Two other often-relevant models illustrate why resolution mode and HDR evidence need checking before you buy.
Why a credible top-five list is difficult
A monitor being described as “HDR” does not by itself establish that it meets a defined HDR performance level or produces convincing HDR images. VESA’s DisplayHDR program warns that claims without a DisplayHDR performance specification—and pseudo-labels such as “HDR-400” instead of “DisplayHDR 400”—may indicate that a product does not meet its certification requirements.

Even a genuine DisplayHDR tier is not a complete picture-quality verdict. Certification identifies a defined performance tier; it does not replace independent measurements of how the monitor handles bright highlights, dark areas, contrast, and dimming. RTINGS’ current 1080p roundup says many 1080p monitors have disappointing HDR picture quality, so a strong 1080p gaming pick is not automatically a strong HDR pick.

The LG is not independently tested or shown to outperform the other models in the evidence available here. The Lenovo’s listed brightness, refresh rate, size, and color-gamut figure do not establish HDR certification or HDR image quality. MSI’s 1080p mode is a setting on a 4K monitor, so it belongs in a different category from a native 1080p display.
How to assess a 1080p monitor’s HDR claim
Check for the exact certification name
Look for a named VESA DisplayHDR tier in the product specifications, not just a generic “HDR” label or a pseudo-specification. If the manufacturer does not state a certification tier, do not assume that HDR compatibility means DisplayHDR certification.

Look for measurements beyond the badge
Check independent test results for contrast, black levels, highlight brightness, and local-dimming behavior where applicable. Contrast affects whether a display can show a bright object against a genuinely dark scene; a badge alone does not tell you how that looks in practice.

Confirm the resolution mode
Verify whether 1920×1080 is the panel’s native resolution or an alternate mode on a higher-resolution display. For a dual-mode model, check the specifications for the resolution and refresh rate available in each mode rather than treating the highest refresh figure as an HDR-quality measure.
