2 Obsidian Alternatives You Can Self-Host: SilverBullet and TriliumNext

SilverBullet is the stronger fit for self-hosting ordinary Markdown notes; TriliumNext offers a structured knowledge base with desktop/server sync and Markdown import/export.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want notes available across your own devices without stitching together cloud sync, plugins, and local-sync tools, start with SilverBullet. It is the clearer Obsidian alternative when keeping notes as ordinary Markdown files matters. TriliumNext Notes is another self-hosted option, especially if you prefer a structured knowledge base and desktop-to-server syncing, but its documented Markdown support is import and export—not proof that its native storage is a folder of plain Markdown files.

Both projects document Docker-based deployment. Self-hosting still means operating a server, and SilverBullet in particular has practical TLS and filesystem requirements to account for.

1. SilverBullet: best when Markdown files and browser access come first

SilverBullet is a self-hosted, browser-first knowledge-management app built around Markdown notes. You point its server at a folder, then access the space from a modern browser. The project also describes installing it as a progressive web app, working offline, and syncing when back online. Its product page sums up its setup as “One container. Point it at a folder and you’re running.” That is the project’s description, not a guarantee that every server setup is administration-free. SilverBullet project page

Ways to use it

  • Browser-centered: run the server and access your notes from desktop or mobile browsers.
  • Offline-capable: install the web app as a PWA; the project says it can work offline and sync later.
  • Desktop plus server: SilverBullet lists a desktop app with local folders and desktop-to-server synchronization, alongside features such as live-preview Markdown editing, tasks, and templates. Project page; Feature list

What “straightforward self-hosting” still requires

The installation guide supports Intel-compatible 64-bit and ARM 64-bit server hardware and describes a few hundred megabytes of RAM as sufficient; that is a qualitative resource statement, not a benchmark. The guide recommends putting a TLS layer in front of the server for encrypted connections and the full feature set. Plain HTTP on a local network has limitations. It also recommends a case-sensitive filesystem where possible: sync depends on reliable file modification timestamps, and filesystems or external processes that change those timestamps can cause problems. SilverBullet installation guide

In practice, this makes SilverBullet appealing if you want a simple folder-based model and are comfortable setting up a suitable server and secure access. The “one container” pitch should not be read as “no configuration or maintenance.”

2. TriliumNext Notes: a structured knowledge base with server sync

TriliumNext is a reasonable alternative if you want a broader personal knowledge-base application and a desktop/server workflow. Its documentation covers local desktop use and synchronization with a self-hosted server. The getting-started instructions include Docker deployment with a data directory mounted into the container, and describe running the server on your own server or VPS. Server installation; Getting started

The repository lists Markdown import and export and a rich editor with Markdown autoformat. Those capabilities can help move or exchange content, but they do not establish that TriliumNext stores its notes as ordinary Markdown files in a folder. If that kind of transparent file portability is essential, SilverBullet is the better-supported choice. TriliumNext repository

How to decide before moving your vault

  • Choose SilverBullet if you want a browser-accessible self-hosted app and your priority is keeping notes as Markdown files in a folder.
  • Evaluate TriliumNext if a structured knowledge base and desktop/server sync appeal more than Markdown-native storage.
  • Check your hosting comfort: both document Docker paths, but you still need a machine or server to run and maintain the service. SilverBullet also calls for attention to TLS and filesystem behavior.
  • Test migration on a duplicate: verify the parts of your vault you depend on rather than assuming links, plugins, metadata, or attachments will transfer intact.

Obsidian itself lists first-party Sync, third-party cloud services, local sync tools such as Syncthing, and version control such as Git as ways to synchronize a vault, while noting that some platforms have limitations. These two alternatives are worth considering when you would rather use a self-hosted notes app than assemble a separate sync workflow. Obsidian Sync and vault synchronization
