1. Set Back Tap to run an action without opening an app
Back Tap turns a double- or triple-tap on the back of an iPhone into a shortcut. Apple says it works on iPhone 8 or later and can trigger actions such as taking a screenshot, opening Control Center, or running an accessibility action or Shortcut. See Apple’s Back Tap setup instructions.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.
- Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap.
- Select the action you want that gesture to perform.
- Tap the back of your iPhone twice or three times to try it.
Choose an action you use often but do not need constantly; assigning both gestures gives you two separate triggers. The feature is a good fit for screenshots or accessibility controls, but it may take practice to trigger reliably through a case or while holding the phone.

Live Text can recognize text in the camera frame so you can select and copy it instead of typing it. Apple says it can also support actions such as translating, looking up, searching the web, sharing, calling a number, opening a website, emailing, or converting currency. The exact options depend on what the text contains and on language and regional availability. Apple’s guide is Use Live Text with your iPhone camera.

- Open Camera and point it at the printed or displayed text.
- When the detected-text control appears, tap it.
- Select the words or details you need.
- Choose an available action, such as Copy or Translate.
This is useful for a sign, menu, label, or document you need to quote or act on. If text is not detected, try steadier framing and better light; Live Text is not available for every language or region.
3. Select text in a photo or paused video
Live Text is not limited to the live camera view. In Photos or another supported app, open an image or pause a video on a frame containing text, then tap the detected text control to select it. Depending on the content and availability, you can copy or translate text, search the web, call a number, get directions, or convert currency. Apple describes the feature in its Live Text guide.
- Open the photo, or pause the video on the frame with the text.
- Tap the detected-text control if it appears.
- Select the text or detail you want.
- Choose an available action from the selection menu.
A paused frame is especially handy for capturing a web address, phone number, or short instruction from a clip without transcribing it by hand. Actions shown can differ by app, text, language, and region.
4. Use visual intelligence to understand what is in view
Visual intelligence can work with both the physical world and onscreen content. Depending on the task, it can identify plants or animals, translate or summarize text, read text aloud, search visually, answer questions, or turn information on a flyer into a Calendar event. Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max among supported models; the feature’s language and regional availability varies. Consult Apple’s visual intelligence guide for current device and use details.

When available on your iPhone, open visual intelligence using the control provided for your device, then point the camera at something or select onscreen content. Choose a suggested action or ask a question about what is visible. For example, a flyer can provide event details to add to Calendar, subject to your review.
Visual intelligence may use Apple Intelligence capabilities, while actions such as web search involve online services. Treat results as assistance rather than verification: check important dates, translations, identifications, and event details before relying on them.
5. Use Focus to quiet the notifications that can wait
Focus modes let you decide which notifications are silenced or allowed for activities such as work, sleep, or driving. Apple’s current iPhone guide covers Focus and Do Not Disturb; exact labels and options can differ with iOS version. Start in Settings > Focus, choose a mode, and configure the people and apps you want to allow or silence. Apple’s Focus setup guide has the current steps.
Focus is more useful when it reflects a real boundary: allow the people or apps you need for that activity, and silence the rest. Review the allowed list before relying on a mode so an important contact or alert is not unintentionally muted.

6. Reach upper-screen controls with Reachability
Reachability brings the top portion of the screen within easier thumb range on supported configurations. Apple includes it among iPhone mobility features, but the gesture and menu wording can differ by model and settings. Check Apple’s iPhone accessibility guide for the instructions that match your device and iOS version.
If the control is available, enable Reachability in the relevant accessibility settings and use the gesture shown for your iPhone. It is most helpful when you are holding the phone in one hand and need to tap something near the top of the display.
7. Let Text Replacement type your common phrases
Text Replacement expands a short shortcut into a longer phrase as you type. Use it for a frequently entered address, email response, or other wording you want to avoid retyping. Apple lists Text Replacement in its text-editing guidance. Find it under Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement; if the labels differ on your iOS version, use Settings search for “Text Replacement.”
- Open Text Replacement and tap the add control.
- Enter the full phrase in the Phrase field.
- Enter a distinctive abbreviation in the Shortcut field.
- Save it, then type the shortcut in a text field and accept the suggested expansion.
Use shortcuts that are unlikely to appear in ordinary words, especially for personal details. That reduces accidental expansions in messages or documents.

8. Turn a charging iPhone into a StandBy display
StandBy shows useful information while an iPhone is charging and positioned on its side. The available views and display behavior depend on the model and iOS version. Apple’s StandBy guide explains setup and current behavior.
To try it, connect the iPhone to a charger, set it on its side, and check the screen for StandBy. If it does not appear or behave as expected, confirm that your iOS version and model support the mode and follow the current guide’s requirements.
9. Record your screen to show a problem or walkthrough
Screen recording captures what happens on your iPhone, which can make an app walkthrough or bug reproduction easier to share. Add Screen Recording to Control Center, then open Control Center and tap its recording control. For a narration, touch and hold the control and choose the microphone option before starting. Apple’s screen recording instructions cover the current controls.

Before sharing a recording, check it for private messages, account details, or notifications that appeared during capture.

10. Scan QR codes and open App Clips when a service supports them
iPhone can scan QR codes, and a code for a supported service may open an App Clip: a small part of an app that can provide a service without installing the full app. Apple’s QR-code scanning guide and App Clips guide explain the built-in options.
Open Camera, point it at the QR code, and tap the on-screen link when it appears. What happens next depends on the code and service: it may open a website, or offer an App Clip if one is available. Use QR codes from sources you trust and check the destination before continuing.
Which features should you try first?
For an immediate everyday payoff, set one Back Tap action, create a Text Replacement for a phrase you type repeatedly, and configure a Focus mode around an activity that needs fewer interruptions. Try Live Text the next time you need details from a photo or sign. If your model supports visual intelligence, explore it for a specific task and verify the result before acting on it.
