Use the current Stream URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room as your encoder’s primary server address, and enter the matching stream key in the encoder’s key field. Prefer the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube’s clearest instructions for copying a separate Backup server URL apply to HLS ingestion; a second URL by itself does not configure or prove automatic encoder failover.
Which URL goes in the encoder?
For a standard RTMP or RTMPS encoder, open the current stream in YouTube Live Control Room and copy its Stream URL into the encoder’s server field. Copy that stream’s associated stream key into the separate key field. If the encoder offers a YouTube preset, you can use it instead, then confirm the selected stream and key are the intended ones. Scheduled streams use the same general connection steps.

- Use the URL displayed for the stream you are setting up, not a URL copied from an unrelated stream.
- Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the stream.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported by your encoder. Check that the address starts with the secure RTMPS scheme rather than assuming an ordinary RTMP URL is equivalent.
YouTube’s guidance is to copy the Stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
When should you use a Backup server URL?
Do not treat every second ingest address as a universal backup destination. YouTube’s explicit steps to copy both a primary Stream URL and a Backup server URL are for HLS ingestion. Select or create a stream key configured for HLS, copy the resulting HTTPS Stream URL into the encoder, and—if you need backup ingestion—copy the displayed Backup server URL as well. With HLS, the key is embedded in the URL, so it is not entered separately.

These HLS-specific instructions should not be applied blindly to an RTMP/RTMPS encoder. Check that the encoder supports HLS and the backup-ingestion workflow you intend to use; do not assume it can send to two destinations simultaneously just because YouTube displays a second URL. RTMP(S) and HLS are not interchangeable settings
RTMP(S) sends a continuous stream; HLS sends segmented media and generally has higher latency. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second TS segments and additional encoder settings. Choose the protocol supported by both your encoder workflow and the YouTube stream configuration, rather than pasting an HLS address into an RTMP-only setup.

How to reveal and use the RTMPS URL
- Open the current or scheduled stream in YouTube Live Control Room and select the Stream tab.
- In Stream settings, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL.
- Copy that URL into the encoder’s server field and the matching stream key into its key field, unless the encoder’s YouTube preset handles those fields for you.
- Confirm the encoder is configured for RTMPS, then start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and check preview and stream health before the event.
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and recommends it. If the encoder reports SSL or timeout errors, YouTube advises checking that the protocol and server use RTMPS; port 443 may be needed where the encoder allows port configuration. A backup ingest URL and a backup encoder are related resilience measures, but the URL alone does not configure failover. The encoder or streaming workflow must be set up to send a backup feed as intended. YouTube’s failover guidance recommends stopping the primary encoder—or disconnecting its Ethernet cable—and checking that playback rolls over to the backup encoder.

- Configure the primary and backup encoders or feeds according to the protocol and workflow your encoder supports.
- Test before the event: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network connection, then verify that the player switches to the backup feed.
- Check YouTube preview and stream health, and confirm audio, video, and viewer playback remain acceptable through the transition.
Plan upload capacity for the combined feeds: YouTube recommends allowing primary bitrate + backup bitrate + 20% upload headroom. This is a planning recommendation, not a measurement of your connection. Run a realistic test on the network you will use for the event. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
Encoder settings that affect compatibility
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and sets 4 seconds as the maximum for the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings. These values help diagnose compatibility; they do not change which stream-specific URL to copy.

- Protocol: use RTMPS when the encoder supports it; use HLS only when the stream and encoder are configured for HLS.
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds where configurable; do not exceed YouTube’s stated 4-second maximum for the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
- Rate control and media: use CBR and a listed video codec and audio codec supported by the encoder.
- HDR or unsupported RTMP(S) capabilities: YouTube identifies HLS as an option for HDR or capabilities not supported by RTMP(S); follow the HLS-specific setup rather than reusing RTMP field assumptions.
Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips for the current recommendations.
Troubleshoot the usual connection and failover problems
- The encoder will not connect: confirm you copied the current stream’s URL and matching key, and that the selected protocol matches the URL. For RTMPS SSL or timeout issues, verify RTMPS is selected and check whether port 443 is required by your encoder or network.
- The stream connects but the backup does not take over: a displayed Backup server URL is not proof that failover is configured. Confirm the encoder supports the workflow and run the primary-stop or Ethernet-disconnect test before the event.
- The backup feed is unstable or drops: check available upload bandwidth against the combined primary and backup bitrates plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; test on the actual event connection.
- HLS setup asks for a separate key: YouTube’s HLS instructions say the key is embedded in the HLS URL. Confirm you selected an HLS-configured key and copied the complete URL.
- HLS playback has more delay: HLS uses segments and has higher latency than RTMP; confirm that its latency trade-off suits the event.
- Video or audio is rejected or unhealthy: check the codec, CBR, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, then inspect stream health and preview.
