YouTube is testing a new Home page experience that gives more control over the suggested content you see. If you’ve noticed your Home layout looks different—or you’re seeing new options tied to recommendations—this guide shows you exactly how to use those controls and what to do when they don’t behave as expected.
Even if you never get the test, the same recommendation controls still matter: history, personalization settings, and per-video feedback can drastically change what YouTube shows next.

What YouTube’s Home Page Suggestion Controls Could Change
YouTube’s Home page is a mix of subscriptions, browsing history, watch behavior, and signals from what you watch, search, like, and skip. A test that adds “more control” typically means you’ll see clearer options to influence or limit suggested items.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, the new Home page test may introduce one or more of these changes:
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- More visible “feedback” actions on suggested rows (for example, “Not interested” or similar controls).
- Category- or topic-level controls that let you tune your interests instead of only editing history.
- Different placement rules for suggested videos versus subscription activity, affecting what you see at the top of Home.
- More granular handling of watch behavior, such as improved grouping of content you repeatedly ignore.
The exact UI wording varies by account and roll-out window, but the goal stays the same: fewer irrelevant recommendations and faster correction when your interests change.
Before You Start: What You’ll Need and What to Check
You can’t force the test to appear, but you can verify whether your account is getting the new Home experience and whether your personalization settings are turned on.
Prerequisites
- You’re signed into the correct Google account in YouTube.
- You’re using the latest YouTube app version (Android or iOS) or an updated browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge).
- You know where your controls appear: Home page cards/rows usually contain feedback options for suggested videos.
Quick checks
- Look at Home for new callouts or additional buttons tied to suggested rows.
- Confirm history is enabled or paused depending on your goal. Disabling history can reduce tailoring but won’t delete past signals unless you clear history.
- Check multiple devices if the feature appears on one but not another. Experiments roll out unevenly.
How to Control Suggested Content on the New Home Page
Most “new Home” recommendation control comes down to two layers: (1) per-item feedback and (2) personalization inputs (history and interests). Use both for fastest results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRemove or hide individual recommendations
Start at the source. If you see a suggested video or channel repeatedly, use the row-level or item-level menu to remove it from your Home feed. This tells YouTube you don’t want similar content.
On most UIs, you’ll find actions in a small three-dot menu (⋮) or via a button on the card/row.
Use feedback controls (Not interested / feedback prompts)
When YouTube asks for a reason, choose the closest match. Vague selections can slow down correction. If the choice exists, prefer feedback like:

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Not interested
- Don’t recommend channel (wording may vary)
- Incorrect topic or category-specific feedback (if offered)
If your Home page shows multiple controls, do small, targeted edits first rather than trying to overhaul everything in one pass.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Manage your Watch & Search History
Your Watch history and Search history are major inputs. If you want YouTube to stop learning from certain activity, pause the relevant history.
- Pause Watch History: YouTube stops saving what you watch to your profile.
- Pause Search History: YouTube stops saving what you search.
Pausing doesn’t erase existing data. It mainly prevents future personalization from reinforcing the things you want less of.
Clear history and reset recommendations
If the feed is “stuck” on an outdated phase—like a one-time binge that keeps resurfacing—clearing history can help.
Clear only what you need. Clearing all history is more disruptive but can be effective when your recommendations drift far from your current interests.

Some accounts have controls like “Manage your interests” (or similar interest settings). When available, use them to mark topics you want less of. If the new Home page test surfaces topic controls, it’s usually tied to these interest signals.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
After changes, expect some lag. Recommendation systems retrain over time; changes are usually noticeable within days, not minutes.
Platform Guide: Where the Controls Live
Below are practical paths to the settings and feedback controls you’ll likely need. The exact labels can differ slightly across updates, but the menu structure is consistent.
Web (YouTube in a browser)
Web is often the fastest way to reach history and personalization controls with fewer popups.
- Open YouTube and sign in.
- Go to your profile icon (top-right) → Manage your Google Account.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Find YouTube history and use:
- Select Pause for Watch history and/or Search history.
- To erase existing signals, use Clear watch history and/or Clear search history.
- Return to Home and use per-item feedback (three-dot menu on a suggested card/row) to remove specific suggestions.
Android (YouTube app)
On Android, you’ll typically use the Home feed menus for item-level feedback, then adjust history from settings.
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap History & privacy.
- Under Watch history, choose Pause.
- Under Search history, choose Pause.
- To erase past signals, use Clear watch history and/or Clear search history.
- On Home, long-press or tap the three-dot (⋮) menu on a suggested video and choose Not interested or a similar feedback option.
iPhone and iPad (YouTube app)
On iPhone and iPad, the structure mirrors Android: Home controls for suggestions, then history & privacy in Settings.
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile icon (top-right).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap History & privacy.
- Choose Pause watch history (and optionally Pause search history).
- Use Clear watch history and/or Clear search history if the feed is “stuck.”
- On Home, open the suggested item menu (three-dot) and select Not interested or the closest option.
What to Do If the New Home Controls Don’t Show Up
YouTube experiments aren’t universal. If you don’t see the new Home options, you can still control suggestions using history and feedback actions.

