Reset your existing YouTube stream key if it may have been exposed or you need to replace the key attached to your current stream settings. Create a separate custom key when you want another reusable key or a different configuration without replacing the existing one. After a reset, update the encoder with the replacement key.
Reset or create a custom key?

YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat them as credentials: do not share them publicly. The reset and custom-key options solve different problems: resetting replaces the key attached to the current settings, while creating a custom key adds a separate selectable key. How to reset the key for your current settings
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and locate the stream key.
- Select Reset beside the hidden key, then copy the generated replacement.
- In your encoder, replace the saved value in its Stream Key field. The encoder also uses the YouTube Live server URL; do not confuse that URL with the key.
- Check any other saved encoder profiles or configurations that use the old key, update them, and test the connection before going live.
Reset access is limited to channel owners and managers. Editors and viewers cannot reset the key; if the option is unavailable, check your channel role. YouTube notes that previous stream settings may load with their previous key, so an unchanged key may not need to be entered again—but after a reset, use the newly generated value. How to create a separate custom key
- In YouTube Studio, select Go Live and open the stream key selector in Live Control Room.
- Choose Create new stream key.
- Set the preferred settings, including the stream protocol where applicable, and create the key.
- Select the new key for the stream you are setting up, then enter that key in the encoder’s Stream Key field.
Use this route to add a selectable, reusable key or a distinct configuration. It does not replace the key currently attached to your existing settings. If the setup is for HLS, choose HLS as the protocol and use its corresponding ingestion URL; see YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Common setup mistakes and fixes
- The encoder still uses the old key: after resetting, replace the key in the active encoder profile and in any other saved configuration that relies on it.
- The selected key and encoder key do not match: check which key is selected in Live Control Room, then copy that exact key into the encoder.
- You cannot see Reset: confirm you are signed in with channel-owner or manager permissions.
- The app does not have a stream-key field: if it connects through account login, contact the app’s support team rather than looking for a key to reset.
- You are creating a new scheduled stream, not a key: YouTube treats stream-session setup and stream-key creation separately. Reusing prior stream settings can retain the prior key; creating a new scheduled stream does not by itself mean you created a new key.
YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions for third-party encoder errors recommend getting a new key and updating the encoder. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
