To get a video file, you can download a Short you uploaded through YouTube Studio or, on Android, the YouTube app. For another creator’s Short, YouTube’s supported option is an eligible offline download inside the YouTube app—not an MP4 saved to your gallery.

Download a Short you uploaded
On a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content.
- Find the Short, open its menu, and choose Download.
YouTube Help says the downloaded MP4 is 720p or 360p, depending on the video size. You may not be able to download a video if it was removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in the past 24 hours. YouTube lists a limit of five downloads per video per day. See YouTube Help’s creator download instructions and restrictions.

Watch someone else’s Short offline
YouTube’s creator-download workflow does not let you download another user’s video as a file. For offline playback, use the YouTube app’s download feature when the video and your location are eligible. YouTube Premium members can download eligible videos in supported locations; some mobile downloads are also available for certain videos in selected countries and regions. Check YouTube’s current offline-download guidance.
These downloads stay in the YouTube app rather than becoming a video file you can freely export or move to your gallery. The app may require you to reconnect periodically to check that the video remains available.

If you want someone else to see a Short, use YouTube’s Share control or send its link. YouTube’s Terms of Service restrict downloading or otherwise using content except as specifically permitted by the service, with prior written permission from YouTube and, where applicable, rights holders, or as permitted by law. Music alone does not mean every creator download is unavailable. YouTube distinguishes music added through Shorts creation tools and its audio library from songs added outside those tools, which may be subject to standard copyright claims. Its creator-download restriction specifically lists use of a preapproved audio track. YouTube Help explains music and copyright for Shorts.

When an SD card can help
An SD card is optional. On a phone or tablet that supports SD cards, YouTube documents using one as the destination for eligible offline downloads. A compatible microSD card may help if you want to store those in-app downloads on expandable storage. It is not needed to save your own Short with Save to device, and it does not turn an offline YouTube download into an exportable video file. See YouTube Help’s instructions for downloading to an SD card.
