Zone Bit Recording: How It Compares With Fixed-Count Layouts

Zone bit recording divides hard-disk tracks into zones, placing more sectors on longer outer tracks to use platter space efficiently and increase sequential transfer rates by location.

Zone bit recording (ZBR), also called zoned bit recording, is a hard-disk layout that divides tracks into zones and stores more sectors on outer tracks than on inner ones. Because outer tracks have a longer circumference, this arrangement uses more of the platter’s recording area and can deliver higher sequential transfer rates when the disk spins at a constant rate.

How zone bit recording works

A hard-disk platter has concentric tracks at different distances from its center. A track farther from the spindle is longer around than one near the center. ZBR groups tracks into zones and assigns more sectors to each track in zones nearer the outside of the platter.

In a layout that uses the same number of sectors on every track, the extra length of the outer tracks is not used as fully. By putting more sectors there, ZBR makes more effective use of the recording area and increases capacity compared with that fixed-count layout. Thomas M. Ruwart describes the benefit in Disk Subsystem Performance Evaluation: “This allows for more efficient utilization of the recording area and hence greater overall capacity.”

Why outer zones can transfer data faster

When a disk rotates at a constant speed, each revolution moves a track beneath the read/write head. Since an outer track contains more sectors, more recorded data can pass beneath the head during one turn than on an inner track. Sequential transfer rates can therefore be higher in outer zones and vary with where data is located on the disk.

This describes a directional effect, not a universal speed figure. The difference depends on the drive; the cited sources do not establish a percentage that applies to current hard drives. ZBR’s effect on sequential transfer rate also does not, by itself, establish seek time, latency, or a guaranteed improvement in application performance.

Zone bit recording compared with a fixed-count layout

Feature Zone bit recording Same sector count on every track
Sectors per track More on outer tracks than inner tracks Uniform across tracks
Use of platter area Uses the longer outer tracks more fully Does not increase the sector count to match outer-track length
Sequential transfer by location Can be higher in outer zones at constant rotational speed Does not gain that outer-zone advantage from additional sectors per track

An internal hard disk drive is a physical example of hardware associated with this recording method. ZBR is a way to organize data on a disk, not a product a reader needs to buy to understand the concept.

What the term means—and what it does not promise

Sources use both “zoned bit recording” and “zone bit recording”; the technical term is also abbreviated ZBR. The key idea is the uneven number of sectors per track across zones. It explains why a disk can use its surface more efficiently and why sequential throughput may vary by location, but it is not a standalone guarantee of a particular drive’s overall speed.
