For latency-sensitive gaming, a mouse’s dedicated 2.4 GHz USB receiver is the safest default. Bluetooth is useful when easy pairing and fewer dedicated receivers matter more than maximizing responsiveness. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is an emerging option, but current evidence here does not establish a verified, readily available consumer mouse with official specifications. No controlled three-way test supports a universal latency ranking.
What matters most when comparing mouse connections?
The connection label alone cannot tell you how quickly a mouse responds. Check the exact mouse’s receiver, polling rate, measured latency, host compatibility, and battery performance at the settings you plan to use.

- Connection path: A dedicated receiver connects the mouse through its own USB dongle; Bluetooth pairs through a host’s Bluetooth hardware. A UWB mouse may use a dedicated receiver too, so verify the implementation rather than assuming the radio name tells you the whole setup.
- Polling rate: Logitech defines this as how often the mouse reports its position and button presses. A rate of 1,000 Hz means 1,000 reports per second; 8,000 Hz means 8,000 reports per second. A higher rate can shorten the interval between reports, but it is not a complete measurement of end-to-end click or movement latency. Logitech’s polling-rate explainer describes the distinction.
- Testing conditions: A latency result is meaningful only alongside its test method and the mouse, receiver, firmware, host, and settings tested. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled comparison of all three connection types.
- Battery and interference: Compare battery estimates at your chosen polling rate, and check manufacturer guidance for receiver placement and radio coexistence. Do not assume results for one mouse apply to all others using the same connection label.
Dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver: the gaming default
For a player prioritizing responsiveness, a dedicated USB receiver is the most defensible starting point. RTINGS recommends a dedicated receiver for gaming in its general wireless-mouse guidance, describing Bluetooth as higher-latency and less reliable. That is broad buying advice, not a guarantee about every model or a numeric latency comparison. RTINGS’ wireless gaming mouse guidance is the source for that recommendation.

“2.4 GHz” does not specify one fixed polling rate or performance level. CHERRY lists its XTRFY M64 Wireless at 1,000 Hz and its M64 Pro Wireless at 8,000 Hz; both are 2.4 GHz models. The Pro includes an 8K dongle, according to CHERRY’s product page. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent proof of a particular end-to-end response time.

Higher polling can also draw more power. CHERRY rates the M64 Pro Wireless for up to 90 hours, with runtime dependent on polling rate and gaming style. Treat that figure as a qualified manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for every configuration; CHERRY discusses the qualification in its M64 Pro and M68 Pro technical backgrounder. Logitech likewise notes that higher polling rates can use more power on wireless mice.
Bluetooth: when convenience is worth the trade-off
Bluetooth can suit someone who wants to avoid a dedicated USB receiver or pair across devices. Its actual gaming performance depends on the mouse, firmware, host Bluetooth implementation, and test setup. The cited sources do not establish a universal Bluetooth polling-rate ceiling or a fixed millisecond penalty, so claims that every Bluetooth mouse is limited to 125 Hz or is a set number of milliseconds slower are not supported here.

- RAZER HYPERSPEED WIRELESS AND BLUETOOTH — Unleash seamless, low-latency performance that's faster than other wireless tech or switch to Bluetooth for longer hours of gaming. Outfitted with multi-device support for a streamlined setup
- UP TO 285 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — With up to 535 hours on Bluetooth and 285 hours on Razer HyperSpeed Wireless, last longer in the heat of battle with a mouse designed to play the long game. May vary depending on usage conditions
- RAZER 5G ADVANCED 18K OPTICAL SENSOR — Tailor the mouse to the playstyle with a new, robust set of sensitivity settings. Enjoy responsive, pixel-precise aim with an ultra-reliable sensor that tracks movement with zero spinouts
- RAZER MECHANICAL MOUSE SWITCHES GEN-2 — With new gold-plated contact points, the switches are less prone to degrading and have a longer lifespan of up to 60-million clicks, so gamers can enjoy crisp execution that’s just as consistent
Before choosing Bluetooth for gaming, check the specific model’s polling behavior and look for measured click and motion latency for that model. Also confirm pairing limits and device-switching behavior if using the mouse with more than one computer. If minimizing response delay is the priority and the mouse offers a dedicated receiver, use that mode unless reliable testing for your exact setup supports another choice.

UWB: an emerging option, not yet a verified buying category
Ultra-Wideband has appeared in gaming-mouse design work, but evidence of activity is not the same as a confirmed retail choice. Spark Micro’s 2024 SR1020-based reference-design brief describes a UWB mouse design and claims “20x the bandwidth of 2.4GHz.” That is a vendor claim about its design; it does not show that UWB mice are 20 times faster or more responsive. In September 2026, Tom’s Guide reported that a SteelSeries Rival Pro uses UWB in the 6 GHz band rather than the 2.4 GHz connection common in gaming mice. This is secondary reporting, not an official product specification page. The cited evidence does not verify the mouse’s retail availability or provide a controlled latency comparison. Tom’s Guide’s report is the source for the 6 GHz description.
If considering a UWB mouse, first confirm that the product is officially announced and available in your region. Then check its exact radio implementation and band, compatible receiver, polling rate, independently measured latency and interference performance, battery life, and price. Until those details are established for a specific purchasable model, UWB is better treated as an emerging technology than a proven alternative for a buyer choosing a mouse today.

How to choose for your setup
| Connection | Best fit | Verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver | Latency-sensitive gaming; the general default recommended in RTINGS’ buying guidance. | Whether the receiver is included, model-specific polling rates, latency test conditions, host compatibility, battery life at your chosen rate, and any manufacturer interference guidance. |
| Bluetooth | Convenient pairing or avoiding a dedicated USB receiver when maximum responsiveness is not the top priority. | Polling behavior, host Bluetooth implementation, measured latency for the exact mouse, pairing and device limits, and battery claims. |
| UWB | Following an emerging connection approach; a product’s real-world suitability depends on verified specifications and testing. | Official release and regional availability, radio band and implementation, receiver compatibility, independent latency and interference tests, polling rate, battery life, and price. |
Do not confuse an “8K” polling specification with an 8 kHz radio carrier or a measured 0.125 ms end-to-end response. It denotes a nominal 8,000 reports per second when supported and operating as specified. The radio connection, polling interval, and total response time are related but distinct.
