For YouTube Live, set the video encoder to produce a keyframe about every 2 seconds. In FFmpeg, -g is a GOP size measured in frames—not seconds—so a constant 30 fps output typically needs -g 60, while 60 fps typically needs -g 120. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The right setting still depends on your output frame rate and encoder, so verify what FFmpeg actually sends.
What YouTube’s keyframe warning means
A keyframe (also called an I-frame) can be decoded without relying on earlier frames. The keyframe interval is the time or number of frames between keyframes. YouTube’s Live guidance recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its troubleshooting page describes the warning as keyframes arriving too often or not often enough; it gives 60 frames at 30 fps as the two-second example. YouTube’s live encoder settings and live streaming error messages cover this guidance.
The warning does not by itself prove that -g is the only problem. The configured frame rate, the encoder’s interpretation of options, GOP behavior, and ingestion errors can all matter. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes.
Calculate the FFmpeg GOP size
For constant-frame-rate output, multiply the frame rate you are sending to YouTube by the desired interval in seconds. For the recommended two-second interval, use twice the output frame rate:

| Output frame rate | Two-second GOP target | Four-second maximum equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 24 fps | 48 frames | 96 frames |
| 30 fps | 60 frames | 120 frames |
| 60 fps | 120 frames | 240 frames |
The 30 fps conversion is explicitly given by YouTube; the other values follow the same frame-rate-times-seconds calculation. These are frame counts, not seconds. Use the actual output frame rate, which may differ from the source file’s frame rate.
Set the GOP in FFmpeg
Example: constant 30 fps output with libx264
This example assumes FFmpeg is using its libx264 video encoder and the output is constant 30 fps. It sets a two-second GOP target and includes a closed-GOP request:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -r 30 -c:v libx264 -g 60 -flags +cgop -c:a aac -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the ingest URL and key with the values for your YouTube stream. Do not publish or share the stream key. If you already use a different FFmpeg input, audio setup, encoder, or ingest address, retain those parts and adapt the video options rather than copying the whole command blindly. In this example, -r 30 specifies the output frame rate, -g 60 sets the GOP size in frames, and -flags +cgop requests closed-GOP behavior. Confirm that your chosen encoder supports the relevant options.
Example: constant 60 fps output
If the stream actually sent to YouTube is constant 60 fps, the two-second equivalent is 120 frames. For the same assumed libx264 encoder, change the output rate and GOP value accordingly:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -r 60 -c:v libx264 -g 120 -flags +cgop -c:a aac -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Do not use these values merely because the source file has that frame rate. They must match the output delivered to YouTube. Variable-frame-rate sources and other encoders may behave differently.
Check the options supported by your encoder
FFmpeg documents generic codec options such as -g, alongside encoder-specific controls. Check the help for the encoder actually in use, for example:
ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264
Use the corresponding encoder name if you are using another software or hardware encoder. FFmpeg’s codec documentation describes codec and encoder options; the FFmpeg command-line documentation explains timestamp-based keyframe forcing.

When to use timestamp-based keyframe forcing
FFmpeg also provides -force_key_frames, which can request keyframes at specified timestamps. For example, a two-second cadence can be requested with -force_key_frames "expr:gte(t,n_forced*2)". Place the option among the output options for the video stream and adapt it to your command. FFmpeg rounds requested timestamps to the encoder time base, so the actual keyframe placement may not land on an exact timestamp. Timestamp forcing is not a universal substitute for setting and checking GOP behavior; confirm how the selected encoder handles it.
Verify the stream and troubleshoot a persistent warning
If YouTube continues to report an incorrect frequency, work through the output path rather than repeatedly changing the number at random:
- Confirm the output frame rate. Check that the rate configured in FFmpeg is the rate being sent to YouTube. Recalculate the two-second frame count from that rate.
- Identify the active video encoder. Check your command and encoder help; a generic option may not be supported or mapped the same way by every encoder or build.
- Inspect the encoded output. Verify the stream’s frame rate and keyframe spacing instead of assuming that an accepted command-line option produced the intended result.
- Check GOP closure. YouTube says its live pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Confirm the selected encoder’s closed-GOP option and behavior.
- Consider ingest instability. YouTube notes that ingestion errors can affect GOP size. Investigate connection or ingest problems if the encoded output appears correct but the warning persists.
Hardware encoding, variable frame rates, codec time bases, and encoder-specific option mappings can change the result. The example commands are starting points under their stated assumptions, not a guarantee that one setting will resolve every stream.

Do not confuse live ingest with uploaded-file encoding
The warning discussed here concerns a live stream. YouTube’s live guidance sets a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. Its separate upload encoding recommendations include closed GOP and a GOP of half the frame rate, among other recommendations. Those file-upload recommendations are for a different workflow; do not substitute them for live settings without a reason. YouTube also notes that some upload features are available only to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, so not every listed upload recommendation should be treated as a universal requirement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home, and your computer, OBS, and home connection are not needed to keep the stream running. Your video streams as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
