1280 × 800 vs 1080p: Which Resolution Does Your Display Use?

1280 × 800 is WXGA, not 1080p. Here’s how it differs from 1920 × 1080 and why native resolution is separate from input compatibility.

No. A 1280 × 800 display is WXGA, not 1080p. The confusion comes from mixing up width and height: 1280 is the width, while “1080p” refers to an image with 1080 progressive vertical lines. In common Full HD use, that means 1920 × 1080.

What does 1280 × 800 mean?

The first number is the pixel width and the second is the pixel height: 1280 pixels across by 800 pixels high. Dell classifies this format as WXGA. Its aspect ratio is 16:10, a taller shape than the 16:9 format commonly used for Full HD. Dell’s resolution guide lists 1280 × 800 as WXGA and 1920 × 1080 as FHD.

How does 1280 × 800 compare with 1080p?

Format Pixel dimensions Aspect ratio Total pixels
WXGA 1280 × 800 16:10 1,024,000
Full HD (1080p) 1920 × 1080 16:9 2,073,600

The pixel counts and classifications are listed by Dell Support; its page was last modified on February 16, 2024. A 1920 × 1080 grid has just over twice as many pixels as a 1280 × 800 grid. Dell Support

Why is 1080p not the same as 1280 × 800?

The “p” means progressive scan, as opposed to interlaced formats marked “i.” The number 1080 identifies the image’s vertical line count; it does not name the width or total pixel count. For the common 16:9 Full HD format, the dimensions are 1920 × 1080. Samsung also describes 1920 × 1080 as “1080p or Full HD.” Samsung’s resolution explanation

Can a 1280 × 800 display accept a 1080p signal?

Possibly, but it depends on the particular monitor or projector. A device’s native resolution is its physical pixel grid; accepted input modes are a separate specification. If a 1280 × 800 device accepts a 1080p source, it must scale that image to its own pixel grid, and the input support and scaling behavior vary by model. Check the device’s documentation for supported signal modes rather than inferring compatibility from its native resolution. Windows uses display-reported native resolution when selecting a default mode. Microsoft’s Windows display guidance

How will the different aspect ratios affect video?

Because 16:10 and 16:9 have different shapes, video may be scaled, cropped, or shown with bars, depending on the device and its settings. Which result you see is model- and configuration-specific. Screen size and resolution are also separate measures, so pixel dimensions alone do not determine perceived sharpness. Samsung’s resolution explanation
