10 Google Drive Alternatives for Privacy, Collaboration, and Storage

Compare ten Google Drive alternatives by privacy, collaboration, media storage, backup, business needs, and ecosystem fit, with practical migration guidance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Google Drive alternative depends on what you want to replace: file storage, online document editing, private file sharing, backup, or the convenience of Google’s connected apps. For a broad mix of storage, sharing, and collaboration, Sync.com is a strong place to start; for media files, consider pCloud; and for privacy-focused storage with built-in document tools, look at Proton Drive. None is a like-for-like substitute for every part of Google Drive.

The ten services below are drawn from Cloudwards’ comparison, updated October 1, 2026. Its rankings, feature descriptions, prices, and test results are that publisher’s assessments, not independent testing for this article. Check each provider’s current plans and feature details before switching.

How to choose a Google Drive alternative

Start with the task you need the replacement to handle. A service built around file sync may be a poor fit if your main need is simultaneous editing in a browser; a backup product may not behave like a shared team drive; and an encrypted storage service may require trade-offs in convenience or collaboration.

  • Privacy: Check whether encryption is provider-managed or client-side/end-to-end, what data it covers, and whether the service can access the keys. A general claim that a service is “encrypted” does not answer those questions.
  • Documents: Separate native document editors from integrations with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace. Integrations are not automatically equivalent to Google Docs’ built-in workflow.
  • Storage and cost: Compare the same capacity, billing period, region, and renewal terms. Published plan prices change, and annual-plan monthly equivalents are not the same as monthly billing.
  • How files are handled: Determine whether the product is primarily sync and sharing, media storage, backup, or a self-hosted collaboration platform. Sync behavior and performance vary.
  • Ecosystem and administration: Microsoft users may value OneDrive or Office integrations; organizations may need Box’s business-oriented controls; self-hosting with Nextcloud offers another operating model but adds setup and maintenance.

The 10 Google Drive alternatives

This comparison emphasizes what each service may suit, along with material limitations described in the reviewed comparison. It is not a claim that every provider is equally suitable for every region, plan, or workflow.

Service Best fit Important consideration
Sync.com Storage, sharing, and Office-connected collaboration Cloudwards reports slower results in its speed tests and a desktop sync model centered on a single folder.
pCloud Storing and playing media The comparison says it lacks document editing and collaboration; its client-side encrypted folder is a paid add-on and limited to one folder.
Internxt Readers prioritizing privacy and security The comparison identifies it as a privacy-focused option; verify current feature and plan details directly before choosing.
Proton Drive Private storage with native document tools Cloudwards describes client-side encryption across storage and native Docs and Sheets collaboration; this does not establish full Google Workspace parity.
Icedrive Readers seeking a straightforward storage service with an encrypted-folder option The comparison reports no document editing or collaboration and slow speeds.
Koofr Readers considering an alternative with Office collaboration Its comparison row describes Microsoft Office collaboration; confirm current availability and plan requirements.
IDrive Storage and backup-oriented needs The comparison lists a 5TB plan, but current terms and whether its backup features match your workflow need checking.
Box Business content collaboration and organizational workflows The comparison lists Microsoft Office and Google Workspace integrations; check current plan tiers for required controls.
Dropbox Familiar file sync and sharing The comparison lists Office and Google Workspace integrations; its assessment notes no client-side encryption for the plan it reviewed.
OneDrive People already using Microsoft services Check the current Microsoft plan for the storage amount and features you need; specific prices and terms are not established here.

1. Sync.com: a broad storage and sharing option

Cloudwards places Sync.com at the top of its alternatives comparison, highlighting Microsoft Office integration, client-side encryption across storage, collaboration, and sharing controls. That mix may suit someone who wants file storage and sharing alongside Office-connected work rather than a media-only vault.

The same comparison reports slower speed-test performance and a simple desktop sync model based on one folder. Those are publisher-reported findings, not results from testing for this article. If you organize work across several independently synced locations or routinely move large files, confirm that the current desktop app supports your preferred setup.

2. pCloud: a media-oriented choice

pCloud is a better match for storing and playing media than for replacing Google Docs. Cloudwards says it does not provide document editing or collaboration. It also describes client-side encryption as a paid add-on limited to one folder, so do not assume all files receive that protection by default.

Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock USB 3.0 256-Bit AES XTS Hardware Encrypted Portable External Hard Drive (A25-3PL256-2000)
  • Hardware encrypted drive
  • Simple to use pin access. RPM-5400
  • Administrator password feature
  • Bus powered
  • Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm

3. Internxt: consider it for a privacy-led shortlist

Cloudwards includes Internxt among the ten and positions it around privacy and security. The available comparison does not establish enough current detail to make specific claims here about its encryption implementation or feature set. Review its current official documentation for the exact plan, encryption coverage, recovery options, and collaboration tools before moving important files.

4. Proton Drive: private storage with native Docs and Sheets

Cloudwards describes Proton Drive as using client-side encryption across storage and offering native Proton Docs and Sheets with real-time collaboration. This makes it a candidate for readers who want storage and browser-based document work in one service. Those features should not be mistaken for full parity with Google Workspace; check whether the specific editing, sharing, and team functions you rely on are available.

