If your YouTube playlist privacy setting won’t save, change it while signed in to the account that owns the playlist: in YouTube Studio, go to Content > Playlists > Details, choose a setting under Visibility, and click Save. Reopen the details to check which option is selected. If the setting still does not persist, check the account and playlist limitations below; YouTube’s current Help guidance does not identify a universal cause or a general update delay.
Change the playlist’s visibility in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio with the account that owns the playlist.
- Select Content in the left menu, then open Playlists.
- Find the playlist and select Details.
- Under Visibility, choose Public, Private, or Unlisted.
- Click Save.
If the page still looks unchanged, reopen the playlist details and inspect the selected Visibility option. This is a practical way to confirm the saved selection, not a formal troubleshooting procedure specified by YouTube.

Change privacy from the regular YouTube interface
On a computer
Open the You tab, select Playlists, and open the full playlist. Select its privacy option beneath the title, choose the desired setting, and save the change. Labels and placement may differ between interface versions.

On Android
Tap your profile picture, open Playlists, then View all. Select the playlist, tap Edit, choose its privacy setting, and tap Save. The exact route can vary by app version.

Check what the selected privacy setting allows
A playlist can appear unchanged if you expect a different kind of access or discovery than its selected setting provides. YouTube’s documented differences are:

For example, an unlisted playlist is meant to be reached through its link, not found through normal search. A public playlist can be accessible by link even if it is not immediately appearing where you expected.

Check account and setting limitations
Make sure you own the playlist
YouTube says playlist owners can change a playlist’s privacy. Confirm that the signed-in account is its owner; being able to view a playlist does not establish that you can edit its visibility.
Check whether the account is supervised
YouTube warns that the playlist privacy feature may not be available for supervised accounts. If the visibility control is missing, this is a documented limitation to check.

Separate playlist visibility from channel privacy
A channel’s Privacy controls for saved playlists and activity are different from changing the visibility of a playlist you own. If your concern is that saved playlists or likes appear on your channel, review the channel’s Privacy settings instead of editing the playlist’s Visibility.
Distinguish editing from creating a public playlist
YouTube limits how many public playlists a channel can create per day across YouTube, YouTube Music, and the YouTube API; advanced-feature access can increase that limit. This is a limit on creating public playlists. YouTube does not say that it prevents changing the privacy of an existing playlist.

Consider the legacy unlisted-playlist exception
YouTube says it made unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 private beginning July 23, 2021, unless the creator opted out. It also notes that some older unlisted playlists were created in the old system. This historical change can explain an unexpected state for legacy content, but it is not a general explanation for a current privacy setting that will not save.

- Check whether you are changing the playlist itself or trying to hide saved playlists or activity on your channel.
- Confirm you are signed in to the playlist owner’s account.
- Change the setting in YouTube Studio using Content > Playlists > Details > Visibility, then select Save.
- Reopen Details and inspect the selected setting.
- If the control is unavailable, check whether the account is supervised. If you are creating a new public playlist rather than editing an existing one, consider YouTube’s daily creation limit.
- Interpret the result using the visibility differences above: public can be discoverable, unlisted requires a link, and private restricts access.
If the selected option still does not persist, YouTube’s current Help material does not identify a universal cause or state how long an update should take. It also does not establish that waiting, clearing a cache, switching browsers, or changing devices will fix this specific problem. Consult YouTube’s current Help or Creator support channels, and note what happens after you click Save.
