To find where a stall begins, compare YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages with FFmpeg’s output, then check the source, encoder, outbound bandwidth and network path in that order. The available details do not establish that Chennai routing is the cause; the VPS provider, ingest destination, command, bitrate and health errors all matter.
1. Check whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream
Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and note the stream-health indicator and the timestamp and wording of each message. YouTube checks the stream submitted to it and displays errors beside the health indicator. Red errors are critical and can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors can degrade quality. Use the message YouTube actually reports to choose what to investigate next, rather than treating an active FFmpeg process as proof of successful ingest.

YouTube’s encoder guidance says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance explains the settings to check; its live streaming error messages page describes common errors.
Record the timing
Write down when the viewer-facing stall began, when the health indicator changed, and when each error appeared. Compare those times with FFmpeg’s stderr output and any available CPU, bandwidth or provider-network graphs. A timestamped sequence is more useful than a general report that the stream “sometimes freezes.”

2. Decide whether the problem is at the source or beyond the encoder
If the encoder preview or local recording is bad
Check whether the preview looks and sounds correct. If FFmpeg is configured to save a local archive, confirm that the file is being written and continues to grow, then inspect a segment from the affected period. Review FFmpeg’s stderr for errors and check VPS CPU load around the same time. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking local output and the encoder when the stream itself appears unhealthy.
A process can remain alive while its input, encoding work or connection to YouTube is not producing usable media. Preserve the actual command line, FFmpeg version/build information and relevant stderr rather than guessing at a fix from the process state alone.

If local output looks and sounds healthy
Turn to the outbound connection from the VPS. YouTube’s troubleshooting sequence points toward the internet connection when the encoder output looks healthy but the stream has problems. Check measured upload capacity and, if your host provides them, network graphs for the same interval. A general download-speed result does not answer whether the VPS can sustain the required upload.
3. Compare sustained upload capacity with the stream settings
YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Include all outgoing streams in the total: a primary stream plus a backup stream both consume upload capacity. For an intermittent stall, compare measurements taken near the failure with measurements during normal operation; a single result may not reflect the connection at the time of the incident. These are configuration recommendations, not statistics about failures in Chennai. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps and recommends a keyframe every two seconds, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Apply the values for your actual resolution, frame rate, codec and protocol rather than copying a bitrate recommendation to a different configuration. YouTube does not state a publication year for these recommendations on the cited material; they were verified in 2026.
Check the actual output against Live Control Room
- Confirm the selected protocol, codec, resolution and frame rate match the settings configured in the encoder and the stream configuration shown in Live Control Room.
- Compare the actual bitrate with the configured bitrate and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, counting any backup stream.
- Check keyframe frequency against YouTube’s guidance for the chosen protocol.
- Review YouTube’s error message for problems such as unsupported format, incorrect bitrate, unexpected audio/video stream count, resolution or keyframe frequency.
- Keep the stream key private. If you change stream configuration, verify the encoder is using the intended key and settings without sharing the key in logs or support tickets.
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS settings for H.264, H.265 and AV1, along with CBR guidance; the exact requirements depend on the selected protocol and configuration. Use the current encoder settings guidance and the error reported for your stream rather than switching codecs or protocols speculatively.

4. Investigate the VPS network path without overreading traceroute
If the encoder output is healthy and measured upload capacity appears sufficient, compare repeated connectivity and route measurements from the VPS toward the actual configured YouTube ingest destination, if you can identify it. Take samples during normal operation and during a stall, and timestamp them so they can be compared with stream-health messages.
A route trace is evidence about probe paths and replies, not a definitive test of every media packet’s forwarding. Traceroute uses TTL-limited probes to elicit responses from intermediate hops. Firewalls may filter probes, and routers may rate-limit ICMP replies, so missing hops or asterisks alone do not prove that the stream path is broken. TCP-based tracing can help when UDP or ICMP probes are filtered, but choose an appropriate destination and port. See the traceroute(8) manual.

Do not infer that Chennai itself is responsible from the city name in the VPS description. The cause could be at the source, encoder configuration, sustained outbound capacity or a provider path; this report does not identify the provider, route, ingest hostname or measured bitrate needed to distinguish them.

5. Change protocol or settings only when evidence points there
Do not switch protocols simply because the player stalls. YouTube describes HLS as segment-based and higher latency than RTMP, with separate requirements that include HTTPS, TS segments and a rolling playlist. A switch makes sense only if the encoder and YouTube stream configuration are set up for that protocol and the observed error supports the change. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
6. Build an incident record before contacting the VPS provider
When the evidence points toward a network or provider issue, send a concise, time-correlated record rather than asking the provider to investigate “a YouTube stall” without details. YouTube does not prescribe this as an incident form; it is a practical bundle based on its troubleshooting steps and the limits of route traces.
- Live Control Room health changes and exact error text, with timestamps.
- FFmpeg stderr around the same times, plus the command and FFmpeg build/version, with the stream key removed.
- Whether preview or local output remained healthy during the stall.
- CPU load and measured outbound bandwidth near the incident; include primary and backup stream bitrates.
- Repeated route traces toward the configured ingest destination, noting the time and probe method.

7. Common symptoms and what they point to
