A YouTube 403 is not automatically a bad stream key. First find out whether the rejection came from a YouTube Live API request or from the encoder’s RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection, and save the complete error detail. The right fix depends on where publishing stopped and what YouTube reported.
1. Identify which part returned 403
Before changing settings, record the exact error and the step that failed. A 403 from a YouTube Live API call is different from an encoder failing to connect to YouTube’s ingest server. The HTTP status alone does not identify the cause.

- Encoder or RTMP/RTMPS log: The failure happens while the encoder is connecting or publishing.
- YouTube Live API response: Save the response body, including its error reason and message, and note the API method being called.
- YouTube Studio: Note any warning shown in Live Control Room and whether the encoder appears connected.
For any path, write down the timestamp, whether publishing worked before, and whether the error occurs before or after the encoder establishes a connection. For an error starting third-party encoder software, YouTube’s documented first step is to retrieve the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. This can resolve a stale or incorrect key, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every 403.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy the intended stream key. YouTube advises treating it like a password: do not share or publish it.
- In your encoder’s YouTube destination settings, paste that key and verify the stream URL as well. They are separate inputs: the URL identifies the ingest destination, while the key identifies the stream YouTube should accept.
- Save the configuration and try publishing again. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new value.
YouTube’s guidance for a third-party encoder startup error is: “To fix it, get a new stream key in the Live Control Room and update your encoder.” Read Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream and Manage live stream settings for the relevant Studio settings.
3. If a YouTube Live API call returned 403: inspect the error reason
Do not assume that changing an encoder key will repair an API authorization or resource-state error. Match the response detail to the operation your software was attempting, then check the corresponding condition.

Channel eligibility or permission
The API error catalog includes liveStreamingNotEnabled and livePermissionBlocked. Review the channel’s live-streaming access and permissions in YouTube Studio. If the channel is not eligible to stream or access is blocked, encoder settings alone will not resolve the API error.
Broadcast or stream lifecycle state
If your workflow creates, binds, updates, or transitions broadcasts and streams, check whether the resource is in a state that permits that operation. The API catalog includes inactive-stream and invalid or redundant transition errors. Confirm that the broadcast and stream are the intended resources and that your workflow is not repeating a transition that has already occurred.

Concurrency and request-rate restrictions
The API reference also documents errors related to concurrent broadcasts and request-rate limits. Check whether another broadcast is active and whether an automated client is retrying too frequently. Follow the error detail rather than treating every 403 as a key problem.
Restricted stream-property changes
Some stream properties cannot be changed after creation. If the API rejects an update to a restricted CDN setting, the documented remedy is to create a new stream with the correct settings rather than attempting to modify the existing stream. 4. If the log points to RTMPS connection setup: verify transport
Use this branch only when the encoder log or connection details implicate ingest setup. A transport misconfiguration can prevent a connection, but the title alone does not establish that it caused the 403.

- For RTMPS, use the
rtmpsprotocol and port443. - Confirm the connection uses SSL/TLS and that the server hostname is sent in the SNI handshake.
- Check that the encoder has not accidentally substituted an RTMP URL, altered the path, or used a hostname inconsistent with the endpoint.
Compare the full configured URL with YouTube’s RTMPS delivery requirements. If you cannot tell whether the failure is at connection setup or API authorization, preserve the full log and response instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

5. After publishing connects: check stream health and media settings
Once YouTube accepts the publishing connection, investigate audio, video, and stream health separately from the earlier 403. YouTube recommends keeping encoder software current, testing audio and motion, and monitoring the stream health display in Live Control Room.
- Use a supported encoder format and settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Check the encoder and YouTube stream-health warnings for specific media problems before changing bitrate, resolution, or codec.

6. Does streaming 24/7 itself cause a 403?
The cited YouTube error references do not identify a 24/7 duration by itself as a singular 403 cause. However, a continuous-stream setup may use software that repeatedly creates, updates, binds, or transitions API resources; lifecycle, concurrency, and request-rate restrictions can apply to those operations. Diagnose the specific rejected operation and error detail rather than attributing the failure to stream duration alone.