Common reasons the test isn’t visible
- Rollout timing: experiments land gradually by region and account cohort.
- Device differences: you may get the test on web but not iOS (or vice versa).
- Account state: personalization may be limited if history is paused or settings are changed.
- App version: older YouTube app builds may not include the UI.
What to try
- Update the YouTube app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign out and back in (only if you’re comfortable), then revisit Home.
- Try a different browser on web, or disable aggressive ad-blocking/privacy extensions.
- If you use iCloud Keychain or similar password managers, confirm the account switch didn’t silently occur.
Troubleshooting When Recommendations Still Don’t Improve
If you’ve used “Not interested” and adjusted history but the same irrelevant content keeps appearing, it’s usually one of these issues: feedback isn’t matching the right category, signals are being reinforced elsewhere, or the system needs time.

- Confirm you’re applying feedback to suggestions, not subscriptions. If it’s from a channel you actually follow, your Home will still show some of it.
- Use stronger feedback when available. If there’s an option to hide a channel/topic more directly, use that instead of only dismissing a single video.
- Pause or clear history for the problematic period. If the bad suggestions started after a specific binge, clearing the watch history often helps more than repeated dismissals.
- Reduce competing signals. If you search for a topic unintentionally (or let autoplay run through it), you may be re-seeding recommendations.
- Check Likes and Watch Later. Liked content can pull your recommendations toward a theme. (If you liked a lot of unrelated videos, correct that signal too.)
- Give it time. Recommendation changes typically need several days of new behavior.
Edge cases that confuse people
- Incognito or “history paused” misunderstanding: If you’re using private browsing, it won’t prevent YouTube from learning from your signed-in session. The controlling factor is what YouTube records under that account.
- Multiple accounts: Recommendations follow the active account. A simple sign-in mismatch can make it look like controls aren’t working.
- Shared devices: If other people watch logged-in on your device/browser, your feed can drift quickly.
Privacy and Recommendation Controls: How They Work Together
You have two different goals you might be mixing together:
- Stop future learning (pause history).
- Remove past learning (clear history or reset interest signals).
They’re related, but not the same. If you pause history without clearing, your recommendations can still reflect older watch behavior. If you clear history but keep watching aggressively in the new direction, you should start seeing improvements after the system re-learns your updated preferences.

- Only tapping dismiss once. A single action might adjust a single instance; repeated feedback across similar suggestions is what trains the model.
- Choosing the wrong reason when feedback prompts appear. Pick the option that best reflects why you don’t want it.
- Over-correcting everything (clearing all history) when only one topic is drifting. Targeted fixes work better and keep your feed usable.
- Letting autoplay run after you’ve paused or changed interests. Autoplay creates new watch signals—fast.
Alternatives: Reduce “Suggested” Exposure Without Disabling Everything
If you don’t want to pause personalization entirely, there are still practical ways to reduce irrelevant suggestions.
Use subscription-first browsing
Spend most of your time in your subscription feed and channels you follow. This shifts your attention to videos you intentionally care about, which becomes a new training signal.
Watch and search intentionally
When you do want something outside your current interests, finish that session deliberately and then return to your usual channels. Avoid bouncing around between unrelated topics for long stretches.

FAQs
Why did my YouTube Home page change again after I adjusted settings?
Home page experiments can re-assign experiments and refresh UI elements. Also, recommendation systems respond to new behavior over time, so the feed can shift even if you keep settings unchanged.
Will pausing Watch history stop suggested videos immediately?
Not always. Pausing prevents new watch signals from being saved, but your Home feed can still reflect prior signals already stored for your account. Clear history if you want faster reset of older patterns.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does clearing Watch history delete subscriptions or channel activity?
No. Clearing YouTube history affects recommendation inputs, not your subscriptions, uploaded content, or general account ownership.
Can I control suggestions for only one type of content (like shorts or gaming)?
If your new Home page test includes topic controls, yes. Otherwise, use per-item feedback repeatedly for the category that’s bothering you, and consider clearing history only for the timeframe connected to that content.
What if the “Not interested” option isn’t available on my Home page?
Use the nearest equivalent feedback action on the card/row menu. If nothing similar exists, go to History & privacy and pause or clear history, then restart your browsing pattern for a few days to give recommendations a chance to correct.
Bottom Line
The new YouTube Home page test is about giving you more leverage over what shows up in your suggested feed. The fastest results come from combining per-video feedback (like Not interested) with history controls (pause or clear watch/search history).
If you don’t see the new UI yet, you can still steer recommendations today using the same core inputs: feedback, watch/search history, and consistent viewing behavior.
