Put the URL in the encoder’s Server or RTMP Server field and the key in its Stream Key field. They work together; neither normally replaces the other.
Stream URL and stream key: the difference
| Value | What it does | Typical encoder field |
|---|---|---|
| Stream URL | Identifies the YouTube ingestion server destination to which your encoder sends audio and video. | Server, URL, or RTMP Server |
| Stream key | Acts as a credential that lets YouTube accept and associate the incoming feed with the selected stream. | Stream Key |
YouTube Help uses the analogy that stream keys are like a stream’s “password and address.” For setup, keep the roles distinct: the URL is the destination; the key is the credential. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Where to enter each value in an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select an existing stream or create one.
- Copy the Stream URL shown for that stream into your encoder’s Server, URL, or RTMP Server field.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder’s Stream Key field.
- Start the encoder and check that YouTube receives the feed. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live when you are ready.
If your encoder offers a YouTube streaming preset, YouTube recommends choosing it. Depending on the encoder, you may still need to enter the key. Field labels and workflows vary by encoder, so follow its instructions for the selected YouTube protocol. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Do you need both the URL and the key?
In the common RTMP or RTMPS workflow, yes: provide the server URL and the stream key in their respective fields. RTMPS encrypts RTMP traffic, but the setup still uses both values. In YouTube’s HLS workflow, the key is included in the URL, so a separate Stream Key field may not apply in the same way. Check that you selected the intended protocol and do not paste the key a second time unless the encoder’s instructions require it.

YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain how to select the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and copy the key into the encoder. Its HLS instructions note that the key is already part of the URL. RTMPS setup · HLS setup
Keep the stream key private
Treat the key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to send a feed using your stream configuration. If you think it has been exposed, reset it from the Stream tab in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in your encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a stream key, so ask one of them if you do not have that permission.

Troubleshoot a failed encoder connection
- The encoder connects to the wrong destination: confirm that the Stream URL is in the Server or URL field, not the Stream Key field, and that it belongs to the stream you selected in Live Control Room.
- The key may be wrong or compromised: reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
- A third-party encoder reports a startup error: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new stream key and entering it in the encoder. This is a recommended troubleshooting step, not proof that every startup error is caused by the key. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
- Your software signs in to YouTube instead of using a key: YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team for help.
- You selected HLS: check the HLS-specific field instructions; its URL already contains the key, unlike the usual separate-field RTMP/RTMPS setup.
