Zcash offers shielded transactions alongside transparent ones, so privacy depends on the address type and the wallet path you use. Monero’s project documentation describes transaction privacy as mandatory: stealth addresses, ring signatures, and RingCT are designed to conceal the recipient, create ambiguity about the sender, and hide the amount. Neither approach protects you from every form of identification, device compromise, or exposed network metadata.
How their privacy models differ
| Privacy question | Zcash | Monero |
|---|---|---|
| Is transaction privacy optional? | Yes. Zcash supports shielded and transparent transactions; wallet behavior determines which path is available or used. Zcash’s shielded-transaction explainer and address guide describe the distinction. | Monero’s project documentation says network transactions are private by mandate and users cannot accidentally send a transparent transaction. This is the project’s description, not an independent security audit. Monero privacy FAQ |
| What transaction information is concealed? | Shielded activity conceals addresses, amounts, and memos from public view. Transparent activity exposes wallet and transaction information on the public blockchain. Zcash explainer and traceability explainer | Stealth addresses conceal the recipient, ring signatures make the sender ambiguous among plausible outputs, and RingCT hides amounts. Stealth addresses, ring signatures, and RingCT |
| Can you selectively disclose activity? | Shielded and transparent paths differ in what is publicly visible; the reviewed materials do not establish a comparable, general disclosure key for Zcash. | A private view key can show incoming transactions, but Monero’s documentation says it cannot reliably reveal outgoing transactions. It is not a complete audit key. Monero view-key explanation |
| What does wallet or node setup affect? | Some wallets shield by default, some let users choose, and some support only transparent transactions. A wallet may also automatically shield funds received from transparent addresses; this feature does not make the whole transaction history shielded. Zcash address guide | Local synchronization scans the chain on your device without sharing a key with the node. Remote synchronization can be faster, but shares a private view key with the server and may reduce privacy if you do not control it. A remote node operator may also see your IP address. What Zcash privacy means in practice
Zcash is not uniformly private or uniformly public. It gives users both shielded and transparent transaction types. On the shielded path, transaction information such as addresses, amounts, and memos is concealed from public view. On the transparent path, wallet and transaction details are visible on the public blockchain.

The wallet matters because its defaults and available features shape the transaction you actually make. Some wallets shield by default, some offer a choice, and some only support transparent activity. Before sending, check the wallet’s description and transaction details to confirm that the transfer stays on the shielded path. If a wallet automatically shields funds received from a transparent address, that describes a wallet behavior—not a guarantee that every step in the funds’ history is shielded.
How Monero conceals transaction details
Monero’s privacy model combines three technologies, each aimed at a different part of a transaction:
#1 Best Overall
- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Stealth addresses: create one-time addresses for received payments, concealing the recipient’s public address from observers.
- Ring signatures: place the real signer among plausible outputs, making the sender ambiguous to an outside observer.
- RingCT: hides transaction amounts.
Monero’s project FAQ says privacy is mandatory at the transaction level, rather than a mode a user can turn off to make a transparent transaction. Treat that as the project’s account of its design, not as a claim that a user or transaction is impossible to identify through other means.
Disclosure, wallet connectivity, and operational tradeoffs
Monero view keys offer limited disclosure
A Monero account has private view and spend keys. Sharing a view key can let another party see incoming transactions, which may support limited monitoring or disclosure. According to Monero’s documentation, outgoing transactions cannot be reliably viewed with that key, so it does not provide a complete account of activity.

Local and remote synchronization have different privacy costs
With local synchronization, the wallet scans the blockchain on your device without sharing a key with the node. Remote synchronization can be faster, but it shares a private view key with the server; using a server you do not control can lessen privacy. Separately, Monero’s FAQ warns that a remote node operator may see the IP address connecting to it. Concealing blockchain transaction details does not by itself conceal your network connection.
Protect keys, devices, and accounts
Privacy protocols do not undo information you disclose to a counterparty or protect secrets exposed elsewhere. Monero’s FAQ warns that revealed identities or secret keys, compromised devices and keyloggers, weak passwords, and unsafe seed storage such as cloud backups can put users at risk. A hardware wallet can help with custody and transaction signing, but it does not make an on-chain transaction more private.

Which one fits your use case?
- Consider Zcash if you need the option to make shielded transactions or transparent ones, and you are prepared to verify that your wallet supports and uses the shielded path when privacy is your goal.
- Consider Monero if you want transaction-level privacy to be the default design rather than choosing between shielded and transparent transaction types, and you understand the node and network metadata tradeoffs.
- For limited incoming-payment disclosure, Monero’s view key may help, but it should not be treated as a complete audit record.
- For either currency, account and device security, careful key handling, and attention to network exposure remain necessary.
The official project descriptions reviewed here do not provide a controlled, quantitative comparison of transaction costs or performance, so they do not support a claim that one is cheaper or faster overall. Wallet behavior and compatibility can change; check the relevant project documentation for current details before choosing a wallet or node setup.
