If a YouTube stream key works on your computer but fails from a Linux VPS, the key alone does not prove that the VPS can reach YouTube’s ingest server. Check the current key and selected stream, the RTMPS endpoint, outbound TCP access on port 443, and then encoder output and bitrate—in that order. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and its encoder guidance specifies port 443 for the connection.
Start by identifying what “fails” means
Separate a connection or SSL error at startup from a stream that connects but drops frames or disconnects. They point to different parts of the setup. The exact cause cannot be determined without the VPS provider, encoder, current stream URL, error text, and relevant logs.

Check the stream key and selected stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and copy the current stream key. If the encoder reports an error at startup, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends obtaining a new key and updating the third-party encoder.
- In the encoder running on the VPS, replace the saved key with the current one and verify that the encoder is pointed at the intended live stream.
- Keep the key private. Do not include it in screenshots, public logs, support posts, or commands that may be recorded in shell history.
A key that works locally establishes that it can work with that local setup; it does not test the VPS network, its selected endpoint, or the VPS encoder configuration. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Verify the RTMPS URL, protocol, and TLS hostname
- Use the ingest URL shown for the intended stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Do not assume a URL saved on another machine is still the right one.
- Confirm the protocol is
rtmps, notrtmp. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. - If the error mentions SSL or a timeout, check that the URL is correct, that the encoder supports RTMPS, and that the connection uses port 443 where required.
- If you use a custom RTMPS client rather than a standard encoder, make sure its TLS SNI hostname is the ingestion hostname. Google’s encoder-facing documentation says the hostname is required for SNI authentication.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance covers the URL, protocol, and connection errors. Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation specifies port 443 and the hostname requirement for TLS SNI.

Test outbound access from the VPS
Run network checks on the VPS itself, preferably while attempting a stream. Test outbound TCP connectivity to the exact current RTMPS ingest host on port 443. Use the hostname from the current YouTube stream setup; do not substitute a guessed or stale address.
- Check whether the VPS can resolve the ingest hostname and establish an outbound TCP connection to it on port 443.
- If the connection fails, inspect the Linux host’s outbound firewall rules.
- Also inspect the VPS provider’s cloud firewall or security policy. A provider-level rule is separate from the operating-system firewall, so allowing traffic in only one place may not be enough.
- After any policy change, repeat the connectivity test from the VPS and then retry the encoder.
Ubuntu documents outbound destination-port matching in its nftables guidance. DigitalOcean’s firewall documentation describes provider-level outbound rules by port and destination. These are examples of distinct firewall layers; check the controls and policy for your own Linux distribution and VPS provider.

A successful TCP port test only establishes reachability at that layer. It does not prove the key, TLS setup, or complete ingest path is valid. This is an outbound connection from the VPS to YouTube: do not open inbound port 1935 just because an RTMP guide for hosting your own ingest server mentions it. The cited YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance calls for a connection to port 443.
If it connects but drops frames, investigate bitrate and stability
A stream that reaches YouTube but drops frames or disconnects has a different symptom from a connection that never starts. YouTube advises checking the outbound Internet connection; OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the encoder and the remote ingest server.

- Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the stable outbound capacity available to the VPS, not just a brief peak speed.
- Review the encoder’s connection or dropped-frame logs while streaming.
- If reducing the bitrate makes the connection stable, the VPS route or available bandwidth may not reliably sustain the previous setting.

Validate encoder output and YouTube’s ingest status
- Update the encoder and inspect its local preview and logs for startup, protocol, or output errors.
- Check YouTube’s ingest dashboard for the stream’s status and any reported format or connection error.
- Compare protocol, codec, keyframe, bitrate, resolution, and other relevant output settings with YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, which recommends RTMPS.
- If the encoder output looks healthy but the error persists, make a controlled test from another network or with another encoder. Change one factor at a time so the result helps isolate whether the issue follows the VPS route, the encoder, or the stream configuration.
