If you can’t see or reset your YouTube stream key after a channel permissions change, check your role first: Viewers can’t see the key, Editors can’t reset it, and only an Owner or Manager can reset it. A permissions change does not necessarily invalidate a key already saved in your encoder. Have an authorized person check the key in YouTube Studio, then verify the encoder’s key and stream URL.
First, determine whether this is a permissions problem
YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Treat the key as a credential: don’t post it publicly or share it outside the people who need it to configure the encoder. The relevant capabilities depend on the channel’s access system and assigned role.

To check the role, open YouTube Studio and go to Settings → Permissions. Confirm you are looking at the channel that owns the stream. If you are a Viewer, not seeing the key is expected; if you are an Editor, ask an Owner or Manager to reset it. A permissions change can explain why you can no longer retrieve or rotate the key, but it does not by itself establish that YouTube invalidated a key already stored in an encoder.

Retrieve or reset the key with an authorized account
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with an Owner or Manager account for the correct channel.
- Select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab and find Stream key.
- Copy the current key if you only need to update the encoder. If the key needs replacement, select Reset beside it. YouTube says an Owner or Manager is required to reset a key.
- Give the replacement key to the encoder operator through a secure channel, then update the encoder before starting it.
Resetting replaces the credential the encoder must use. Don’t assume that an earlier key was revoked merely because someone’s channel role changed; check the current key in Live Control Room and test the encoder configuration.
Update the encoder’s key and stream URL
YouTube’s encoder setup uses two separate values: the stream URL (often called the server or RTMP URL) and the stream key. A current key paired with the wrong server URL can still fail to connect.

- In Live Control Room, copy the displayed stream URL and key.
- In the encoder, paste the URL into its server, stream URL, or RTMP field, and paste the key into its Stream Key field. Replace stale saved values rather than adding spaces or extra characters.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming-stream preview in Live Control Room.
- Once the preview appears and the feed is correct, select Go live in Live Control Room if you want to publish the stream. Connecting the encoder and publishing the live stream are separate steps.

Check RTMPS separately if the encoder reports a transport or SSL error
RTMPS is a secure transport option, not a replacement for the stream key. If you use it, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s guidance identifies port 443 as a workaround to check for an SSL error; use the URL and port format supported by your encoder rather than changing the key to address a transport problem. If Studio still won’t let the channel go live
Livestream eligibility is a separate issue from key permissions. YouTube lists channel verification and no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days among its requirements. Check those conditions if the channel cannot go live even after the encoder connects; a role change is not evidence that the channel has a livestream restriction.
