YouTube Stream Goes Offline After Switching OBS from RTMP to RTMPS: How to Fix It

After switching OBS to RTMPS, verify YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint and current stream key first. Then match the next troubleshooting step to OBS’s error.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your YouTube stream goes offline after you switch OBS from RTMP to RTMPS, first check that OBS is using the RTMPS server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room and the current stream key. RTMPS is not just a different label: it sends RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, so the protocol and server endpoint must match. The title alone does not identify the cause; the exact OBS error is the best clue.

Check the RTMPS URL and stream key first

YouTube says, “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” The URL tells OBS where to send the feed; the stream key lets YouTube accept it. Both values must match the current stream configuration.

  1. Get the RTMPS URL from YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room, go to the stream settings, and reveal or copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube displays the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so make sure you deliberately select the RTMPS URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance.
  2. Set OBS to use the matching endpoint. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the YouTube RTMPS preset if it is available and appropriate for your setup, or enter the full RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube. Check that the URL uses the rtmps scheme and that the endpoint matches the one shown for your stream.
  3. Refresh the stream key if needed. In the same OBS settings, compare the key with the current key in Live Control Room. If you are unsure whether it is current, copy it again from YouTube and replace the value in OBS. Keep the key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. Apply the settings and try the connection again. Check OBS’s status and YouTube’s Live Control Room together. Confirm that OBS is sending and that YouTube is receiving the feed before relying on the stream.

For YouTube’s overview of configuring an encoder with its URL and key, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. For stream URL and key settings, see Manage live stream settings.

Use the OBS error to choose the next check

SSL or certificate error

Recheck that OBS has the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube, not the default RTMP URL. YouTube’s guidance for an SSL error is to verify the URL and try port 443. Use YouTube’s endpoint rather than inventing a server address; apply port 443 only in the URL or port setting as appropriate for the encoder configuration. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting steps explain this check.

Connection timeout

Confirm that the installed OBS version supports RTMPS and that the configured server URL is correct. Then check whether the connection can reach the endpoint over your outbound internet connection. YouTube identifies an incorrect server URL or lack of RTMPS support as checks for a timeout; a timeout alone does not prove the stream key is wrong.

OBS connects, but YouTube does not accept the feed

Copy the current key again from Live Control Room, then inspect the OBS preview and output meters. Confirm the video is moving and the audio is present before diagnosing encoder quality settings. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the encoder and stream key: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

OBS starts, then the stream drops or becomes unstable

Once the endpoint and key are correct, check outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth with about 20% additional room. A connection interruption can break a live stream. Test with a workload similar to the actual stream, including its audio and motion, rather than relying only on a brief idle test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check encoder settings only after the connection details

A protocol switch that immediately leaves a stream offline points first to the server URL, protocol, key, encoder support, or connection—not automatically to video bitrate or keyframes. If those connection checks pass, verify the broader encoder configuration. YouTube currently lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. These settings help configure the stream, but changing them will not correct a mismatched RTMPS endpoint or stale key. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Check the OBS output locally: video should appear, audio should register, and the encoder should not report a startup error.
  • Compare the total streaming bitrate with your actual upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Test before a scheduled broadcast; do not treat a successful short connection as proof that a long stream will remain stable.

Common causes and fixes

What you see Likely check What to do
SSL or certificate error Wrong URL, RTMP endpoint used instead of RTMPS, or port configuration Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room; if the SSL error persists, try port 443 as YouTube advises.
Timeout Endpoint is wrong, RTMPS is unsupported by the installed encoder, or outbound connectivity is blocked or unreliable Verify the YouTube URL, confirm OBS supports RTMPS, and test the outbound connection.
OBS sends, but YouTube rejects or does not show the feed Stream key may be stale, or the encoder output may not be healthy Copy the current key from Live Control Room and inspect video and audio in OBS.
Connection begins but drops under load Upload bandwidth may be insufficient or interrupted Compare total stream bitrate with upload capacity, leave about 20% headroom, and test under a representative workload.
