Choose 1Password if you want an integrated subscription with cross-device apps, autofill, alerts and straightforward family sharing. Choose KeePass if you want free, open-source software and are comfortable managing an encrypted database file, its synchronization and backups, and your own recovery plan. KeePass can sync: KeePass 2.x can merge changes between database copies, but you must set up where those copies live and how they are maintained. This is a feature-and-workflow comparison based on official product documentation, not a hands-on test.

#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
How do their security approaches differ?
1Password’s personal plan documentation describes end-to-end encryption for vault information and a unique Secret Key used alongside the account password. Its business documentation also describes AES-256 end-to-end encryption, Two-Key Derivation, SRP for data in transit, and support for independent third-party audits. These are vendor-described design and product claims, not an absolute guarantee of security.
KeePass’s documentation describes encryption of the database, data-integrity checking and choices including AES-256 or ChaCha20, HMAC-SHA-256, and AES-KDF or Argon2 key derivation. Its security guidance explains that increasing key-transformation work can make guessing attempts harder, while also making database opening and saving take longer. Pick settings your devices can handle; a setting that causes intolerable delays can undermine practical use.
Algorithm names alone do not establish which product is safer for a particular person. Account recovery, device security, updates, browser integration, user habits, sync and backup configuration, and—in KeePass workflows—the quality and maintenance of a chosen third-party client all affect real-world protection. The cited documentation does not establish comparative breach rates or independent head-to-head security results.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
- Use a strong, unique master password and keep the devices that access your vault updated and protected.
- Keep recovery credentials and any key file accessible to the rightful owner, but protect them from unauthorized access.
- Maintain protected backups and make sure you know how to recover your data before relying on the vault as your only copy.
Can KeePass sync between devices?
Yes. KeePass 2.x documents synchronization that can merge changes among database copies. It is not the same as automatic cloud sync that works everywhere without setup: you need a suitable location and access method for the copies. The documentation describes supported local or network storage and URL-accessible storage; certain protocols require plugins. It recommends a cloud provider’s local-filesystem integration where available.
With multiple people editing a shared database, conflicts are possible. In the documented example, conflicting edits to one entry are resolved using the latest modification time, while other changes are preserved in history. Users still need to coordinate how they open, update and back up the shared file.
By contrast, 1Password provides device access as part of its personal plan features. For families, the Families plan adds shared vaults and simple access controls for invited members. Check current plan terms before subscribing.

Which works better across computers and phones?
1Password lists apps for major desktop and mobile systems and browser extensions. That integrated approach can simplify using autofill across devices, though the exact features available can depend on the plan and platform.

If you want KeePass on a phone, tablet or a different desktop system, verify the exact client, its platform support and maintenance status rather than assuming every client has identical features or security properties.
When a portable KeePass setup makes sense
KeePass’s portable ZIP package can be carried on a USB flash drive and run without installation. A key file can also be carried on a USB stick. Both are optional; neither replaces encryption, backups or a recovery plan. Keeping a key file beside the database may weaken the benefit of separating those factors, so consider how you will protect and recover each one.

How should you move passwords between them?
There is no universal password-manager database format. KeePass documents multiple import paths, including generic CSV, but CSV or XML may carry only basic fields and omit manager-specific structure. Treat any export as sensitive: CSV exports are often plaintext.
- Make a protected export or a small test export from the old manager before changing your working vault.
- Import it into the destination manager, then check representative entries: URLs, usernames, notes, attachments, and any passkey or two-factor-authentication fields you rely on.
- Fix missing or mis-mapped data and verify that important entries work before retiring the original vault.
- Keep a protected backup until verification is complete, then securely remove any plaintext export you no longer need.
Which should you choose?
Choose 1Password if
- You prefer a managed subscription with apps and browser extensions across your devices.
- You want integrated autofill, sharing and account features rather than assembling a workflow yourself.
- You need a relatively straightforward way to share vaults with family members and accept a recurring cost.
Choose KeePass if
- You want free, open-source software and control over an encrypted database file.
- You are willing to choose and maintain the client that fits each device.
- You can take responsibility for file synchronization, protected backups, key management and recovery.
If you are unsure, decide first whether you want a service to manage much of the cross-device workflow or would rather control the files and take on the extra setup. That distinction is more useful than treating either product as a universal security winner.
