If YouTube rejects an FFmpeg stream key, first verify that FFmpeg is publishing to the exact Stream URL and using the current Stream key for the intended live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A key alone is not a complete destination: the output URL, RTMP or RTMPS protocol, and FFmpeg publishing format must also match. A timeout or TLS error is not, by itself, proof that the key is wrong.
Check the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to use. Copy both its current Stream URL and Stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address”; keep the key private and treat it as a credential. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

- Make sure the key belongs to this live stream, not another scheduled stream or an older configuration.
- If the key may be stale or exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace the stored value in every encoder instance that uses it. Resetting makes the old credential unsuitable for this configuration.
- Do not share an unredacted key in a screenshot, support post, terminal transcript, or public log. If it has been exposed, reset it.
Use the URL displayed for the selected stream rather than assuming a remembered or default server address will work. The server URL and key are distinct settings; copying only the key does not tell FFmpeg which endpoint to publish to.
Build FFmpeg’s output destination correctly
FFmpeg’s RTMP URL structure can include a server, optional port, application path, instance, and playpath. A malformed or mismatched output destination can resemble an authentication failure. FFmpeg’s protocol manual documents the syntax as rtmp://[username:password@]server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath] and shows publishing with the flv muxer. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

ffmpeg -re -i input-file -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_OR_RTMPS_OUTPUT_URL_FROM_YOUTUBE'
This is a command shape, not a ready-to-run command: replace the placeholder with the URL and key arrangement required by the selected YouTube stream. Do not paste a real key into a published command. The output destination belongs after the input and output options; placing a key by itself in the wrong argument position will not configure publishing.
- Check for accidental spaces, extra slashes, missing path components, or a key attached to the wrong part of the URL.
- Include an appropriate output muxer such as
-f flvfor the RTMP publishing form shown in FFmpeg’s documentation. - Do not assume the same output URL works for every stream or protocol. Compare the final argument with the exact server URL YouTube displays.
The example assumes a build and input that support the chosen codecs and protocol; it has not been validated for every operating system, FFmpeg build, or account configuration. FFmpeg’s available protocols depend on how the program was built.

Tell RTMP and RTMPS errors apart
YouTube supports RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL and is recommended for encrypted ingestion. The RTMPS URL may need to be exposed in the Live Control Room; the regular RTMP URL may be shown by default. Use the RTMPS address supplied for the stream instead of changing only the scheme on a remembered RTMP URL. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the protocol options.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Error pattern | What to check |
|---|---|
| TLS or certificate error | Confirm that the scheme and server are the RTMPS values supplied by YouTube. If the URL is otherwise correct, YouTube suggests trying port 443. |
| Connection timeout | Recheck the endpoint and protocol, verify that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS if selected, and investigate whether the network blocks or cannot reach the destination. |
| Credential rejection after connection | Confirm that the current key belongs to the selected stream; if it may be stale or compromised, reset it and update the encoder. |
YouTube treats SSL errors, timeouts, and key refresh as separate troubleshooting paths. Therefore, changing the key first is not a useful universal response to every connection failure. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Verify FFmpeg protocol support and stream compatibility
If the URL and key look correct, check that the local FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. Run ffmpeg -protocols to inspect protocols available in that build, and check its build configuration if needed. A command that parses successfully does not prove that the client can complete the selected RTMPS/TLS connection.
Once a connection is established, encoder compatibility and stream health are separate from key validity. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and codec; use the current values on the YouTube encoder settings page for the stream you are configuring. These settings can help resolve compatibility or quality problems, but they are not a reason to change a valid key arbitrarily.

Use the error message to choose the next check
“Invalid key” or a rejected stream
- Copy the key again from the intended stream’s Live Control Room.
- Confirm that it has not been reset since it was saved in FFmpeg or another encoder.
- Verify the output URL’s server and path as well as the key; a key in a malformed destination may not reach the expected stream.
- If a fresh key is needed, reset it and update all configurations using the old one. Never post the key while requesting help.
SSL failure or RTMPS timeout
- For an SSL error, verify that both the RTMPS scheme and server match YouTube’s displayed values. Try port 443 if the endpoint is otherwise correct.
- For a timeout, check the endpoint, protocol support in the installed FFmpeg build, and outbound connectivity. A blocked route or unsupported client can prevent the connection before credentials are meaningfully tested.
It connects, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream
- Check codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- Use a current encoder version, inspect FFmpeg’s local output for errors, and check CPU load.
- If the local stream looks and sounds healthy but YouTube does not receive it reliably, test outbound internet connectivity and the selected endpoint.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, testing the outbound connection, and trying another supported encoder when the local output appears healthy but the problem persists.
Give support enough information without exposing the key
If the problem remains, capture the exact FFmpeg error text, the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the protocol scheme, and whether the URL came from the intended Live Control Room stream. State whether you copied or reset the key and whether port 443 was tried for an RTMPS problem. Redact the key itself; redact the host too if sharing it publicly is a concern. Include the network environment for a timeout and whether another supported encoder can reach the same endpoint.
