The Marvel games that still matter are not all trying to do the same thing. Some turn a team of heroes into an arcade brawler; others build their appeal around tactical choices, a personal story, or competitive online play. These ten are worth knowing because each offers a distinctive way to inhabit Marvel’s world—not because they form a definitive ranking.
How these Marvel games were selected
“Still define” means more than being popular now. The picks below span different eras and genres, and each has a recognizable design strength: a strong hero fantasy, an inventive way to use Marvel characters, a memorable approach to combat or storytelling, or lasting importance within its genre. The order is not a consensus ranking.

10 Marvel games that show the range of superhero gaming
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Insomniac’s action-adventure puts Peter Parker and Miles Morales at the center of a shared story, with threats including Kraven and Venom. Its value as a superhero game lies in letting players experience two distinct Spider-Men within one polished, character-led adventure. Marvel lists the game’s release date as October 20, 2023, with Insomniac Games as developer and PlayStation as publisher; it is available on PS5 and PC. Marvel’s official game page.
#1 Best Overall
- Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, return for an exciting new adventure in the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise. Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city, and the ones they love.
- An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
- Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. Experience Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety.
- Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!
It is a natural starting point for players who want a solo narrative rather than a roster-building or competitive game. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s September 15, 2026 announcement said Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games had sold over 50 million copies combined since 2018; that figure covers the series, not Spider-Man 2 alone. Sony’s announcement.
2. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Released in 2006, this isometric action RPG makes team assembly the central pleasure: choose four heroes from across Marvel and switch among them during play. GameSpot highlights characters such as Spider-Man, Wolverine, Daredevil, and Captain America as examples of the roster. The format gives the game a distinctive crossover fantasy: rather than following one hero, players build a squad and decide how its members work together. GameSpot’s Marvel games feature.
Its historical appeal should not be confused with guaranteed modern access. Current store availability and compatibility are not established here, so check the specific platform and edition before planning a replay.
Rank #2
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
3. Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Firaxis’ 2022 tactical game takes a very different route to superhero action. Battles combine strategic positioning and decisions with a deck-building card system; between missions, character interactions give the team a life beyond combat. That pairing makes it a fit for players who enjoy planning and relationships as much as direct action. GameSpot’s feature.
4. Marvel Rivals
For players who want team competition, Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, team-based PvP shooter built around characters from across Marvel. PlayStation describes seasonal content as part of the experience. Its defining appeal is the combination of recognizable heroes and an ongoing multiplayer format, rather than a fixed, single-player storyline. PlayStation’s Marvel games guide.
Because this is a live-service game, its roster and seasonal details can change. Check the game’s current official listing for what is available before choosing it for a particular character or play mode.
Rank #3
- 15 PLAYABLE SUPER HEROES: Whether you’re an old-school expert or a first-time fan, you’ll find familiar faces and discover new favourites in a captivating roster of characters from across the Marvel Universe!
- MASTER THE COSMIC SWAP TAG-TEAM SYSTEM: With the Cosmic Swap tag-team system, choose two Super Heroes for each level and switch between them instantly. - INTUITIVE, FUN MULTIPLAYER FOR EVERYONE: Whether you're teaming up with friends or family, MARVEL Cosmic Invasion has you covered with local/online play and a drop-in/drop-out adaptive system.
5. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
This is a single-player Star-Lord adventure, not a co-op game in which every player controls a Guardian. PlayStation emphasizes its original story, crew interactions aboard the Milano, and music-supported combat. The emphasis on the team’s banter and relationships gives it a character-focused identity distinct from a straightforward superhero brawler. PlayStation’s guide.
6. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
The remastered version of Insomniac’s 2018 PS4 game brings that Spider-Man adventure to PS5 and PC. PlayStation notes enhanced presentation and, on supported PS5 hardware, haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features. It remains a useful choice for players who want the earlier chapter before moving to Spider-Man 2. PlayStation’s guide.
7. X-Men: The Arcade Game
The arcade-style X-Men game represents the appeal of immediate, shared superhero action: pick a mutant, join the team, and fight through a side-scrolling adventure. Its place in a cross-era list matters because it shows that Marvel gaming’s team fantasy predates today’s cinematic single-player adventures and online shooters. IGN includes it among its 2026 editorial selections, but that list is a candidate set, not proof of a universal ranking. IGN’s 2026 list.

8. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
This crossover fighter turns Marvel heroes into part of a fast, team-based fighting-game format, pairing them with characters from Capcom. Its enduring distinction is how it translates comic-book matchups into a competitive game built around assembling a fighting team. IGN includes it among its 2026 picks. IGN’s list.
9. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes offers a lighter, ensemble-driven way to explore the Marvel universe. Its broad cast and playful tone make it a useful counterpoint to games built around one hero’s dramatic journey. IGN’s 2026 selection includes it as an example of the franchise’s range beyond action realism. IGN’s list.
10. Marvel’s Wolverine
Marvel’s Wolverine is the newest point of comparison on this list, not a title with years of player history behind it. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a worldwide PS5 launch on September 15, 2026. The announcement describes an original Logan action-adventure with combat, stealth, and heightened senses. Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith said the team aimed for an authentic Wolverine experience with a new story that remains true to iconic characters. Sony’s launch announcement.

Why no single Marvel game defines the genre
Marvel’s strongest contribution to games is its adaptability. The same broad universe can support a four-character action RPG, a tactical card-driven battle, a one-player story about a crew, a competitive shooter, or a fighting game. Those formats reward different things: choosing a roster, mastering matchups, reading a battlefield, or spending time with a hero’s story.
That is why “best” depends on the experience a player wants. For a narrative-led entry, choose Spider-Man 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy; for strategy, Midnight Suns; for team building, Ultimate Alliance; and for ongoing online competition, Marvel Rivals. Legacy status alone does not guarantee that an older game is easy to buy or run today, so confirm platform support before purchasing.
