If your encoder on a Linux VPS reports “connection refused” when you try to go live on YouTube, first identify the exact destination and connection stage. A direct encoder-to-YouTube setup has one network leg; a VPS-hosted RTMP relay has two. For YouTube delivery, copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and verify the protocol, hostname, application path, port 443, TLS, and SNI before changing encoder quality settings. A refusal, a timeout, a TLS error, and dropped frames point to different checks.
Start by identifying which connection is failing
Find the server or URL configured in OBS, FFmpeg, or another encoder. Is it YouTube’s ingest server, or an RTMP service running on your VPS? If you use a relay, trace both legs separately: encoder to relay, then relay to YouTube. NGINX’s RTMP module can provide RTMP, HLS, and DASH streaming, so a VPS running it may be acting as an intermediate service rather than YouTube’s destination. NGINX RTMP module overview.

- Direct delivery: the encoder on the VPS connects to YouTube. Check the YouTube ingest configuration and the VPS’s outbound network path.
- Relay delivery: the encoder connects to your relay, which separately publishes to YouTube. Check the encoder-to-relay connection first, then inspect the relay’s YouTube destination and outbound path.
A refusal tells you that a connection attempt was rejected at the configured destination or by an intermediate service. On its own, it does not establish that YouTube is down, that the stream key is invalid, or that a firewall is blocking a particular port.
Use YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; explicitly select the secure RTMPS URL. Copy the stream key from the same stream settings, and keep it private. See YouTube’s RTMPS delivery guide.
- Check the URL as a complete set of fields. Confirm that the protocol is
rtmps, that the hostname and application path match the current URL provided in Live Control Room, and that the port is443. Do not substitute a remembered hostname or the default port used by a self-hosted RTMP server. - Make sure the encoder is actually using RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP carried through TLS. A plain TCP connection to a plausible-looking host and port is not an RTMPS connection if the client does not negotiate TLS.
- Preserve the server hostname for SNI. YouTube’s RTMPS setup requires the hostname for server authentication using Server Name Indication (SNI). A connection to an IP address or a client configuration that omits the hostname may fail TLS authentication even when the port is reachable.
- Re-enter the key carefully. Ensure the encoder has the stream key associated with the selected stream settings. Avoid exposing it in screenshots, public logs, or shared configuration. A key mismatch is worth checking, but it does not by itself explain a TCP connection refusal.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live delivery. Its guidance identifies an incorrect URL or missing RTMPS support as possible causes of encoder connection problems; use the current endpoint rather than assuming an old URL is still appropriate. Test the VPS network path and firewall policy
After confirming the endpoint, test connectivity from the VPS itself to the configured host and port. Use an appropriate TCP and, for RTMPS, TLS diagnostic available on your Linux distribution. Check what stage it reaches: TCP connection, TLS negotiation, or neither. A successful TCP check alone does not prove the RTMPS configuration is valid.
- Inspect the Linux host firewall’s outbound rules for the destination and port you actually need.
- Check the VPS provider’s network firewall, security controls, or egress policy for the same outbound flow.
- If using a relay, perform these checks from the machine that originates each connection: the encoder host for encoder-to-relay, and the relay host for relay-to-YouTube.
- Permit only the required outbound flow. Do not open inbound ports on the VPS as a reflexive response to an outbound connection failure.
The available guidance does not establish that any particular VPS provider blocks YouTube. Confirm a restriction in your own host or provider configuration before treating it as the cause.

Match the symptom to the failing stage
| What you see | Likely stage to inspect | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
| Connection refused before streaming starts | TCP connection to the configured destination, or an intermediate service rejecting it | Verify the destination and port; determine whether the encoder is connecting directly to YouTube or to a relay; inspect relevant host and provider egress rules. |
| Connection times out or the encoder says it failed to connect | Reachability or connection setup | Recheck the current URL, port, protocol, and network path. YouTube uses “failed to connect to server” in guidance for an encoder connection timeout; do not treat it as identical to a refusal. |
| TLS or certificate error | TLS handshake or server authentication | Confirm RTMPS, the current hostname and port 443, and that the hostname is available for SNI. Check that the client is negotiating TLS rather than making a plain RTMP connection. |
| Encoder connects, then drops frames or disconnects intermittently | Stream stability after connection | Investigate network stability and whether the bitrate is sustainable. OBS notes that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the encoder and remote ingest server; that advice is most applicable after a connection has been established. OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting. |
If the connection works, check stream settings and health
Encoder quality settings matter for a stable, compatible stream, but they are not the first explanation for a TCP connection refusal. Once the encoder reaches YouTube, use YouTube’s recommended settings and monitor the stream health indicators in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Test with representative audio and motion rather than judging stream health from a static image. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing bitrate to fix a refused connection: bitrate is relevant to stream stability after connection, not the first check for a rejected TCP connection. Verify the endpoint and connection stage first.
- Assuming every error mentioning RTMP means the same thing: refusal, timeout, TLS failure, and dropped frames occur at different stages. Use the encoder’s exact message and logs to guide the next check.
- Using the ordinary RTMP URL while expecting RTMPS: choose the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and confirm the encoder’s protocol setting matches it.
- Troubleshooting only the encoder when a relay is involved: a relay adds another independent connection. Establish whether the failing leg is encoder-to-relay or relay-to-YouTube.
- Changing firewall rules without locating the blocked leg: first identify the source host, destination, and port for the failing connection. The available documentation does not show that a particular port or provider is blocked in your case.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than diagnose and maintain a VPS encoder, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
