For North American subscribers, ten notable Super Nintendo originals are absent from Nintendo’s current US SNES Classics catalog: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer, Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, and Mega Man X2. This is an editorial selection, not a definitive ranking or a claim that these are the only worthwhile omissions. The catalog is regional and can change; Nintendo says its Classics libraries “will continue to grow.”
What does “missing from Switch Online” mean?
This list checks Nintendo’s US Super Nintendo Classics catalog. The ten SNES originals below do not appear on its included-games list as checked for this article. That says nothing by itself about whether a remake, later port, or other version is available on Switch or another platform; those are separate releases. Catalogs also vary by region: Nintendo’s Australian collection page, for example, identifies some games as Japanese-version-only.

“Essential” here means a selection that represents different strengths of the SNES library: landmark and ensemble RPGs, action RPGs, a beat ’em up, and a precision platformer. The sequence is for variety, not a score-based ranking.

10 essential SNES games still missing from the US catalog
1. Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger is the time-spanning role-playing game that makes an easy anchor for any discussion of notable SNES omissions. Its era-hopping premise and broad adventure scope give the list a flagship RPG entry. GamesRadar places it second in its best SNES games ranking and lists 1995 as its release year; MeriStation also names it among games it would like to see on Switch Online.

- 🎮 Works with SNES, Retron 2, Retron 3, Retro Trio. Please note that this product is not compatible with Retron 5 and games won't show up.
2. Final Fantasy VI
Where Chrono Trigger centers its adventure on time travel, Final Fantasy VI stands out for its large ensemble and cinematic scope. It is a strong turn-based RPG counterpoint and a conspicuous absence for players seeking the series’ 16-bit era. One naming wrinkle: Nintendo’s North American Super NES Classic Edition lineup calls the original game Final Fantasy III; that is the regional name for the game commonly known elsewhere as Final Fantasy VI. That Classic Edition lineup is a historical reference, not the Switch Online catalog.
3. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
This Nintendo–Squaresoft collaboration puts Mario in a distinctive role-playing adventure, with a tone and structure unlike the mainline platformers. Its inclusion would add a different side of the Mushroom Kingdom to the subscription collection. Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition games list includes the original. MeriStation notes that Switch has a remake while arguing for the original experience; a remake and the SNES release are not the same catalog entry.

4. Secret of Mana
Secret of Mana broadens the list beyond turn-based combat with an action-RPG adventure. Its real-time battles and party-oriented journey offer a different pace from the long-form RPGs above. Nintendo included it in the Super NES Classic Edition lineup, but it is absent from the current US Switch Online SNES list.
5. Terranigma
Terranigma brings a distinctive creation-and-restoration premise to the action-RPG group. The adventure’s unusual high-level conceit makes it a useful pick for readers looking beyond the most familiar SNES franchises. MeriStation includes it among its desired additions.

6. Illusion of Gaia
Illusion of Gaia is a story-led action RPG and a natural companion to Terranigma in a list that aims to show the era’s range beyond turn-based adventures and Nintendo’s best-known properties. Its absence is confirmed against Nintendo’s current US included-games list.
7. Soul Blazer
Soul Blazer adds another action RPG for players who prefer movement and real-time encounters to menu-driven battles. Alongside Secret of Mana, Terranigma, and Illusion of Gaia, it makes the action-RPG strand of the list visible rather than treating RPGs as a single genre.
Rank #4
8. Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Lufia II is the turn-based choice for players who want dungeon puzzles alongside party progression. It helps balance the list’s action RPGs and offers a different reason to revisit a longer SNES adventure.
9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
This arcade-style beat ’em up is the genre counterpoint to the RPG-heavy picks. Its recognizable license and multiplayer-friendly format make it an appealing option for shorter, more social sessions. GamesRadar includes it in its SNES ranking; the SNES original is not on Nintendo’s current US Classics catalog list.

10. Mega Man X2
Mega Man X2 closes the sequence with a fast action-platformer built around precise play, rather than the extended commitment of the RPG picks. The absence claim is specifically about the SNES original in the US SNES Classics collection, not every version of the game.

The best first addition depends on what you want from a retro library, not on a single universal ranking. Use these distinctions to narrow the list:
- For a long-form, turn-based RPG: start with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, or Lufia II; the latter is the pick here that specifically pairs party progression with dungeon puzzles.
- For real-time action with RPG progression: consider Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia, or Soul Blazer.
- For a shorter action session or multiplayer-friendly genre: Turtles in Time is the beat ’em up choice.
- For precision platforming: Mega Man X2 supplies the list’s fast, action-focused alternative.
- If you specifically want the original SNES release: distinguish it from a remake or later port. A Switch remake, such as the one MeriStation identifies for Super Mario RPG, does not mean the SNES original has been added to the subscription catalog.
Membership and controller details
Nintendo says access to the classic collections requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Its support FAQ also says offline play still requires membership verification every seven days. Nintendo further states that it has no plans to sell these classic games outside the Switch Online service, so a missing SNES title should not be assumed to have a separate purchase option through Nintendo.
