If your YouTube stream drops frames while OBS uses NVENC, first check which OBS statistic is rising. Network Dropped Frames usually point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; Rendering Lag and Encoding Overloaded point instead to GPU, scene, or encoding pressure. NVENC being selected does not, by itself, mean the encoder is the cause. Fix the branch that matches the symptom before changing settings at random.
Identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”
Open OBS’s Stats window while streaming or running a representative test. The precise labels and layout can vary by OBS version, but distinguish network dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding overload. OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the selected bitrate; it says this is extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the network symptom.

| OBS indicator | What it points to | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Network “Dropped Frames” | Connection to YouTube’s ingest server, route instability, or bitrate exceeding sustainable upload capacity | Lower bitrate, test wired networking, and investigate the network path |
| “Rendering Lag” | OBS cannot composite scenes quickly enough, often because the GPU is busy | Free GPU capacity and simplify scenes |
| “Encoding Overloaded” | OBS cannot encode frames at the selected output workload in time | Reduce output workload and check system/GPU capacity |
More than one counter can rise. Make one change at a time and retest, so you can tell which change helped.
Fix network dropped frames first
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee. Upload capacity fluctuates, and other devices or applications may use bandwidth. YouTube likewise advises choosing quality that the available connection can deliver reliably and testing upload speed. A speed-test result is only a snapshot, so leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the best result you see.

|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For the full current table and platform details, use YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. If your upload is unstable, a lower bitrate or less demanding output may be more reliable than matching a recommended value exactly.

Test the network path
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet if possible. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A wired test helps isolate Wi-Fi; it cannot fix ISP congestion or a problem with YouTube’s ingest route.
- Try another YouTube ingest server or endpoint if your streaming setup offers that choice. Testing a different service can help identify a service-specific issue, but will not repair a problem limited to one service.
- Restart the modem and router, inspect the cable and network connection, and check for other devices or applications consuming upload bandwidth. Faulty cables, network cards, routers, or other network devices can contribute. If you suspect equipment replacement or the issue persists, contact your ISP before buying hardware.
- Temporarily test whether a VPN or security product is interfering. If the test identifies a cause, restore protection and configure an OBS exception as appropriate; do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.
- Check for bundled network-prioritization or “optimization” software and network-driver issues. Persistent drops can also involve ISP-side changes or route congestion.
Windows network options are tests, not universal fixes
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. On Windows, OBS lists Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing as options some users report can help. Keep Bind to IP at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it. OBS also suggests testing IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, restore the IPv4 and IPv6 defaults. These options do not address every network bottleneck.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce the bitrate during congestion and may limit network frame drops, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce stream quality. Treat it as a fallback if you cannot resolve the instability, not a substitute for a stable upload path.

Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
Free up GPU capacity
OBS composites scenes on the GPU, so a game or another graphics-heavy application can leave insufficient capacity for OBS. On Windows, OBS recommends trying Run as administrator, which can let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS. If you are gaming, cap the game’s frame rate, enable V-Sync, reduce its graphics settings, or lower its resolution to reduce competition for GPU resources.
Reduce OBS’s output workload
- Lower the stream’s output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not stable.
- Simplify scenes and scene collections. Reduce expensive sources, browser-source count and dimensions, and filters. Use a static image source for an overlay that does not need motion or interaction.
- Lowering the canvas resolution changes the basis of your scene layout, so reserve that step for severe resource constraints.
Lowering bitrate primarily addresses a network constraint. Lowering frame rate or output resolution and reducing GPU or scene load address rendering and encoding pressure, though they can reduce visual quality. Change the setting that matches the OBS symptom.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream key
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; CBR bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. HDR streams use H.265/HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR. Codec availability and platform guidance can change, so confirm the current recommendations on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
In OBS, verify that the stream is using the intended YouTube stream key and server, and that the selected codec and output settings match YouTube’s supported configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube automatically detects stream resolution and frame rate by default and transcodes live streams for viewers. Before a real broadcast, test with representative motion and audio, as YouTube advises.

When to change NVENC controls—and when not to
Do not start by switching NVENC presets or buying a GPU if the statistic rising is network Dropped Frames. First establish whether the issue is network, rendering, or encoding, then verify that the hardware and driver support your chosen encoder.
OBS’s hardware-encoding documentation describes NVENC support on Windows and Linux, including GeForce 750 Ti/Maxwell 900-series or newer support, and notes Turing-generation NVENC as recommended for best results. Support and driver requirements can change; consult OBS’s current hardware-encoding guidance and current NVIDIA compatibility information before making a hardware decision.
Advanced options in OBS’s guide for version 31.0 are version- and hardware-dependent, not first-line fixes for ordinary network drops. For example, its Ultra High Quality tuning is aimed at live-action details such as sensor noise, is not recommended for gaming content, and significantly reduces throughput. Split encode requires an Ada-generation GPU with at least two NVENC engines; forcing it may help throughput in some high-resolution cases but can create a visible seam at low bitrates. Check the guide for your OBS version, codec, and GPU before using specialized controls: OBS’s advanced NVENC options for OBS 31.0.

Troubleshooting: match the fix to the symptom
| Symptom | Likely branch | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped-frame counter rises while rendering and encoding remain steady | Network or bitrate | Lower bitrate; test wired networking; check router, cable, VPN/security interference, and alternate ingest endpoint |
| Rendering lag rises during a game | GPU/compositing load | Cap game frame rate, reduce graphics load, run OBS as administrator on Windows, simplify scenes |
| Encoding overload rises, but network drops do not | Encoding/output workload | Reduce resolution or frame rate, confirm encoder support, and retest with fewer demanding sources |
| Problem appears only on one service or ingest endpoint | Service-specific route or endpoint | Try another available endpoint and compare; a different-service test is diagnostic, not a guaranteed remedy |
| Changing bitrate helps network drops but quality falls | Connection capacity is the constraint | Keep a stable bitrate with headroom, or improve the network path; dynamic bitrate is only a fallback |
