YouTube Says Encoder Disconnected While FFmpeg Is Running: How to Fix It

A running FFmpeg process does not guarantee YouTube is receiving your stream. Use this evidence-led checklist to isolate key, protocol, encoder, and network problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is still receiving your live stream. Check the Live Control Room and FFmpeg’s current output first, then verify the stream key and RTMP or RTMPS destination. If FFmpeg’s local output looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving data, investigate the outbound network connection. The message alone does not identify one root cause.

1. Confirm what YouTube and FFmpeg are reporting

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check whether YouTube reports that it is receiving the stream and note any encoder warnings or errors. YouTube’s status reflects what reaches its ingest service, not whether a process is still running on your computer. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Inspect FFmpeg’s live output and error log. Look for write failures, a closed connection, a rejected key, or TLS/SSL errors. If FFmpeg was started in a terminal, review the messages there; if you log output to a file, inspect the latest entries. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes its supported protocols, but the right remedy depends on the actual error and command.

Compare the two reports: FFmpeg can remain alive locally even when YouTube is no longer receiving data. Without the FFmpeg command, error output, dashboard state, and network details, it is not possible to identify the cause from the alert alone.

2. Verify the YouTube destination and stream key

In the Live Control Room, confirm the server URL and stream key, then compare them with the values configured in FFmpeg. YouTube advises users encountering an encoder startup error to get the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Make sure you are checking the stream’s current configuration rather than relying on a key or destination copied from an older setup.

  • Check for a typo, stale value, or mismatch between the destination configured in FFmpeg and the one shown in YouTube.
  • Do not share your stream key in screenshots, logs, or support posts. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  • If FFmpeg reports a key or authentication rejection, resolve the destination and key mismatch before changing encoding settings.

YouTube’s instructions are in its live-stream troubleshooting guide.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

3. Match RTMP or RTMPS to the actual error

Check the protocol, server address, and port in the URL FFmpeg is using. Do not change a port or add a command-line option just because YouTube says the encoder is disconnected; first match the change to the error FFmpeg actually reports.

YouTube explains that RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL and notes that if the URL looks correct but an SSL error occurs, the port may be wrong. Confirm the exact RTMPS destination and port against YouTube’s current settings. A TLS/SSL error suggests checking that configuration; a different error may point elsewhere.

4. Check whether the encoder is healthy locally

If YouTube is not receiving the stream, establish whether FFmpeg is producing usable audio and video before treating the network as the cause. YouTube recommends using a current encoder version and checking the local stream’s picture and sound, encoder errors in the dashboard, and CPU load. When available, inspect a local recording as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If local video or audio is missing or corrupted, examine the input source and FFmpeg’s encoding output first.
  • If CPU load is high or FFmpeg reports encoding trouble, address that local processing problem before drawing conclusions about the connection.
  • If the local picture and sound are sound and FFmpeg shows no relevant encoder errors, continue to the outbound network checks.

YouTube also suggests trying another encoder when the local stream has no apparent problem. Compare whether YouTube receives a stable stream, whether local audio and video remain usable, CPU load, dropped frames or disconnections, and whether the same destination and key are accepted. A different encoder is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the original software is the cause.

5. Investigate the outbound connection

If FFmpeg’s local output appears healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, test the outbound internet connection. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and remote ingest server. A connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the bitrate; excessive dropped frames can lead to disconnection.

  • Check whether FFmpeg reports write problems or whether YouTube’s dashboard shows the stream stopping or losing data.
  • If practical, test with a wired Ethernet connection to isolate whether the local Wi-Fi link is contributing. A wired test cannot fix an ISP or YouTube ingest issue, so treat it as a diagnostic step, not a universal solution.
  • If connection testing reveals a problem, YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider. If the issue remains after the troubleshooting steps, report it to YouTube.

6. Common symptoms and what to check

What you see What to check next
FFmpeg is running, but Live Control Room says the encoder is disconnected Check FFmpeg’s latest output and error log, then verify whether YouTube is receiving data. The process being alive is not proof of delivery.
FFmpeg reports a rejected key or authentication problem Compare the configured stream key and server URL with the current values in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
FFmpeg reports a TLS/SSL error using RTMPS Confirm the RTMPS URL and port. YouTube notes that the port may be wrong when the URL appears correct but an SSL error occurs.
The local recording or preview has bad or missing audio/video Investigate the source, encoder output, current encoder version, and CPU load before blaming the outbound connection.
Local output looks sound, but frames drop or connections are intermittent Test outbound network stability and whether the connection can sustain the bitrate. A wired local test can help isolate Wi-Fi, but cannot resolve ISP or ingest-service problems.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than keep an FFmpeg process and home connection online, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
