YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. Its English-language live encoder guidance lists ingest up to 60 fps and codec-specific bitrate recommendations—not one universal bitrate target.
How YouTube handles live ingest settings
In Live Control Room, you configure resolution, frame rate and bitrate in your encoder. YouTube detects the encoder settings automatically by default, then transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers. Your ingest resolution therefore does not guarantee that every viewer will see that exact resolution; their available playback formats can differ.
You can choose resolution manually by using a custom stream key and setting the resolution options in Live Control Room. Unless you need that manual control, YouTube recommends leaving detection automatic.
Recommended live ingest bitrate by resolution and frame rate
The following values are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in its English-language live encoder guidance, retrieved October 3, 2026. They are recommendations, not hard minimums, and differ by codec. Do not substitute YouTube’s upload-encoding recommendations: those apply to uploaded files, not live ingest.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Use the row matching both your chosen resolution and frame rate, and the column matching your encoder’s video codec. A higher resolution or frame rate can require more upload capacity; if the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce the setting rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak. YouTube recommends checking upload speed with a speed test. Leave practical headroom for connection variation; YouTube does not specify a numeric headroom percentage in this guidance.
Which resolution and frame rate should you choose?
1080p at 30 fps
This setting is a reasonable starting point when a stable 1080p picture matters more than smoother motion. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264. Confirm that your encoder and sustained upload can deliver the selected codec and bitrate reliably.

1080p at 60 fps
Choose 60 fps when smoother motion is important and your encoder and connection can maintain the higher target. YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60.
1440p or 4K
Use these resolutions only if the source, encoder and sustained upload support them. Their bitrate recommendations rise substantially with resolution and frame rate. For 2160p (4K), YouTube says the stream is optimized for quality at normal latency; the low-latency improvement option is not available.

720p and below
Lower resolutions reduce the recommended ingest bitrate and can be more practical on constrained connections. YouTube’s listed recommendations are 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264 at either 720p30 or 720p60; 480p30 is 3 Mbps or 4 Mbps, respectively, and 360p30 has the same listed values.
Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP; use it if your encoder supports it.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Match the bitrate recommendation to the codec you actually send.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s listed ingest limit is up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s guidance says 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
Advanced video parameters
YouTube’s documented recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. Treat these as recommendations rather than mandatory settings for every encoder. For HDR, the guidance lists H.265 (HEVC) and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR. For AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns.

Set up and test a continuous stream
- Check your sustained upload capacity. Run a speed test as YouTube recommends. Select a bitrate your connection can sustain, with practical headroom for variation rather than treating the measured peak as a guaranteed continuous rate.
- Choose automatic or manual detection. Leave resolution and frame-rate detection automatic unless you need to control them manually. For manual selection, use a custom stream key and set the resolution options in Live Control Room.
- Configure the encoder. Set the resolution, frame rate and codec, then use the matching bitrate recommendation above. Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval no longer than 4 seconds.
- Use RTMPS if supported. YouTube recommends the secure protocol. Its help guidance explains how to reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room; the encoder must support RTMPS.
- Test the actual program. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include representative audio and movement so a static test does not conceal problems that appear during the real program.
- Monitor the stream while live. YouTube Help says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Respond to warnings rather than assuming a stream that has started will remain stable.
- Set latency expectations. If sending 2160p (4K), plan for normal latency; YouTube does not offer the low-latency improvement option for that resolution.
Troubleshooting common live-ingest problems
Stream health warnings or an unstable stream
Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, not just reach it briefly. If it cannot, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a combination your connection and encoder can maintain, then test again.
Manual resolution selection is unavailable
YouTube’s manual resolution selection uses a custom stream key. Switch to a custom key in Live Control Room and configure its resolution options; otherwise, keep automatic detection enabled.

The stream looks different for viewers
YouTube transcodes live ingest into multiple viewer formats. The encoder’s ingest resolution is not a guarantee that each viewer will receive that exact resolution.
Encoder does not connect over RTMPS
Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and that you are using the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room. If it does not support RTMPS, YouTube lists RTMP as an ingest protocol option.
Keyframe or bitrate settings do not match guidance
Verify the encoder is using CBR, the keyframe interval is 2 seconds (and no more than 4), and the bitrate matches the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. A bitrate copied from a YouTube upload-encoding table is not the live-ingest recommendation.
