YouTube Says Audio Is Missing From an FFmpeg Loop: How to Find and Fix It

A step-by-step diagnosis for YouTube audio warnings on FFmpeg loops, from source streams and mapping to ingest health messages.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If YouTube reports missing audio on an FFmpeg loop, first find out where the audio disappears: in the source, in FFmpeg’s selected output, in the local recording, or at YouTube’s ingest. Check the source’s audio streams and the command’s -map and -an options before changing codecs or buying hardware. The exact fix depends on your command, source streams, and YouTube’s health message.

Trace the audio from source to YouTube

Use the same source and output that produced the warning. YouTube recommends checking the source routed to the encoder and the local archive when a stream looks or sounds wrong. Its live-stream troubleshooting guidance also advises checking the encoder output and connection.

  1. Check the input. Inspect the exact file or other input used by FFmpeg and confirm it contains an audio stream. If the file has no audio, stream mapping and encoding cannot restore its original sound. If you have a local recording or archive, listen to it while the loop is running.
  2. Check FFmpeg’s output selection. Trace every input and output in the command, then determine which streams the output includes. A video-only mapping, or an option that disables audio, can leave the output without sound even when the input has it.
  3. Check the local encoded output. Listen to or inspect the output before treating YouTube’s warning as a codec problem. If audio is absent locally, focus on the source, stream selection, filters, and encoding. If it is present locally but YouTube flags the stream, check the ingest settings and exact health message.
  4. Check YouTube’s received stream. Preview it in Live Control Room and note the full warning shown beside the Health Indicator. Test with representative audio and movement before a public stream, as YouTube recommends.

Check input indices, mapping, and audio switches

Read the command from left to right. Each -i introduces an input, and stream labels in a mapping refer to an input index and a stream within that input. Make sure the output maps the intended audio stream from the intended input—not merely the video. FFmpeg documents that “When -map is used, only user-mapped streams are included in that output file, with one possible exception for filtergraph outputs described below.” See the FFmpeg documentation.

  • -map selecting only video will omit audio from that output. Add a mapping for the correct audio stream if one exists and is meant to be streamed.
  • Look for -an. For an output, it disables audio selection; as an input option, it prevents audio streams from being filtered or selected.
  • If a filtergraph is involved, check that its audio output is connected to the intended output. Filtergraph outputs are the exception described in FFmpeg’s mapping documentation.
  • Without explicit mapping, FFmpeg selects streams automatically. Do not assume the chosen audio is the one you intended when a file has multiple audio streams or there are multiple inputs.

Do not copy a supposedly universal “fixed” command: the right stream indices and mappings depend on the actual inputs and output. Identify them from your own command and source first.

Verify option placement, especially -stream_loop

FFmpeg options generally apply to the next specified input or output and reset between files. -stream_loop is an input option; -1 requests infinite looping. Check that it appears before the -i for the input it is intended to loop. A misplaced input option can affect a different file than expected, but looping itself is not evidence that audio has been removed. Confirm stream selection separately.

If local audio is present, check YouTube ingest settings

When the encoded output sounds right locally but YouTube reports an audio problem, use the exact Health Indicator message to narrow the issue. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs and recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. These are YouTube’s published settings, not proof that any one setting caused your warning. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

The Live Dashboard and Live Control Room show errors beside the Health Indicator. YouTube’s live-stream error messages and the LiveStream health issue reference describe issues including unsupported codecs, sample-rate or channel problems, bitrate warnings, and mismatches between primary and backup audio. Match the warning to the output actually being sent; do not change unrelated parameters at random.

Separate an audio-encoding fault from a connection fault

If the local output has sound and the encoder preview looks and sounds healthy, YouTube advises checking the outbound connection. If the encoder itself shows errors, or CPU load is high, investigate those before blaming network ingest. Compare primary and backup encoder audio settings if you use both: YouTube health issues can include mismatches between them.
