Then check whether the problem is in Studio, the browser session, or the encoder. YouTube’s help pages explain how to manage and use stream keys, but do not identify a browser-specific cause or confirmed browser fix for a key that fails to persist.
First, identify what is failing
A stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send video to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage it in Live Control Room, then enter the current key in the encoder that sends the feed. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Pinpoint the failed action before changing settings: are you unable to select or save a key in Studio, copy it, or get the encoder to accept it? These symptoms occur at different points in the workflow and call for different checks.

- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, select the intended stream, and open Stream.
- Inspect the Stream key controls. Make sure the key belongs to the stream you are configuring. Use Studio’s copy or selection controls rather than assuming an older key is still the right one. YouTube also allows a custom key to be created for reuse. Manage live stream settings.
- If you need to reset a key, check your channel role. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset one; editors and viewers cannot. If Reset is unavailable, ask an owner or manager to do it.
- If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and copy the newly generated key. Resetting rotates the credential: update every encoder that uses the old key.
Update the matching encoder destination
If the key is visible in Studio but the encoder will not start, copy the current key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder’s settings for the matching YouTube destination. YouTube recommends retrieving the key from Live Control Room and updating it in the third-party encoder when a key-related startup error occurs. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream errors.

Some software signs in directly to YouTube instead of using a stream key. If that describes your setup, YouTube advises contacting the software’s support team; replacing a key will not address a direct sign-in integration problem.
Try browser checks as isolation steps
Browser troubleshooting may help you determine whether the issue follows a particular browser session, but YouTube’s general browser guidance is not a documented repair for Live Control Room stream-key saving.

- Reload Studio, then close and reopen it. If possible, sign out and back in.
- Update and restart your browser, close surplus tabs, and try Chrome or another supported browser.
- Restart the device. If the symptom continues, test whether clearing cache and cookies changes it; this may sign you out of sites. YouTube mentions cache and cookie clearing for general video errors, not specifically for keys that fail to save. YouTube Help: Fix video streaming issues.
Keep track of what changes after each check. A browser step is useful evidence if the symptom consistently appears in one session and not another, but it does not establish why the key failed to persist.

Test the feed before going live
- Start sending from the encoder with the current key.
- Wait for the video preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Review stream health there before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends testing the stream and reviewing its health before an event. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Stream health and troubleshooting.
A preview confirms the encoder feed is reaching YouTube; it is a more useful end-to-end check than the key field alone.

If it still does not work
Record the exact point of failure and use it to choose where to seek help:
- Studio cannot select, show, or reset the key: note the selected stream and your channel role, then seek YouTube Help. For a reset-permission issue, ask an owner or manager.
- You cannot copy or paste the current key: note whether the failure occurs in Studio, the browser, or the encoder, and include your browser name and version.
- The encoder rejects the key or does not connect: verify that you pasted the current key into the correct YouTube destination. If the software uses direct account sign-in, contact its support team.
- The encoder sends video but no preview appears: check the encoder’s connection and Live Control Room stream health, then consult the encoder’s support if its feed is not reaching YouTube.
For live-stream access problems, keep eligibility separate from key saving: YouTube lists channel verification and having no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days among its requirements. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
