Several features were announced for a staged rollout, so availability can differ by account, country, device and app version.
What YouTube announced
YouTube’s anniversary package brings together social listening, artist-to-fan communication and live-event discovery. The company also says YouTube Music has more than 300 million tracks, including official recordings, remixes, live performances and covers; that is a YouTube-reported figure, not an independently audited comparison with rival catalogs. The announcement is documented in YouTube’s August 21, 2025 announcement.

Taste Match turns listening into shared discovery
Taste Match is not described as a conventional collaborative queue. YouTube says it combines the listening tastes of people who join and automatically updates the playlist daily. That makes it useful for finding songs through another person’s profile without requiring everyone to curate every track manually.
The announcement does not establish account limits, a complete invite flow, whether profiles are private by default, or feature parity across iOS, Android and the web. Treat it as a taste-based discovery playlist, not a guaranteed real-time group session. If it is missing, update the app and check whether the feature has reached your account.

Comments bring community discussion to albums and playlists
YouTube said comments on albums and playlists would arrive soon. If broadly deployed, this would move YouTube Music beyond one-way playback by giving listeners a place to discuss a release or collection alongside it.
At announcement time, YouTube had not specified global availability, moderation rules, or whether comments would cover user-created playlists, official playlists, albums, or every category. It is therefore best labeled announced or rolling out rather than universally available.
Concert discovery is powered by Bandsintown
YouTube announced an exclusive Bandsintown partnership to surface upcoming concerts in more places, including artist pages and Official Artist Channels, music videos and Shorts. The practical goal is to connect a song or video with a nearby live event.

Discovery is not ticket sales
The integration primarily displays event information and can send a fan to a third-party event or ticket page. It does not mean YouTube is the ticket seller. Listings can be incomplete because coverage depends on Bandsintown data, artist-page configuration, location, country and whether an event has been correctly matched to the artist.

YouTube is expanding artist-following notifications for upcoming releases, new merchandise and newly announced event dates. To receive alerts, follow the artist where appropriate, enable YouTube Music notifications and allow notifications at the phone’s operating-system level.
- Open YouTube Music and tap your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Turn the available notification categories on or off.
Labels can vary by platform and app version. A missing alert does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable: the artist may not have connected the relevant data, the event may not be covered in your market, or notifications may be blocked by the operating system.

What the new fan badges mean
First to Watch
This badge recognizes fans who watched an official music video particularly early. “Early” is relative to that specific release and its audience; YouTube does not promise one universal cutoff for every video.
Top Listener
Top Listener reflects unusually high engagement with an artist compared with other listeners. It is inherently relative, so ordinary listening does not guarantee it.
Badges are recognition features, not rewards. YouTube’s announcement does not promise ticket priority, exclusive content, money, monetization or special artist access. It also does not establish a universal badge history, public-profile display rule or external sharing method. A listener could qualify for both badges if the account meets each feature’s separate criteria, but YouTube does not publish a blanket eligibility rule.

View milestones are prompts, not certifications
YouTube may highlight official videos approaching major view counts such as 100,000, 1 million and 1 billion, encouraging fans to help reach the next milestone. These prompts are engagement messaging, not a new chart, royalty calculation or industry certification. They should not be treated as equivalent to RIAA, Billboard, BRIT Awards or another outside measurement system.
Is this a playback upgrade?
Mostly, no. The anniversary announcement is centered on community, fandom, artist relationships and live-event discovery rather than a new audio codec, major player redesign, new subscription tier or independently verified catalog expansion. YouTube Music’s existing differentiation remains its mix of conventional streaming with official videos, albums, remixes, covers, live recordings, concert footage and other YouTube-native material. Free users can listen with advertising. YouTube Music Premium adds ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback and downloads for offline listening, as described in YouTube’s feature comparison. Podcast advertising can still appear for Premium members, and creator-embedded promotions may remain.

These anniversary features are not assigned a universal Premium requirement in the announcement. Existing Premium subscribers receive the playback benefits, but a subscription should not be justified solely by features that may still be rolling out.
Ask Music is related, but separate
Ask Music shows YouTube Music’s parallel move toward natural-language discovery; it was not presented as one of the core 10th-anniversary features. On supported mobile accounts, users can describe a mood, activity or genre and receive a personalized mix.
- Open YouTube Music.
- On Home, find What are you in the mood for?
- Tap Ask any way you like.
- Type or speak a request and play the generated mix.
According to the official Ask Music help page, the feature requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, is mobile-only, supports English or Spanish app languages, and is currently listed for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico and Latin American countries excluding Brazil. Quality and accuracy can vary, and prompts or results may be blocked by safeguards.
Moving from another streaming service
YouTube Music includes an in-app playlist transfer flow. It imports playlists, albums, artists and tracks, but it is not a permanent two-way sync.
- Open YouTube Music and tap your profile icon.
- Choose Settings, then Privacy & data.
- Tap Transfer playlists from other apps.
- Tap Let’s start, authorize the external service and select playlists.
- Tap Transfer to YouTube Music.
The original playlists remain on the old service, later edits do not synchronize, some tracks may not match and podcasts cannot be imported or exported through this process. YouTube lists TuneMyMusic and Soundiiz as third-party options but does not guarantee them. Details and limitations are in YouTube’s transfer guidance.
Who benefits most?
- Artist followers: Release, merchandise and event alerts can reduce the chance of missing news.
- Concertgoers: Bandsintown listings connect videos and artist pages with live-event discovery, subject to local coverage.
- Video and live-performance fans: YouTube’s mix of official videos, covers, remixes and recordings remains a core advantage.
- Social listeners: Taste Match and forthcoming comments add community context to discovery.
- Audio-only power users: The anniversary package changes less; advanced playlist control and consistent cross-platform behavior may matter more.
Bottom line
YouTube Music’s 10th-anniversary update strengthens its identity as a video-and-fandom platform. Taste Match, concert discovery, artist alerts and badges are meaningful for listeners who follow artists and participate in fan culture, but they do not replace a polished audio-only workflow. Because the August 21, 2025 announcement mixes launched, rolling-out and forthcoming features, check your country, device, account and notification settings before assuming every item is available. The update is a good reason to revisit YouTube Music; it is not, by itself, proof that every listener needs a new subscription.
