There is no sourced, controlled head-to-head test or comparative failure-rate data. Reliability depends on the whole delivery chain: the computer and encoder, correct settings, the upload connection to YouTube, and how quickly someone notices and responds to problems.
Choose OBS if you want a graphical workflow and visible diagnostics; choose FFmpeg if you want a scriptable command-line pipeline and can manage its configuration and process supervision. Those are practical workflow differences, not proof that either tool has higher uptime.

What reliability means for a YouTube podcast stream
A stream can fail or degrade at several points: the host computer may lack capacity, the encoder may be misconfigured, the upload connection may fluctuate, or YouTube ingest may report a problem. The two encoders offer different ways to operate and observe a stream, but YouTube’s guidance focuses on compatible settings, testing, and monitoring—not on a reliability ranking between OBS and FFmpeg.
For either option, use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the baseline, test the actual show format before relying on it, and monitor both the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room while live. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance is the primary reference for ingest settings and testing.

OBS and FFmpeg compared on practical reliability factors
| Factor | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Operating style | Graphical workflow; useful when an operator wants to configure and observe the stream through an interface. | Command-line driven and scriptable; useful when the operator can manage command configuration and process supervision. |
| What you can monitor | OBS displays connection status and dropped-frame information. YouTube Live Control Room provides stream health and messages as well. | YouTube Live Control Room provides stream health and messages. The reviewed documentation does not establish an equivalent OBS-style indicator comparison. |
| Evidence of comparative uptime | Not established. | Not established. |
| Recovery assumptions | Do not infer recovery guarantees from the interface or a connection indicator; monitor the live output. | Do not treat FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect options as proof of RTMP publishing recovery to YouTube. Confirm that any retry behavior applies to the output protocol, installed version, and complete process. |
OBS says rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; it does not by itself show that OBS is defective. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. Its guidance describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network issues between the computer and remote ingest server. See the OBS Help Portal and OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Use settings aligned with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its documented encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. For RTMPS-specific information, see Google’s YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide.

| H.264 video setting | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| Stereo audio | — | 128 kbps; 44.1 kHz sample rate |
These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026—not measured reliability results and not a guarantee that a connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube advises matching settings to the available connection and checking upload bitrate. Its LiveStreams API documentation describes the platform’s live-stream resource; it is not a comparative test of desktop encoders.

- Set up the intended production. Use the same visuals or camera, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval planned for the real stream. Confirm the output protocol and stream key are configured for YouTube.
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test and choose a bitrate the connection can sustain with headroom. A nominal speed result does not guarantee stable delivery throughout a show.
- Run a representative trial. Include typical speaking, music or other permitted audio, and the expected visual movement. Keep the trial long enough to observe the conditions likely to affect the actual event.
- Watch both sets of indicators. Check OBS connection status and dropped frames, if using OBS, and YouTube Live Control Room stream health and messages. For FFmpeg, monitor the process and output logs as well as YouTube’s health information.
- Identify the layer reporting trouble. A rising OBS dropped-frame count with a yellow or red connection indicator points to a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; investigate the network path before blaming the encoder. Use YouTube’s messages and the encoder’s own status to narrow other issues.
YouTube’s direct advice is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Follow its encoder guidance for current settings and its recommendation to monitor stream health during the event.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Choosing between them
Choose OBS when the visible workflow matters
OBS is a sensible choice when you prefer a graphical setup and want its connection and dropped-frame indicators readily available. If the stream degrades, interpret those indicators as evidence about the connection and configured bitrate, not as automatic proof of an OBS fault.
Choose FFmpeg when scripting and supervision suit your operation
FFmpeg fits a command-line pipeline that can be configured and supervised reliably by its operator. Its protocol documentation includes RTMPS and HTTP reconnect options, but the documented HTTP options do not establish that RTMP output to YouTube will recover automatically. Check the relevant FFmpeg protocol documentation for the installed version and the protocol actually used.

Common reliability problems and what to check
- Dropped frames in OBS: If the count rises and the indicator turns yellow or red, check whether the upload connection is unstable or the configured bitrate is too high for it. Test the network path and reduce bitrate if needed.
- Intermittent disconnections: Investigate the connection between the computer and YouTube’s ingest server, then run another representative test. OBS identifies intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as network-related symptoms.
- YouTube reports unhealthy stream status: Check stream health messages and compare the active output settings with YouTube’s supported protocol, codec, bitrate, and keyframe guidance.
- FFmpeg does not resume after a disconnect: Do not assume an HTTP reconnect flag applies to RTMP publishing. Verify the output protocol, FFmpeg version, and process supervision strategy; the documented HTTP options alone do not promise YouTube RTMP recovery.
- Problems appear only during the full show: Repeat a test using the expected show duration and representative audio and visuals. A short test under different conditions cannot establish how the complete setup will behave.
