First checks that solve most 0% uploads
Start with the fastest, highest-success actions. If you’re trying to upload from a computer browser, a restart or cache clear can fix what looks like a broken upload flow.
Confirm it’s not just the file
Create a new test upload with a small video (for example, 10–30 seconds). Export at the same settings you normally use, then try again. If the test uploads, your original file or encoding is the problem.
Restart the upload session
On desktop, close the upload dialog and reload YouTube Studio. If you’re on mobile, fully exit the YouTube app and reopen it. Stuck upload state is frequently stored in the active session.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use a different upload method to isolate the failure
Try the browser version first, then try either the YouTube app or a different browser. If uploads work in another browser, it’s almost always cache, cookies, or extensions.
Fixes for browser uploads (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
If your upload is stuck at 0% in one browser, focus on cookies, storage permissions, and extensions. YouTube Studio relies heavily on third-party scripts and upload endpoints.
Chrome (desktop)
Chrome is the most common environment for upload issues, especially when extensions block requests or cookies are partially cleared.
- Open chrome://settings/cookies and confirm third-party cookies aren’t fully blocked for YouTube usage. If you use strict blocking, try temporarily allowing cookies for youtube.com and googlevideo.com.
- Disable extensions temporarily: click the puzzle icon → turn off extensions (start with ad blockers, privacy blockers, script blockers like uBlock Origin, and VPN-related extensions).
- Hard refresh the upload page: press Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (macOS).
- Clear site data for YouTube only: go to YouTube Studio, click the padlock icon in the address bar → Site settings → Clear data.
- Try a fresh upload in an Incognito window (Incognito preserves less session data). If Incognito works, re-enable extensions one by one to find the culprit.
Firefox (desktop)
Firefox users often hit upload blocks via Enhanced Tracking Protection or strict cookie controls.

- Disable add-ons temporarily (especially privacy/ad blocking extensions) and retry the upload.
- Clear cache for the YouTube domain only: Preferences → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data → search youtube → Remove.
Microsoft Edge (desktop)
Edge issues often come from tracking prevention or saved site permissions.
- Open Edge Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete site data → search for youtube and remove site data.
- Temporarily disable tracking prevention for YouTube: go to the address bar → site controls → adjust tracking prevention for youtube.com.
- Turn off extensions and try again (same logic as Chrome).
- Retry after a full browser restart.
Fixes for mobile uploads (iPhone, iPad, Android)
On mobile, uploads at 0% can be caused by background restrictions, unstable mobile data/Wi‑Fi transitions, or app permissions.
iPhone and iPad (YouTube app)
Start with permissions and network stability.
- Update the YouTube app: App Store → search YouTube → Update.
- Check app permissions: Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → make sure YouTube is allowed to access photos/videos.
- Make sure you’re not switching networks mid-upload. Stay on one connection (Wi‑Fi or cellular) for the whole process.
- Disable Low Power Mode: Settings → Battery → turn off Low Power Mode while uploading.
- Force restart the app: swipe it away in the app switcher, then reopen.
- Try a different file stored in Photos to confirm it’s file-specific or app/session-specific.
Android (YouTube app)
Android power management and permissions are the usual culprits.
- Update YouTube in Google Play.
- Check storage permissions: Settings → Apps → YouTube → Permissions → allow Photos and videos (wording can vary by device).
- Disable Data Saver for YouTube: Settings → Network & Internet → Data usage → Data Saver → turn off, or add YouTube to allowed apps.
- Disable battery optimization for YouTube: Settings → Battery → Battery optimization → All apps → YouTube → set to Don’t optimize.
- Try switching from Wi‑Fi to cellular (or vice versa) to rule out local router/firewall issues.
Verify your video file and upload settings
If 0% persists across browsers and devices, YouTube may not be accepting the file. That can happen with unsupported codecs, unusual container formats, variable frame-rate quirks, or corrupted exports.
Use a compatible container, codec, and audio
YouTube commonly works best with MP4 (H.264 video + AAC audio). If your file is in MOV, MKV, or uses uncommon codecs, re-encode.
| Recommended upload format | Common good settings | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | H.264 (AVC) + AAC audio | Weird or unsupported codec combos |
| Frame rate | Match your footage (30 or 60 fps are fine) | Variable frame rate that causes decode issues |
| Audio | AAC LC | Multi-channel formats that get remuxed incorrectly |
Check file integrity
Play the video file end-to-end locally before uploading. If the file freezes, stutters, or fails to seek properly, it may be corrupted—YouTube may refuse the upload from the start.
Re-export to a known-good baseline
Even if it seems redundant, a clean re-export often resolves codec/container mismatch. If you use editing software, export as MP4 H.264 + AAC, constant frame rate if possible, and a standard audio sample rate (commonly 48 kHz).

When the upload starts but fails later (what to do even if it isn’t 0%)
Sometimes it looks like 0% because the progress indicator doesn’t move while an initial analysis runs. If you see an error later (or it never gets past early percentages), try these steps.

