A clean gaming laptop setup comes down to a short list of accessories that let the laptop work like a desktop without a tangle of loose cables. Most people need a core group: an external monitor, a way to raise the laptop, a dock or hub that connects everything through fewer cables, an external keyboard and mouse, and a simple cable-management kit. The other items on this list are useful in specific situations, so treat the 11 as a menu rather than a shopping requirement.
Intel’s gaming setup guide frames the goal this way: “The right peripherals can help turn a gaming laptop setup into a desktop equivalent when using it at home, but selecting the right space is a hugely important step in the process.” The sections below cover what each item does, what to check before buying, and where the trade-offs are.

Decide how the laptop will be used first
The right kit depends on how often the laptop leaves the desk. Three common patterns cover most readers:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Laptop-only at home. The laptop stays on the desk and you want a larger screen, better input, and fewer cables. A monitor, dock or hub, keyboard, and mouse usually cover this.
- Monitor-centred. The external display is the main screen and the laptop sits beside it or below it, often with the lid closed. The stand, dock, and cable tools matter most here.
- Frequently moved. The laptop goes between the desk and a bag. Favour a dock or hub you can disconnect in one motion, and keep the desk-only items (large mat, speakers, under-desk tray) optional.
Before buying anything, check the laptop’s exact port list, display output, and charging behaviour in its spec sheet or manufacturer support page. Those three facts decide which dock, hub, and monitor will work.

Screen and posture
1. External gaming monitor
An external display gives you more room for games, chat windows, and multitasking than a laptop panel. When comparing models, look at screen size, resolution, refresh rate, adaptive sync support, glare treatment, and available input ports. Match the resolution and refresh rate to what the laptop’s graphics hardware can drive and what its ports can carry. A 144Hz panel or faster suits fast-moving games, but it is an option rather than a universal minimum.
Intel recommends placing the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, so you are not craning your neck during long sessions. Intel’s setup guide covers display choice and positioning in more detail.
2. Laptop stand
A stand raises the laptop so its screen can sit alongside an external monitor, and it lifts the base off the desk. Check the stand’s footprint against your laptop’s chassis dimensions, and make sure the stand leaves the intake and exhaust vents unobstructed. Microsoft’s Surface setup guide says a stand can raise the base so internal fans work more effectively. That is vendor advice, not independent testing, and no universal stand size or cooling result is established across laptop models. Microsoft’s Surface guide makes that point in its setup advice.

- Whisper Quiet: The 9 fans of the laptop cooling stand are all added with capacitor components to reduce working noise. the gaming laptop cooler is almost quiet enough not to notice even on max setting.
3. Cooling pad (optional)
A cooling pad or external fan can make sense if you play for long sessions on a laptop that runs warm. Don’t expect a fixed temperature drop, lower fan noise, or higher frame rates. Intel notes that cooling is hard to compare from manufacturer descriptions alone and points readers to real-world reviews that test the model for the way they plan to use it. If your laptop already sits on a raised stand with clear vents, a pad may add little.
Connecting without buying the wrong gear
4. Docking station or USB hub
A dock gathers display, USB, Ethernet, audio, and storage connections behind one laptop plug, so the desk needs one cable instead of several. A basic USB hub is enough if you only need more USB ports. The two differ in what they can do with the laptop, so compare them on the points below.
| Option | Typical job | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| USB hub | Adds USB ports for keyboard, mouse, drives, or a headset | Number and type of USB ports; whether it needs its own power supply; whether it adds display output at all (varies by model) |
| Docking station | Combines display, USB, Ethernet, audio, and storage through one connection | Video outputs and maximum resolution and refresh rate; whether the laptop’s port supports the dock’s video mode; charging wattage the dock passes to the laptop; number of devices it can run at once |
Not every USB-C-shaped port works the same way. Some carry video, some carry data only, and some carry power only, so a port that fits a cable does not guarantee the function you need. Intel’s guide to picking a gaming laptop explains which port checks matter. HP’s cable organisation guide also covers how a single hub reduces the number of runs on the desk.

