer can include account information, profile photo, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, media, and settings. It excludes WhatsApp call history, display name, media received through WhatsApp Channels, and messages tied to peer-to-peer payments. The transfer does not itself put the data in iCloud; you need to create an iCloud backup afterward if you want one.

Is a cable required?
No. Apple supports wireless transfer. A direct USB-C connection between compatible phones can make the broader Move to iOS transfer faster, but it is optional. Check both phones’ ports before buying a cable; Apple’s transfer instructions describe the connection options.
If the transfer fails
- Confirm that the iPhone is reset and still in setup, both phones meet the minimum operating-system requirements, and Move to iOS and WhatsApp are up to date.
- Check that both phones are powered, connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and have enough available iPhone storage.
- Leave Move to iOS open on Android. If the connection stalls, Apple recommends disabling Android settings that interfere with Wi-Fi, turning off cellular data if needed, and restarting both phones.
- Make sure you use the same phone number for WhatsApp on both devices.
- Keep the Android phone and its WhatsApp data intact until you have verified the iPhone import.
If WhatsApp is already activated on the iPhone, the Android history cannot simply be restored over the newer iPhone history. WhatsApp says the histories cannot be merged. To use the documented migration route, back up anything important from the iPhone, erase it, and run Move to iOS during setup.

Way 2: Link a device for account access—not chat migration
WhatsApp’s linked-device feature can let an additional device access an account by scanning a QR code from the primary phone. See WhatsApp’s linked-device instructions for the QR linking flow. This is not a way to import the full Android chat archive into an iPhone.

Whether a linked-device setup is available depends on the account and device combination. WhatsApp’s companion-phone instructions surfaced for this topic are specifically for WhatsApp Business, so they do not establish that the same setup works identically for every personal account. If your goal is to have the old archive on iPhone, linking does not replace Move to iOS or remove its reset requirement.
