Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Bitcoin makes confirmed transaction records public; its addresses are pseudonymous, not anonymous. Zcash supports both transparent transactions and shielded transactions, which use zero-knowledge proofs to keep transaction data encrypted while network nodes verify them. So the key difference is the transaction path: Bitcoin’s on-chain activity is publicly visible, while Zcash’s shielded path conceals transaction details. Neither fact alone guarantees that a person’s identity or activity is impossible to uncover.
What is visible on each blockchain?
| Question | Bitcoin | Zcash |
|---|---|---|
| What the protocol supports | Confirmed transactions are published on a public blockchain. Addresses are pseudonymous. | Transparent transactions, similar to Bitcoin, and shielded paths that encrypt transaction data. |
| Privacy mechanism | Pseudonymous addresses; transaction records remain public. | Zero-knowledge proofs let network nodes verify shielded transactions while transaction data remains encrypted. |
| What analysis can examine | Public transactions and relationships between addresses. Linking an address to a person requires attribution beyond simply reading the ledger. | Transparent transactions and observable flows into or out of shielded pools. This does not establish visibility into the details of a fully shielded transaction. |
Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin as “probably the most transparent payment network in the world.” The ledger’s openness makes activity traceable, but a visible address is not automatically a known person. Zcash documentation describes shielded addresses as using zero-knowledge proofs so transaction data can be encrypted and still verified by network nodes. Bitcoin.org’s privacy guidance and Zcash’s address documentation explain these distinctions.

How transaction tracking works
Bitcoin: public flows, separate identity attribution
Because confirmed Bitcoin transactions are public, analysts can follow transactions and examine relationships among addresses. Connecting an address to a real-world identity is a separate step, typically based on identifying information or activity linked to that address. Chainalysis describes Bitcoin as pseudonymous rather than anonymous and says blockchain analysis can connect addresses to real-world entities. That is a claim about analysis and attribution, not proof that every address can be identified. Chainalysis’s explanation of Bitcoin addresses discusses the distinction.

Transparent Zcash transactions expose activity in a way similar to Bitcoin. Shielded transfers instead conceal transaction data under the protocol’s zero-knowledge design. When funds enter or leave a shielded pool, the boundary flow can be observable even though that observation does not, by itself, reveal the details of a fully shielded transaction.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Chainalysis says it supports Zcash analysis for non-shielded transactions and can identify and monitor transfers into, out of, and between shielded pools. This describes the vendor’s stated analytics capabilities and observable flows; it should not be read as a claim that it can read fully shielded transaction contents or break Zcash’s cryptography. Chainalysis’s Zcash overview describes its approach.
Is Zcash private by default?
Zcash is not automatically private for every transaction. The protocol supports transparent and shielded paths, so the relevant question is whether a particular transaction uses shielded addresses and transfers. Transparent activity remains visible; shielded-path confidentiality applies to transaction data covered by the protocol’s design.

Neither a public ledger nor a shielded transaction settles every question of identity. Public activity, identifying information associated with an address, and other off-chain links can provide context. Shielding transaction data is a protocol-level privacy feature, not a blanket promise that all practical sources of attribution disappear. Zcash’s documentation describes address and value-pool mechanics, while an SEC-filed issuer disclosure discusses the possibility that cryptographic privacy protections could fail; the filing is historical context, not a live assessment of protocol status. The SEC-filed disclosure should be read with that limitation in mind.

For on-chain transaction details, Bitcoin is more transparent: confirmed records are public. Zcash’s transparent paths can also be analyzed, while its shielded paths conceal transaction data and leave certain pool-boundary flows observable. How much can be attributed to a person depends on the available identifying links, not just the coin or address format.

There is no supported current percentage here for how much Zcash activity is shielded, or how much activity analysts can attribute. A single percentage would need a date, a measurement method, and a clear definition of what counts as shielded or attributable.