Input and audio
5. External keyboard
An external keyboard lets you choose a layout, switch type, key feel, and noise level that suits your desk and your games. Full-size boards keep a numeric keypad, while compact boards free desk space for the mouse. A wireless keyboard removes one visible cable, but it needs batteries or charging. A wired keyboard can be routed along the same path as other cables. Choose on comfort and noise first; connection type is a preference. Intel’s setup guide lists keyboards among the core desk peripherals.

6. Gaming mouse
Intel describes customisable buttons and optical sensors as reasons a gaming mouse can suit home play better than a laptop touchpad. Compare shape and hand fit first, then button count, whether you want a compact or full-size model, and wired versus wireless use. Test the shape with your grip, because the best sensor specification means little if the mouse is uncomfortable for your hand.
7. Mouse pad or desk mat
A dedicated surface gives the mouse consistent friction and makes the mouse area look intentional. Compare dimensions, surface texture, and backing against your desk. A large extended mat makes sense on a wide desk where the mouse needs room to move. On a small desk, a standard-size pad is the better choice.

8. Headset or desktop speakers
These are alternatives, not a pair. A headset is usually the better choice for voice chat and for keeping audio private, and many include physical controls for game and chat volume. Desktop speakers can make shared listening more comfortable, but they need desk space and may be unsuitable in a shared room. Compare them on the points below.
| Factor | Headset with microphone | Desktop speakers |
|---|---|---|
| Voice chat | Built-in microphone; quality varies by model | Usually needs a separate microphone |
| Desk space | Little; the headset hangs on a hook or stand | Speakers and their stands take up desk area |
| Cable count | One cable or a wireless link | Typically at least one audio cable per speaker or a power cable |
| Shared rooms | Private listening | Audible to others; may disturb them |
Hiding cables and protecting power
9. Cable clips, ties, sleeves, and an under-desk tray
Treat these as one small kit, not four separate purchases. Start by removing unused cables, since fewer runs makes every other step easier. Then use each tool for the job it suits:
- Clips anchor a single loose cable to the desk edge or a leg.
- Sleeves bundle a few visible runs into one tidy line.
- Ties secure a bundle where a sleeve would not fit.
- A tray or raceway hides larger bundles and the power strip under the desk.
Match the tool to the problem: an individual loose lead needs a clip, a visible bundle needs a sleeve, and a larger power-strip bundle under the desk needs a tray.

- Unplug and remove every cable you no longer use, then check what is left.
- Lay the remaining cables along one planned route before you fix anything.
- Run the main bundle behind the monitor, then horizontally under the desk.
- Drop the bundle down one desk leg and secure it with clips at intervals.
- Place the power strip in the under-desk tray so it stays off the floor and out of sight.
- Check that no cable is pulled tight at the laptop, monitor, or dock connection.
HP’s guide describes this kind of routing, including the choice between clips, sleeves, ties, and trays, in its desk cable guide.
10. Surge protector
Intel suggests a surge protector for a plugged-in setup and its connected devices, and notes it can be mounted under the desk to keep it off the floor. Treat it as a desk power accessory, not a guarantee against every electrical event. Check that its outlet count and cord length suit the monitor, laptop charger, dock, and any speakers, and leave room for the adapter bricks.
Upkeep
11. Microfiber cleaning cloth
A basic microfiber cloth keeps the screen and keyboard clean without adding anything to the desk. MSI’s laptop cleaning guide, last updated December 1, 2023, gives these steps: shut the laptop down before cleaning, wipe screen dust gently with an ultra-fine-fibre cloth, and do not press hard or scratch at stains. For vents, use canned air or an air blower held at a safe distance, and do not spray the can upside down. Follow your laptop maker’s model-specific instructions if they differ from MSI’s general advice. Do not spray any liquid directly onto the display. MSI’s cleaning guide has the full list for screen, keyboard, vents, and casing.
