YouTube’s pause ads are a display-style advertising format described for connected TVs and living-room viewing. When one appears, the video recedes on screen while an ad is shown alongside it; YouTube has not said that every pause, TV, country, or account will see one.
What are YouTube pause ads?
Pause ads are ads associated with the moment a viewer pauses a video, rather than ads that necessarily interrupt playback. In May 2025, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan described the living-room layout as a “squeezeback”: the paused video recedes and an ad appears on the TV screen. His remarks were made at the MoffettNathanson Media, Internet, and Communications Conference.

That description is specific to the television viewing experience. It does not establish that pause ads appear on phones or computers, or that every pause on a connected TV triggers one.

Why am I seeing an ad when I pause YouTube?
YouTube and its parent company Alphabet have framed the format as a way to create advertising opportunities on connected TVs without placing an ad directly into active playback. On Alphabet’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler described a connected-TV pilot as a “new non-interruptive ad format” that appears when users pause organic content. “Non-interruptive” is the company’s characterization of the format, not an independent finding about how viewers experience it. YouTube’s broader push reflects the growing importance of television screens to its service. A 2023 Google post, citing internal data, said that in 2021 people watched more than 700 million hours of YouTube daily on TV screens. The post also reported that 65% of YouTube’s U.S. connected-TV watch time in December 2022 was on content at least 21 minutes long. These are historical figures, not current audience measurements. The same post reported that 79% of 312 U.S. adults surveyed by Google and Qualtrics in 2022 preferred video ads grouped together rather than distributed throughout long-form TV content. That survey concerned ad breaks generally; it did not test whether people like pause ads. See Google’s account of its streaming-experience research.
Is YouTube showing pause ads to everyone?
No universal rollout is established by YouTube’s public statements. Alphabet described a connected-TV pilot in April 2024, and Mohan discussed the living-room format in May 2025. YouTube’s January 2025 post grouped pause ads with formats designed for the big screen, but did not announce availability for all viewers. These sources do not provide a current device-by-device, country-by-country, or account-by-account eligibility list.

As a result, seeing the format on one TV does not show that it is available on every TV or account. The published descriptions also do not establish whether every pause can produce an ad.

YouTube’s cited public descriptions do not specify a setting for disabling pause ads, nor do they explain whether availability depends on a particular account type. They also do not settle whether YouTube Premium subscribers see this format. If an ad appears, the available information does not establish a specific control for dismissing or disabling it; consult YouTube’s current app controls and account settings rather than assuming that a particular setting exists.
