If YouTube says your stream key is invalid, copy the current key from the active stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and paste it into your encoder’s separate Stream Key field. Keep the server URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field. If the current key still fails, reset it in Live Control Room, replace the old value in the encoder, and verify that the protocol and server URL match.
Fix an invalid YouTube stream key in this order
- Copy the active key again. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, select Stream, and copy the value under Stream key. Paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. YouTube recommends getting the key from Live Control Room when a third-party encoder reports a startup error. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- Check the fields are not swapped. In a standard RTMP or RTMPS setup, enter the server URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field and the key in its Stream Key field. Do not put the key in the URL field or replace the supplied server URL with an unrelated address. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Reset the key if it may be stale or exposed. In Live Control Room, reset the stream key, then immediately update the encoder with the new value. The reset action is available to a channel owner or manager, not an editor or viewer. Resetting invalidates the old credential, so update any other encoder configuration where that key was saved. - Update the encoder and retry. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Check that its own preview or output looks and sounds right, then start the stream again.
- If it still will not connect, check protocol and transport. Follow the RTMP/RTMPS or HLS configuration below rather than mixing settings from different protocols.
Confirm the encoder’s stream configuration
RTMP or RTMPS
Use the matching server URL shown in Live Control Room and enter the key separately in the Stream Key field. For RTMPS, make sure the encoder supports RTMPS and that you selected the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP address. If you see an SSL error or timeout, check the URL and protocol; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also identifies port 443 as a possible SSL troubleshooting step. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

HLS
HLS is a separate ingestion configuration, not a general fix for an invalid RTMP key. Select or create a key configured for HLS and use the HLS HTTPS ingestion URL. Depending on that configuration, the key may be included in the URL rather than entered in a separate key field. Do not combine HLS settings with RTMP or RTMPS settings. Use the error and encoder preview to narrow it down
- The error appears immediately after pasting a key: recopy the key from the active Live Control Room stream and check that it is in the correct field.
- The key was saved earlier or recently reset: replace the saved value with the current key. If several encoders are configured, update each one that should use the new key.
- The encoder preview works, but YouTube never receives the stream: investigate the outbound internet connection and server/protocol settings. YouTube recommends testing outbound internet when the encoder appears healthy but the stream does not reach YouTube.
- RTMPS times out or shows an SSL problem: confirm the RTMPS URL and encoder support for RTMPS; check the port 443 troubleshooting option where applicable.
- You do not have permission to reset the key: ask a channel owner or manager to reset it. Editors and viewers cannot perform that action.
Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a password: YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Do not publish it, send it in a public post, or show it in a screenshot. If someone else may have seen it, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it wherever the old value was configured.
