Use RTMPS for a YouTube Live stream when your encoder supports it. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection from your encoder to YouTube; YouTube recommends it. But RTMPS is a transport choice, not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime. A continuous prerecorded stream also depends on an encoder or cloud workflow that can keep sending video, suitable stream settings, and monitoring.
RTMPS vs. RTMP: what changes?

YouTube Help describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. Its recommendation is about securing the encoder-to-YouTube connection; it does not mean that RTMPS changes the video, improves its quality, or prevents every interruption.

Find and configure YouTube’s RTMPS URL
- Check the encoder. Look for a YouTube RTMPS preset. If one is available, select it; update the encoder if its documentation says an update is needed to add RTMPS support.
- Get the stream URL and key from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the Stream tab or schedule a stream, then open Stream settings using the lock icon. Copy the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter both in the encoder. Use the URL and key from Live Control Room. An encoder may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so verify that the selected server URL uses the secure RTMPS protocol rather than assuming the preset or default is secure.
- Start a test and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the video and audio before relying on the setup for a long-running broadcast.
If there is no RTMPS preset, use the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room if the encoder permits a custom server URL. Do not substitute a guessed address: the actual server URL is the one YouTube provides for the stream.

Video, audio, and network settings to validate
The protocol alone does not make a stream stable. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending; one bitrate is not appropriate for every format.

A specific bitrate example
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s settings guidance accessed on 2026-10-04 lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. These figures apply to that combination, not to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.
Check available upload capacity
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth above the combined bitrate of the stream and recommends 20% headroom. If the connection is shared with other uploads or devices, leave room for that traffic too. Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity can interrupt delivery even when the RTMPS URL and encoder settings are correct.

Make a prerecorded stream suitable for continuous operation
A 24/7 prerecorded stream is a continuous-delivery workflow, not simply a secure URL. The encoder or cloud service must keep sending the program, and someone should be able to detect problems and respond to them. Before leaving a stream unattended, test the actual video, audio, playlist behavior, and network under representative conditions.

- Use representative movement and audio in the test rather than a static or silent sample only.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor audio and video quality after starting.
- Start the encoder ahead of the time you need the stream to be available, leaving time to catch connection or configuration problems.
- If recording a local archive, check that its file is growing as expected.
- If a backup encoder is available, test failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
These are reliability practices, not a promise of uninterrupted service. YouTube’s encoder setup page names Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streaming; that listing does not independently establish any provider’s performance.

Archive expectations for streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The official guidance considered here does not settle the archive outcome for one uninterrupted stream that runs for 12 hours or longer, nor does it establish a complete rule for an uninterrupted 24/7 prerecorded stream. If you need a replay, do not rely on an archive for a longer continuous broadcast without checking YouTube’s current guidance. Keep a separate recording if you need an independent copy.
RTMPS connection errors: causes and fixes
SSL connection error
- Recheck the complete server URL copied from Live Control Room, including its protocol. YouTube’s guidance says the protocol and server must be correct.
- If the encoder offers a port setting and the SSL error remains, YouTube’s example uses port 443. Use it with the actual server URL from Live Control Room, not with a made-up address.
Connection timeout
- Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS; consult its documentation if the timeout continues.
- Check that the correct URL and stream key are in use, then verify that the network can provide upload capacity above the stream bitrate with headroom.
Stream connects but playback is unstable
- Check that the selected bitrate fits the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and that the encoder is using CBR and an appropriate keyframe interval.
- Compare the stream’s combined bitrate with available upload bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Review the Live Control Room preview and encoder status; a correct protocol does not rule out a bitrate, network, or source-media problem.
