A comfortable home office starts with a work surface and chair that fit you; the rest depends on your room, equipment, and preferences. For a fall refresh, these 11 essentials and optional add-ons can make your setup more comfortable and inviting without treating seasonal decor as a productivity fix.

What do you need for a home office?

Start with the basics: a stable work surface and a chair that let you work in a comfortable position. Then adjust the screen, input devices, and lighting to suit your body and tasks. As Franciscan Health puts it, “Ergonomics means setting up your workspace to fit your body, rather than forcing your body to fit your workspace.” (Franciscan Health, June 17, 2026.)

Not every item below is essential for every person. A laptop riser is useful when the built-in screen sits too low; a footrest may help if your feet do not reach the floor after adjusting your chair. The goal is a setup that works for you, not a checklist to buy in full. The guidance here draws on the University of Pennsylvania EHRS workstation guidance, revised July 29, 2025, and Herman Miller’s workstation setup guide.

Foundational home office essentials

1. A supportive, adjustable chair

Choose a chair that supports a comfortable working posture and can be adjusted to suit your body and desk. Fit and back support matter more than a generic “best chair” label. If you work at a desk for extended periods, check that you can sit back comfortably and keep your arms in a workable position for typing.

2. A desk or work surface

Pick a stable surface with enough room for the equipment you actually use, while leaving frequently needed items within easy reach. A compact desk may suit a small room; a larger surface can help if you use multiple devices or need space for paperwork. Avoid choosing a surface so large that everyday items end up awkwardly far away.

Useful add-ons for your screen and input setup

3. Laptop stand or monitor riser

If your laptop screen sits too low, raise it with a stable riser or other secure surface. Aim to place the top of the display at or near eye level and keep the screen about an arm’s length away, adjusting for what is comfortable and readable. Raising a laptop also raises its keyboard, so pair the stand with separate input devices when needed.

4. External keyboard

An external keyboard lets you type with your hands at a comfortable height while the laptop screen is elevated. It is most useful when a stand makes the laptop’s built-in keyboard too high or otherwise awkward to use.

5. External mouse

A mouse provides a separate pointing device when your laptop is raised or when you prefer one to a trackpad. Place it close to the keyboard so you can use it without reaching far to the side.

TRALT Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Chair with Lumbar Support Black, 1
  • High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
  • Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
  • Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
  • Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching

Lighting and comfort accessories

6. Adjustable task lamp

A task lamp helps illuminate paperwork and other close-up work, particularly when daylight is limited. Direct the light toward the work area without casting glare onto your screen. If your lamp is adjustable or dimmable, use those controls to suit the task and the room.

7. Footrest, if your feet need support

Adjust your chair first. If raising it to work comfortably at the desk leaves your feet unsupported, a footrest can provide a stable place to rest them. A secure household substitute may work temporarily, but avoid anything that rocks, slides, or creates an uneven foothold.

Fall refreshes that help tame a workspace

8. Desk organizer

A small tray, pen cup, or drawer organizer can give frequently used supplies a consistent place. It is an optional convenience, not an ergonomic requirement; choose one that keeps items reachable without taking over the work surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Storage for paperwork and supplies

Use shelves, bins, or a filing solution that fits your room and the amount of material you need to keep nearby. For a small workspace, vertical storage can free up desk space. A September 2026 HOM Furniture article includes storage among its seasonal workspace-upgrade ideas; treat that as decor inspiration rather than health guidance.

10. A comfortable desk accessory

Personalize the space with a small item you enjoy, such as a plant, a framed photo, or a warm-toned desk mat. Keep it out of the way of your keyboard, mouse, and the space you need for paperwork. Cozy details can make the room feel more personal, but they do not guarantee better health or productivity.

11. A way to manage screen glare

Before buying another light or monitor accessory, check whether your screen faces a window or catches reflections from a lamp. Reposition the screen, adjust the light, or change the angle of the lamp to reduce glare. Natural light can be pleasant when it does not create reflections that make the display harder to see.

Set up the essentials in a practical order

  1. Place the desk. Choose a stable location with enough room for your equipment and convenient access to frequently used items.
  2. Adjust the chair. Set it for a comfortable working position. If your feet are unsupported at the height you need, add a footrest.
  3. Position the screen. Keep it about an arm’s length away and place the top at or near eye level, adjusting to your comfort and visibility.
  4. Arrange your input devices. Keep your keyboard and mouse close enough that you can use them without reaching. If you raise a laptop, use external devices when the built-in keyboard and trackpad no longer sit comfortably.
  5. Check the lighting. Aim task lighting at paper or the work area, and reposition lights or screens if reflections interfere with viewing.
  6. Add only the extras you need. Choose storage and personal touches based on your room, routine, and available desk space.

How to choose what to buy

  • For a low laptop screen: consider a stable stand, plus an external keyboard and mouse if raising the laptop makes its controls uncomfortable.
  • For unsupported feet: adjust the chair, then consider a footrest if your feet still do not rest comfortably.
  • For paper-heavy work or darker days: consider an adjustable task lamp and check that it does not create screen glare.
  • For a cluttered or small room: look for storage that frees work-surface space without putting daily supplies out of reach.
  • For a seasonal refresh: start with comfort and layout, then add a few personal details that fit the space.

Specific models, current prices, availability, and product-test results are not established here, so compare those details before purchasing. Prioritize adjustability and fit for chairs, screen and desk compatibility for risers, and light direction and glare control for lamps.
