Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To change your router’s Wi-Fi name or password, connect a device to that router, open its correct local management address, sign in with the router administrator account, then find the wireless settings and save your changes. 192.168.1.1 is common, but it is not the address for every router. The exact login and menu labels vary by model.
What 192.168.1.1 does—and what it does not do
192.168.1.1 is a local address that some routers use for their administration page. It is not a public website, a router brand, or a model number. Other routers may use another address or a local hostname, and an owner or installer may have changed the default. NETGEAR, TP-Link, ASUS, and Linksys each document model- or product-specific ways to access settings; none establishes one address or interface for every router.
Use the address or hostname in the router’s label or official manual for your exact model. Type it into the browser’s address bar, not a search box. A local management page can usually be reached without working internet service, as long as your device is connected to the router’s local network.
Open the router’s wireless settings
- Connect to the router. Join its Wi-Fi network or connect a computer to it with Ethernet. TP-Link recommends Ethernet for configuration on the modem-router interfaces covered by its instructions. Make sure you are connected to the router you intend to change, rather than a guest network or a neighboring router.
- Open the management page. Enter the router’s current management IP address or local hostname in the browser address bar. If 192.168.1.1 does not load, check the router label or model-specific manual for the correct address instead of assuming this one applies.
- Sign in as the administrator. Use the router administrator credentials. These are separate from the Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password used to join the wireless network. Depending on the model and setup, the administrator password may have been created during installation or changed later; do not assume a universal username and password.
- Find the wireless controls. Look for a menu named Wi-Fi, Wireless, or similar. Menu names and paths differ. For the dual-band Linksys routers covered in its guide, the documented path is Configuration > Wi-Fi > Basic Wireless Settings; other models may not use that path.
- Edit only the setting you intend to change, then save. You may see separate settings for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Check which network or band you are editing before saving.
- Reconnect wireless devices if needed. Changing the network name or password can disconnect devices using the previous details. Join the network again with the new name or password.
Wi-Fi settings are separate from internet service settings
If your goal is only to change the wireless network name or password, you generally do not need to change WAN or Internet settings. Those settings govern the router’s connection to the ISP and use different information. Linksys describes DHCP as automatically obtaining IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS details from the ISP or modem. PPPoE and static-IP configurations require provider-specific information. Check with your ISP before changing the internet connection type; do not enter WAN settings as part of a routine Wi-Fi password change.

#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If the login page will not open
- Check the local connection. Confirm that the device is connected to the router’s own network. If you are using a VPN or another network connection that may route traffic elsewhere, disconnect it temporarily and try again.
- Verify the address. 192.168.1.1 is not guaranteed to be the correct address. Use the current IP address or hostname shown on the router or in its official manual for your model.
- Check power and retry. Confirm the router is powered on. NETGEAR’s troubleshooting guidance includes power cycling as a check; restarting is different from resetting, which erases personalized settings.
- Confirm which password the page requests. An administrator login is not the Wi-Fi password. If the administrator password was changed and is no longer known, consult the model’s official recovery guidance.
- Reserve factory reset for last resort. A reset may restore access, but it returns personalized administrator, Wi-Fi, and security settings to factory state. You will need to configure the router again. Follow the instructions for the exact model rather than resetting casually.
What you need—and when replacement matters
Routine wireless-setting changes use the router you already own and a device connected to it; no special purchase is established as necessary. Ethernet is a useful option for configuration when available. A replacement router is relevant only if the existing unit is faulty, cannot be recovered, or no longer suits the connection or coverage you need.
