A video that is hard to find is not proof YouTube deleted it. Check the video’s notice in YouTube Studio first: a Community Guidelines removal, a Content ID claim, a copyright takedown, and a channel termination are different situations with different remedies.
How to tell whether YouTube removed a video
Sign in to YouTube Studio and look for a notice beside the video or on the dashboard. Open the notice and review the stated reason and any affected material. YouTube’s video removal troubleshooting guide describes the notice language and directs creators to the relevant details.

If you have no removal notice, do not assume the video was formally deleted. Check that you are signed into the right channel and account, then inspect Studio and account email for a notice. The available information about an individual video’s status comes from your account; the general troubleshooting guide cannot identify the cause for you.

What to do about a Community Guidelines removal
- In YouTube Studio, open the video’s notice or the Channel violations card.
- Read the policy YouTube identifies and compare it with the video’s content and context.
- If you believe the decision is mistaken, use the appeal option shown in the notice or Studio. Explain the specific reason you believe the policy was applied incorrectly.
- Do not delete the video before deciding whether to appeal. YouTube says deletion does not clear a strike and prevents you from appealing that removal again.
YouTube’s current guidance allows up to one year to appeal a content removal. Warnings and strikes have a separate six-month appeal window, and each strike may be appealed once. Confirm the deadline and available option in your own notice and the live Community Guidelines appeal guidance before acting.

How to respond to a copyright notice
Content ID claim
A Content ID claim is not the same as a formal copyright removal request. It may affect monetization, visibility, or audio—for example, a video may be muted or blocked in some or all regions. Open Copyright Details in Studio to see what material was matched and which options apply to that claim.
Copyright removal request and strike
A copyright removal request is a legal request, usually made by a copyright owner or an authorized representative. If YouTube finds it appears valid, the video is removed and the channel receives a copyright strike. YouTube lists three ways to resolve a strike: complete Copyright School and wait 90 days for the strike to expire, ask the claimant to retract the request, or submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for a copyright exception.

Completing Copyright School and waiting for the strike to expire does not restore the removed video. A counter notification is a legal process, not a guaranteed recovery option; review the requirements and consequences in YouTube’s copyright strike guidance before submitting one.

Scheduled removal request
If YouTube says a copyright removal request is scheduled, the notice may give you seven days to take specified steps before the removal and strike take effect. The available actions depend on the request’s stage, so follow the instructions and deadline in the notice rather than assuming every case offers the same choices.

What to do if YouTube terminated your channel
A channel termination is different from an individual video removal. YouTube lists repeated Community Guidelines or Terms of Service violations, a single severe abuse case, or a channel dedicated to a policy violation among its stated reasons. Start with the termination email or the information displayed in Studio.
For a Community Guidelines termination, use the appeal route in Studio. YouTube’s current guidance allows up to one year to appeal, subject to limits on the number of attempts. Copyright-related terminations follow a different process; a counter notification may be relevant if you believe the copyright claims are incorrect. Read the applicable channel termination guidance and your notice before responding.

YouTube says a terminated channel can no longer download its YouTube content through that channel, though Google data remains downloadable. A backup stored separately can preserve your own copy for the future, but it cannot restore a video on YouTube or change an enforcement decision.

Before you submit an appeal or copyright response
- Save the exact wording of the notice and note its date and any deadline.
- Use the route for the specific action: a Community Guidelines appeal does not replace a copyright response.
- Explain the relevant facts clearly. Avoid submitting a counter notification unless you understand that it is a legal process.
- Check the live YouTube Help page and your Studio notice, since interface labels and procedures can change.
