If your YouTube stream stopped after an OBS Studio update, first identify whether OBS crashed, lost its connection, or stayed connected while YouTube rejected the stream. The timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem. Preserve your settings, capture the exact error, then isolate third-party plugins and verify the stream key, encoder settings, and network in that order.
Identify what “stops” means before changing settings
Note the OBS version and operating system, when you updated, and what happens when the stream fails. Check both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room; they may report different parts of the failure.

- OBS crashes or will not start: investigate startup errors and third-party plugins before changing streaming settings.
- OBS stays open but disconnects or reports dropped frames: investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether your upload capacity can sustain the configured bitrate.
- OBS appears connected but YouTube will not start or reports an ingest, authentication, or stream-key error: verify the selected service, stream URL, and current key.
- YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health: check encoder errors, CPU load, and the stream’s audio and video before assuming the update is responsible.
Keep your existing OBS profile and settings intact while diagnosing. Record the exact error and, if you seek help, include an OBS log without exposing your stream key. OBS recommends testing before an event and providing a log when requesting support; an update followed by a failure is not, by itself, proof of cause. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Test whether a third-party plugin is involved
OBS safe mode is a reversible way to check whether a third-party component is contributing to the problem. It disables third-party plugins, scripts, and WebSockets for that launch; it does not uninstall them.

- Close OBS.
- Launch OBS with the
--safe-modeparameter. See OBS’s Launch Parameters page for how to use launch options on your system. - Repeat the same action that produced the failure, such as opening OBS or starting the stream, and note whether the symptom changes.
- If it does, close OBS and re-enable or test third-party components selectively. Check each developer’s compatibility information for your operating system, CPU architecture, and installed OBS version.
A change in safe mode points toward a third-party component, but does not identify it on its own. Do not remove plugins indiscriminately: test one at a time and note which change affects the result. OBS documents that plugin compatibility can depend on platform, architecture, and OBS version in its Plugins Guide.
Windows plugin-location change for newer OBS versions
Plugin-loading guidance is version-sensitive. OBS’s page dated 2026-09-21 says new plugin handling begins with OBS Studio 33.0, flags legacy plugins, and says the Program Files legacy location will not load in OBS Studio 34.0 onwards. This guidance is specifically for Windows; do not apply those paths or version notes to macOS or Linux. Check the Legacy Plugin Locations page against your installed version before moving or reinstalling a plugin.

Verify YouTube service, stream URL, key, and output mode
If OBS fails to start the stream or YouTube reports an authentication or ingest problem, check the connection details before changing your bitrate.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, find the stream’s current stream key and URL. YouTube explains their roles and key-reset process in Manage live stream settings.
- In OBS, confirm you selected the intended YouTube service and protocol, and that the server URL and stream key match the current Live Control Room details. If you reset the key, update OBS with the new one.
- Check OBS’s output mode and selected encoder, along with bitrate, resolution, and frame rate. Advanced output mode provides independent stream and recording controls; a recording setting does not necessarily describe your live output.
- Compare the live encoder settings with YouTube’s current recommendations and your connection’s stable upload capacity. YouTube’s settings are service-level guidance, not a universal OBS preset.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, logs, or public support posts. If you need to share a log, remove or obscure the key first. For starting errors and encoder checks, see YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Compare encoder settings with YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds). Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following H.264 examples are individual rows from YouTube’s current table, accessed in 2026—not general recommendations for every stream.
| Output format | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use the row for your actual codec and output format in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table; do not transfer an H.264 figure to a different codec or frame rate. A bitrate that meets YouTube’s recommendation can still fail if your connection cannot sustain it consistently.

Check encoder health and the outbound connection
When OBS remains open, inspect its encoder errors and CPU load, and check the stream’s look and sound in the encoder. If available, review a local recording of the encoded output. A healthy local archive does not prove YouTube is receiving it correctly: YouTube advises testing the outbound connection when the encoder output appears healthy.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If OBS reports dropped frames, its documentation identifies the usual issue as an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection unable to sustain the configured bitrate. Try these diagnostics one at a time:
- Try another ingest server, if one is available in your OBS service settings.
- Lower the video bitrate to a level your stable upload capacity can sustain.
- Check whether a VPN, security tool, network-optimization application, or network driver is affecting the connection.
- If Wi-Fi instability is plausible, test with wired Ethernet. A cable will not fix a plugin conflict, an incorrect key, or unsuitable encoder settings.
These are diagnostic avenues, not guaranteed fixes. OBS says dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide has additional checks.
Retest safely and change one variable at a time
- Make a private or unlisted test stream, or test a scheduled stream before relying on the setup for an event.
- Use audio and motion similar to the real broadcast; a static desktop may not reveal the same encoder load or connection demands.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health alongside OBS’s connection and encoder status.
- Write down the single setting or component you changed and whether the problem returned. If a change makes no difference, restore it before testing the next cause.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is that your computer has to stay on to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running, StreamNeo is an alternative—not a repair for OBS or a way to broadcast from a live camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