5. Icedrive: simple storage with an encrypted-folder option

Icedrive is listed as a user-friendly alternative with an encrypted folder option. Cloudwards reports that it lacks document editing and collaboration and notes slow speeds. It is therefore more relevant if your priority is storing files than maintaining a collaborative document workflow.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

6. Koofr: check the current Office collaboration details

The Cloudwards comparison includes Koofr and describes Microsoft Office collaboration in its comparison row. Because the available details do not establish current plan-specific requirements, verify which Office features are supported and whether they are available on the plan you intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. IDrive: evaluate it as storage and backup, not automatically as a Drive clone

IDrive appears in the comparison as a storage- and backup-oriented option, which may be useful if protecting copies of files is as important as sharing them. Cloudwards’ table shows a 5TB plan, but the current plan terms are not established here. Before choosing it, compare its backup and restore workflow with your need for live collaboration and shared folders.

8. Box: a business-focused collaboration option

Box is included as a cloud content and collaboration service, with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace integrations shown in Cloudwards’ comparison. Its organizational focus may make it worth evaluating for a team, but the relevant administrative controls and features depend on current plan tiers. Confirm those requirements before migrating company data.

9. Dropbox: familiar sync and sharing with an encryption caveat

Cloudwards lists Microsoft Office and Google Workspace integrations for Dropbox. Its comparison assessment says the plan it reviewed did not include client-side encryption. That statement is specific to the reviewed plan context; consult Dropbox’s current security documentation and plan details if client-side encryption is a requirement.

10. OneDrive: a natural option for Microsoft users

OneDrive is the Microsoft-ecosystem option in this list. It is worth comparing if your workflow already relies on Microsoft services, but the details available for this comparison do not establish a current price or specific plan terms. Check Microsoft’s current offering for your country and account type rather than relying on an old storage or price figure.

Which alternative is best for your situation?

  • You need storage, sharing, and Office-connected work: Start by evaluating Sync.com, then confirm the desktop sync model and the collaboration controls you need.
  • You mostly store or play media: Consider pCloud, while accounting for the lack of document editing and the paid, single-folder encryption add-on described by Cloudwards.
  • You want private storage and document editing: Compare Proton Drive’s described client-side encryption and native Docs and Sheets with the exact collaboration functions your team uses.
  • You need a business content platform: Evaluate Box’s current tiers and integrations against your organization’s administration requirements.
  • You rely on Microsoft tools: Compare OneDrive and the Office-connected options, checking current account and plan terms.
  • You primarily need backup: Assess IDrive’s current restore and backup workflow rather than treating storage capacity alone as proof it replaces Drive.
  • You want to run your own platform: Nextcloud is an open-source content collaboration platform, but self-hosting means arranging and maintaining the server infrastructure yourself. It is a different operating model from signing up for managed cloud storage.

Free plans and prices: compare current terms, not old snapshots

Cloudwards’ October 1, 2026 comparison lists examples including Sync.com at 5GB free and 2TB for $4.80 per month on a one-year plan; pCloud at 10GB free and 2TB for $8.33 per month on a one-year plan; and Proton Drive at 5GB free and 200GB for $3.99 per month on a one-year plan. These are figures published in that editorial comparison, not current official quotes from the providers. They may change, and the monthly amounts shown for annual plans should not be read as month-to-month rates.

  • Super fast USB 3.0 Connection - Data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than USB 2.0

  • Brute Force Self Destruct Feature

Free storage is useful for testing an app or moving a small set of files, but the largest free allowance is not necessarily the best choice. Check whether the free tier includes the sharing, recovery, encryption, and collaboration functions you need, and compare renewal pricing and storage limits before committing.

How to move files from Google Drive

Moving files is a separate task from choosing a service: a storage account does not automatically reproduce Google Docs workflows, sharing permissions, or team structure. Use a deliberate migration so you can verify files before deleting anything from Drive.

  1. Inventory your Drive: Identify folders, shared files, large items, and Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides that require special handling. Note who needs access to shared material.
  2. Choose a destination and test it: Confirm the new service has enough capacity and supports the file types, desktop sync, collaboration, and sharing controls you require. Upload a small sample first.
  3. Export or download your files: Use Google Drive’s available download or export options. Google-native documents may need conversion to formats supported by the destination; inspect converted files for layout or feature changes.
  4. Upload in manageable batches: Preserve a clear folder structure, avoid changing files in two places during the move, and keep the original Drive copy intact while transfer is underway.
  5. Verify the result: Compare folder contents, open representative documents, check media playback where relevant, and test access for collaborators.
  6. Rebuild sharing and collaboration: Do not assume existing Drive permissions or live editing arrangements transfer. Invite people and set access in the new service, then confirm the workflow with them.
  7. Retire the old copy only when ready: Keep a separate backup until you have verified the files and confirmed that collaborators can work as expected.

When self-hosting may make more sense

For readers who want more control over where a collaboration platform runs, Nextcloud offers a self-hosted route. Its official site describes it as an open-source content collaboration platform. Unlike a managed service, self-hosting requires you to provide infrastructure and take responsibility for setup, updates, availability, and backups. Choose it for the operating model and control you want, not simply because it is another name on a cloud-storage list.
