Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCBR does not guarantee a healthy YouTube stream. It controls how the encoder delivers bitrate; YouTube checks other parts of the incoming stream independently, including the bitrate target, codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, audio, and connection capacity. Start with the exact warning shown beside the Health Indicator in Live Control Room, then verify the matching setting below.
Read the warning before changing settings
YouTube checks the stream it receives. Live Dashboard and Live Control Room display health messages beside the Health Indicator, with timestamps. YouTube describes red errors as critical—they may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems—and yellow errors as moderate, which may degrade quality. A message that remains unresolved continues to appear. YouTube’s live streaming error-message guide lists the conditions behind individual warnings.

Use the wording of the message to choose what to inspect. A keyframe warning points to keyframe timing; a bitrate warning points to the target bitrate or available upload bandwidth; an incorrect-format warning points to the stream format or codec; and a resolution warning points to the actual output dimensions or a mismatch with the selected ingestion configuration. These are useful starting points, not a diagnosis of a stream that has not been inspected.
Verify the encoder settings YouTube checks
Compare the encoder’s actual output—not only its saved profile—with the configuration selected for your YouTube stream. YouTube’s recommendations vary by ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the setting in the relevant stream configuration and the specific warning rather than treating one preset as universal. YouTube’s encoder-settings page gives recommendations by format and video mode.

| Setting | What to check | Relevant YouTube guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Codec and format | Confirm the encoder is sending the format and codec expected by the selected YouTube ingestion configuration. Follow any format-specific error message. | The current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS workflows. Do not assume that every codec is valid for every ingestion setup. |
| Bitrate mode and target | Keep bitrate encoding on CBR, then check the numerical target for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. | For a custom stream key with manual resolution settings, YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60 or 720p30. For AV1/H.265, the corresponding listed rates are 12 Mbps, 10 Mbps, and 6 Mbps. These are recommendations for those modes, not universal targets. |
| Keyframes and GOP | Set the keyframe interval to two seconds if possible; check whether the encoder exposes a closed-GOP setting. | YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, says not to exceed four seconds, and calls for a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. At 30 fps, its error guidance illustrates two-second keyframes as every 60 frames. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Verify the actual outgoing dimensions and frame rate against the selected ingestion configuration. Check that the encoder is not outputting a different mode from the one you intended. | YouTube’s encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps, but a particular ingestion configuration or error message may specify a lower maximum. |
| Audio and stream count | Confirm that the stream contains one audio stream and one video stream, and that the audio codec, sample rate, and channel configuration meet the applicable requirements. | The RTMP/RTMPS settings page lists AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube’s error guidance also identifies missing audio, multiple audio streams, unsupported codecs, and more than two audio channels as possible issues. Follow the specific message for sample-rate or channel requirements. |
| Scan type | Send progressive video rather than interlaced video. | YouTube says interlaced video is not supported for the incoming stream and recommends progressive video. |
The example bitrate values above are YouTube Help recommendations on its current encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026. Consult that page for other resolutions and frame rates and use the value applicable to your selected ingestion settings. A bitrate being set to CBR does not mean that its numeric target is correct.
Check whether your connection can sustain the stream
A correctly configured encoder can still send an unstable stream if outbound bandwidth is insufficient or shared. YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth leave 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate. If you send both primary and backup feeds, account for the total traffic rather than checking only one feed. Other users or devices sharing the connection can also reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Check outbound bandwidth under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, including the other network activity that will be present.
- Compare capacity with the total bitrate you are sending and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If the connection cannot support the selected mode with headroom, lower the resolution or bitrate to a mode your connection can sustain; YouTube advises lowering the chosen resolution when available bandwidth is insufficient.
Test the actual show and monitor health
- Before the event, send a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static screen or silent test may not expose problems that appear in the real program.
- Open Live Control Room or the Live Dashboard and watch the Health Indicator and its timestamped messages while the test is running.
- When a warning appears, note its exact wording and timestamp, then change the setting that corresponds to that message rather than changing unrelated encoder options.
- Run another representative test after a change. Confirm that the warning clears and that the stream remains healthy under the expected network load.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Its live stream settings guide covers stream configuration; make sure the encoder’s chosen stream key and ingestion settings match the stream configured in YouTube.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to inspect first | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bitrate warning or fluctuating delivery | Numeric bitrate target, actual outgoing bitrate, and available upload capacity. | Check that the target matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate for the selected ingestion setup. Test the connection with other network use accounted for; reduce the selected mode if capacity is short. |
| Keyframe or GOP warning | Keyframe interval and GOP configuration. | Use a two-second interval where possible, keep it at or below four seconds, and enable closed GOP if the encoder offers that option. |
| Incorrect format, codec, or resolution warning | Actual encoder output compared with YouTube’s selected ingestion configuration. | Correct the encoder’s format, codec, dimensions, or frame rate to match that configuration. Do not rely on the profile name if the actual output differs. |
| Audio warning, missing audio, or multiple streams | Whether audio is present, the codec and channel configuration, and the number of audio and video streams. | Send a supported audio format and the required sample rate and channel configuration for the specific error. Remove unintended duplicate streams. |
| Interlaced-video warning | Whether the encoder is sending interlaced or progressive output. | Set the outgoing video to progressive scan. |
| Warning persists after a change | Whether the new setting reached the active encoder profile and whether the current outgoing stream actually uses it. | Check the live output and the warning timestamp, then test again. A saved setting alone does not establish that the active stream changed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an encoder setting: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on; it sends your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.

Stream health is separate from permission to use the content
Encoder health checks concern the technical stream YouTube receives; they do not determine whether you have the rights to broadcast the material or whether the content complies with YouTube’s policies. A technically healthy stream is not, by itself, evidence that music, video, or other material is cleared for use. Resolve rights and policy questions separately from bitrate, codec, and connection troubleshooting.
