10 Practical Terminal Habits for Less Repeated Typing

Ten practical terminal habits for finding commands, selecting files, organizing work, and keeping remote sessions available—with clear notes on setup and limitations.

Terminal productivity comes from reducing repeated commands and making common tasks easier to resume—not from a particular prompt theme or a promise of fixed time savings. Start with features already available in your shell or editor, then add optional tools such as fzf or tmux only when they solve a real problem.

1. Search command history before retyping

Most shells let you search earlier commands, often with reverse-history search (commonly Ctrl+R, though bindings vary). Type part of a command, inspect the match, and edit it before pressing Enter. This is especially useful for long commands with flags or paths.

If you use Visual Studio Code’s integrated terminal, its Run Recent Command picker searches commands from the current session, previous sessions, and common shell history. The documented default shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+R; accessibility-mode settings can reverse shortcut behavior. See Microsoft’s terminal shell integration documentation. Do not assume this editor shortcut applies in another terminal.

2. Use completion and suggestions, but check your bindings

Press Tab to complete a command, filename, or path when your shell supports it. Depending on the shell and configuration, a second Tab may show possible matches. This can reduce typing and help reveal exact filenames without guessing.

Some terminal applications add suggestions beyond shell completion. VS Code, for example, documents manually triggered suggestions as well as configurable automatic and trigger-character suggestions. Check the settings and key bindings for the terminal and shell you actually use; suggestions are not a universal shell feature.

3. Make only transparent aliases

An alias can give a short name to a command pattern you use repeatedly. In Bash or Zsh, for example, a simple alias can be written as alias ll='ls -la'. Add it to the appropriate shell startup file only after confirming which shell is running; other shells may use different syntax or configuration files.

Keep aliases easy to understand, and be especially cautious with ones that change defaults, hide prompts, or chain several commands. A study of more than 2.2 million alias definitions found on GitHub classified observed aliases as shortcuts, modifications, and scripts; that corpus figure does not show how much time aliases save for an individual user. See An Empirical Investigation of Command-Line Customization (2020).

4. Add fuzzy finding when ordinary lists are hard to scan

fzf is an optional, general-purpose fuzzy text filter: enter a few characters to narrow a list and select a match interactively. It is not built into every shell, so installation and shell integration depend on your system.

It can help when a list is long enough that scrolling or remembering an exact name is inconvenient. The project README demonstrates feeding file lists to fzf and using it with command history. Install it only if that interactive selection fits your workflow.

5. Choose files or history entries interactively

Once fzf is installed, a file-listing command can pipe results into it. The project README gives this example:

fd --type f --strip-cwd-prefix | fzf

Here, fd supplies the file list and fzf lets you search and select an entry. The command depends on having both tools available; fd is not guaranteed to be installed or named identically on every system.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The README also shows history | fzf as a way to search history entries. Whether selecting an entry then runs or inserts it depends on the shell integration or additional configuration you use. Treat the examples as starting points, not built-in shell behavior.

6. Use previews only for lists that contain previewable items

fzf can display a preview command beside its selection list; its documentation includes examples using cat and bat. A preview can be handy for file lists when you want to inspect a candidate before selecting it.

Avoid setting a global preview that assumes every item is a file. fzf can filter arbitrary text too, including process lists or history entries, where a file-reading preview may fail or show irrelevant output. Configure previews for the specific list where they make sense.

7. Put related terminal work in tmux windows or panes

tmux is a terminal multiplexer that organizes work into sessions, windows, and panes. Windows can keep separate programs or tasks together; panes divide a window when seeing multiple programs at once is useful. The tmux guide documents navigation among these arrangements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a layout based on the work: a separate window may be clearer than several narrow panes, while panes can help when you need to watch one task and interact with another. This is an organizational option, not a guaranteed speed improvement.

8. Keep remote work in a tmux session when disconnections are possible

When connected to a remote server, programs running inside a tmux session can remain available after you detach. The tmux project describes this as useful when an SSH connection drops: reconnect and reattach to continue working with the session.

This protects work from loss of the terminal connection, not from every failure. It cannot guarantee recovery if the host fails or a process is terminated. The project explains sessions and detaching in its Getting Started guide.

9. Revisit recent directories with the feature your environment provides

Returning to a recently used directory can be easier than reconstructing its path. VS Code documents a Go to Recent Directory feature for its integrated terminal. Its availability and behavior are application-specific; other shells and terminal applications may offer different directory-history features or none at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look up the feature in your own environment rather than assuming the same command or shortcut works everywhere. Microsoft’s shell integration documentation describes the VS Code option.

10. Change one part of your setup at a time

A useful way to adopt these habits is to make one small, reversible change: try history search, add one alias, or install one optional utility. Keep a copy of the configuration you change and know how to remove the addition if it causes unexpected behavior.

This gradual approach makes it easier to identify which feature helps your workflow and which adds friction. The right setup depends on your shell, operating system, terminal application, and the tasks you repeat.

Choosing between built-in features and add-on tools

Option Setup Best suited to Important caveat
Shell history and completion Often already available; bindings and configuration vary. Recovering commands and completing names or paths. Behavior depends on the shell and its settings.
Editor or terminal features Available only in applications that provide them. Recent-command or recent-directory pickers and suggestions. Shortcuts and availability are application-specific; accessibility settings may affect bindings.
fzf Requires installation and, for some workflows, shell integration. Interactively filtering text, files, or history lists. It filters text lists; previews and post-selection behavior need suitable configuration.
tmux Requires installation and learning its session, window, and pane workflow. Organizing terminal programs or keeping remote sessions available across a dropped connection. It does not protect against host failure or process termination.

For background on these utility categories, the Debian Project’s Debian Reference, Chapter 9: System tips also describes tools including ripgrep, fzf, and tmux. No source cited here establishes a fixed number of minutes saved by these tips; their value depends on the commands and environment you use.