Watch for specific error messages
Different messages point to different causes (format rejection, network interruption, or policy restrictions). If the UI shows a reason, copy it exactly when troubleshooting.
Try the same upload on a different connection
Corporate networks and some home routers can block upload endpoints or cap sustained traffic. Try tethering to a phone hotspot for 1 upload test.
Advanced troubleshooting: network, DNS, extensions, and storage
If your upload is stuck at 0% on multiple browsers/devices, you may be fighting network-level interference.
Disable VPN or proxy
A VPN can break upload handshakes or cause long initial connections. Temporarily disable it and retry.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Change DNS (fast test)
On desktop, switching DNS providers can resolve routing problems. Try a reputable DNS like Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1). After changing, restart your browser and retry.
Test router and browser caching side effects
If you recently changed router settings, installed a security app, or updated ad-blockers, revert those changes temporarily. Over-aggressive security tools can intercept upload requests.

Check local disk space
Some browsers and upload flows need temporary cache storage for thumbnails and upload preparation. If your device storage is nearly full, free up space and retry.
Check YouTube Studio and account constraints
When YouTube blocks upload creation, the UI may hang at 0% rather than giving a clear explanation. Account standing and channel status matter.
Verify the account is allowed to upload
Go to YouTube Studio → Content (or Create → Upload videos) and confirm you can open the upload flow normally. If the upload button is missing or restricted, it’s an account-level limitation.
Check for upload restrictions due to policy actions
If your channel has had enforcement actions, it can affect uploads. Review the YouTube Studio notifications and channel status messages for any upload-related warnings.
Try signing out and back in
On desktop: sign out of YouTube, close the browser, reopen, and sign in again. Stale auth tokens can prevent the upload request from being accepted.

Split the video into shorter segments
If the file is long (or very large), split into 2–5 shorter files and upload them individually. This also helps isolate whether the issue is tied to duration/size.
Generate a fresh copy with a “remux” only if needed
If the video decodes fine but the container is odd, a remux (copy streams into a new MP4 container) can fix metadata issues. If you’re unsure, re-encode instead—more work, but usually more reliable.
Common mistakes that keep uploads at 0%
- Using a locked-down browser profile: privacy tools or script blockers that block YouTube upload endpoints.
- Switching networks mid-upload: moving from Wi‑Fi to cellular often stalls uploads at the first stage.
- Uploading a corrupted export: the file won’t play cleanly end-to-end.
- Unexpected file format: MKV, AVI, or HEVC-in-a-container that your device exported but YouTube rejects for the upload pipeline.
- Leaving the app in background on mobile: battery optimization can pause upload tasks.
- Trying only one device: if you never test another browser/app/device, you can’t separate file problems from upload-session problems.
Troubleshooting checklist (fast path)
Use this as a strict sequence. Stop when you see your upload advance beyond 0% or complete successfully.
- Try a small test video (10–30 seconds) in the same workflow.
- Restart the upload session (reload Studio / force-close the mobile app).
- Try a different browser (or Incognito on the same browser).
- Disable extensions (ad blockers, privacy/script/VPN-related extensions).
- Clear site data only for YouTube (not your whole browser profile).
- Try a different network (phone hotspot is the quickest isolation test).
- Re-export the video as MP4 H.264 + AAC; confirm the file plays end-to-end.
- On mobile, verify Photos/video permissions and disable battery/data saver restrictions for YouTube.
- Sign out of YouTube and sign back in.
- Check YouTube Studio notifications for any upload restrictions.
FAQs
Why does my YouTube upload stay at 0% even though the video is small?
If it’s small and still stuck at 0%, it’s usually not bandwidth. Most often it’s a browser session issue (cookies/storage/extensions) or an account/server constraint that blocks the upload request before any data transfer.
Does a VPN cause uploads to stall at 0%?
Yes. A VPN can interfere with the initial connection to YouTube’s upload endpoints or trigger security checks. Turn it off for one test upload to confirm.
Can YouTube reject my video before it starts uploading?
Yes. If the file uses unsupported codecs/containers or is corrupted, YouTube may not accept the upload and you’ll never see progress move. Re-encoding to MP4 H.264 + AAC is the most reliable fix.
Is it safe to keep retrying uploads while it’s stuck at 0%?
It’s safe, but repeated retries can make debugging harder and may trigger rate limits depending on your environment. If multiple retries fail, switch browsers or networks instead of hammering the same setup.

Bottom Line
YouTube uploads stuck at 0% are usually fixable once you isolate whether it’s a file/format problem, a session/browser issue, or a network constraint. Start with a small test upload, then switch browser/device and test a different network.
If the same file fails everywhere, re-encode to MP4 H.264 + AAC and confirm the file plays flawlessly. If only one browser or device fails, clear YouTube site data, disable extensions, and verify permissions and power/network settings.
